deGrom gets no-decision
Jacob deGrom was again in fine form against one of the best offenses in baseball Sunday afternoon, allowing three earned runs on five hits with 12 strikeouts and a walk over seven innings to get a no-decision in a 4-3 loss at the Red Sox. Seth Lugo took the loss in relief as he allowed one earned run on one hit with one strikeout over one inning. Amed Rosario helped pace the offense as he finished 2-for-4 with a double, a run and an RBI. Michael Conforto finished 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI. Jay Bruce was 1-for-3 with a walk and a run.
Phillies fall in series finale against Marlins
Philadelphia had ended a five-game losing streak with a pair of home wins over Miami, but could not finish the sweep with a 6-4 loss Sunday. Cesar Hernandez went 1-for-5 with a solo home run from the leadoff spot. Rhys Hoskins was 2-for-5 with a double. Aaron Altherr finished 2-for-2 with two doubles and a run after entering as a reserve. Roman Quinn finished 1-for-4 with a run and two RBIs. Nick Pivetta suffered the loss as he allowed three earned runs on four hits with eight strikeouts plus a walk over five innings.
Zack Wheeler (11-7, 3.23 ERA) will start today for New York, while the Phillies counter with Jake Arrieta (10-9, 3.66).
MLB Betting Trends
New York
The Mets are 10-2 in Wheeler's last 12 starts. The under is 5-2-2 in the last nine New York road games.
Philadelphia
The Phillies are 2-6 in their last eight games overall. Philadelphia is 31-65 in the last 96 meetings.
Prediction:
Wheeler has had a fine season overall and he has been particularly superb since the All-Star Break, while Arrieta has been mostly positive this season for the Phillies but his reduced stuff leaves him vulnerable to the occasional horrendous outing. With how badly Philadelphia has struggled lately, I really like taking my chances on the Mets today behind another Wheeler gem.
