Back-to-back homers propel Cards
Yadier Molina and Paul DeJong hit back-to-back solo home runs in the top of the ninth inning Saturday afternoon to send St. Louis to a 9-8 win at Chicago. Molina ended the contest 2-for-5 with the solo homer and two runs scored. DeJong went 2-for-4 with the solo home run and a walk. Marcell Ozuna finished 1-for-4 with a homer, a walk and two RBIs. John Gant retired the only batter he faced in relief to notch the win. Carlos Martinez picked up the save as he allowed no hits with two strikeouts and one walk in a scoreless frame. Miles Mikolas gets the start this afternoon for the Cardinals as he enters with a 9-14 record, 4.29 ERA and 1.22 WHIP plus 140 strikeouts over 176 2/3 innings pitched.
Kimbrel blows save
Craig Kimbrel allowed back-to-back solo home runs in the top of the ninth inning Saturday afternoon as Chicago fell 9-8 to St. Louis. Kimbrel gave up two earned runs on two hits with two strikeouts and one walk over one inning to take the loss. Nico Hoerner helped lead the Cubs offensively as he went 1-for-4 with a solo home run and two runs scored. Tony Kemp and Ian Happ were each 1-for-1 with a pinch-hit two-run homer. Yu Darvish draws the start tonight as he comes in with a 6-7 record, 4.02 ERA and 1.11 WHIP plus 217 strikeouts over 170 1/3 innings of work.
MLB Betting Trends
St. Louis
The Cardinals are 5-1 in the last six Mikolas road starts. St. Louis is 4-0 in its last four road games.
Chicago
The Cubs are 4-1 in the last five Darvish home starts. Chicago is 0-6 in its last six games versus a team with a winning record.
Prediction:
The wind is blowing out again at Wrigley, but I think Darvish still turns in a respectable start. He's been in great form the last several months aside from a couple hiccups and his strikeout rate lately has been phenomenal. Mikolas is a groundball pitcher, but he's still given up 26 home runs this season and I'm going to predict he gives up multiple homers today and doesn't make it through the fifth inning. Darvish might give up a long ball or two as well, but I see him pitching deeper and putting the Cubs in position to win. Chicago's bullpen is shaky, but I'll trust it today at least.
