Wainwright guides Cards to win

St. Louis earned a 5-1 home win Wednesday afternoon against Washington as it improved to 85-67 overall and 49-29 at home. Tommy Edman led the Cardinals as he finished 2-for-3 with a home run, two runs scored and two RBIs. Matt Wieters went 1-for-1 with a pinch-hit two-run home run. Paul DeJong was 1-for-3 with a double, a run scored and an RBI. Adam Wainwright picked up the win as he allowed one unearned run on eight hits with three strikeouts and one walk across seven innings. Jack Flaherty will start tonight as he enters with a 10-8 record, 3.05 ERA and 1.03 WHIP plus 206 strikeouts over 174 1/3 innings.

Cubs drop second straight

Chicago was edged by a 3-2 score at home Wednesday night against Cincinnati to fall to 82-70 overall and 51-26 at home. Willson Contreras led the way offensively as he finished 1-for-4 with a solo home run. Nicholas Castellanos ended the contest 1-for-4 with a double and a run scored. Ian Happ was 1-for-1 with a pinch-hit double. James Norwood took the loss in relief as he allowed one earned run on two hits with no strikeouts and two walks in one-third of an inning. Kyle Hendricks gets the start today for the Cubs as he comes with an 11-9 record, 3.26 ERA and 1.12 WHIP plus 139 strikeouts over 165 2/3 innings pitched.

MLB Betting Trends

St. Louis

The Cardinals are 7-1 in their last eight Thursday games. St. Louis is 8-3 in the last 11 Flaherty starts.

Chicago

The Cubs are 7-0 in their last seven series openers. Chicago is 47-23 in its last 70 home games.

Prediction:

This should be a fun, well-played game but with the Cubs playing so well at home lately and Hendricks usually stepping up in big games I'm siding with the Cubs here to trim the deficit in the division to two games. Flaherty has been fantastic in the second half, but can be vulnerable sometimes against left-handed bats. Someone like Kyle Schwarber might provide the difference here.
