An easy call for Shildt after Wainwright collected 17 wins with a 3.05 ERA, 1.06 WHIP, and 174/50 K/BB ratio over 206 1/3 innings (32 starts) during the 2021 regular season. The 40-year-old right-hander will now try to push the hard-charging Cardinals through to the best-of-five NLDS. His likely opponent in the one-game Wild Card round is Max Scherzer and the Dodgers.

Dodgers skipper Dave Roberts confirmed Friday that Max Scherzer would start the Wild Card game for the Dodgers, if that is indeed their fate. The Dodgers enter play on Friday two games behind the Giants in the National League West. While they have yet to give up hope on capturing the division, the most likely scenario has them matching up against Adam Wainwright and the Cardinals in the Wild Card game. Given how good the 37-year-old hurler has been this season -- and since joining the Dodgers -- it's difficult to argue giving him the ball instead of Walker Buehler.
