Mets ride strong Syndergaard start
New York rolled to a 7-3 victory Monday afternoon in its series opener at Washington to improve to 70-67 overall and 33-40 on the road. Noah Syndergaard picked up the win on the mound as he gave up three hits with 10 strikeouts and no walks over seven innings of work. Jeff McNeil helped lead the Mets offense as he went 1-for-4 with a home run, a walk and two RBIs. J.D. Davis finished 3-for-5 with a double, two runs scored and two RBIs. Brandon Nimmo was 1-for-3 with two walks, a run scored and an RBI. Jacob deGrom gets the start today for New York as he enters with an 8-8 record, 2.66 ERA and 1.02 WHIP plus 214 strikeouts over 169 innings pitched.
Cabrera homers in defeat
Washington did not score until the ninth inning Monday afternoon in a 7-3 home loss to New York. Asdrubal Cabrera paced the offense as he finished 1-for-4 with a home run and three RBIs. Trea Turner was 2-for-4 with a stolen base and a run scored. Anthony Rendon went 1-for-3 with a double, a walk and a run. Joe Ross suffered the loss as he allowed seven earned runs on eight hits with four strikeouts and three walks over 3 2/3 innings. Max Scherzer draws the start tonight for the Nationals as he comes in with a 9-5 record, 2.46 ERA and 1.02 WHIP plus 200 strikeouts over 142 2/3 innings of work.
MLB Betting Trends
New York
The Mets are 3-7 in their last 10 games overall. New York is 8-17 in the last 25 deGrom starts.
Washington
The Nationals are 4-1 in their last five home games. Washington is 9-1 in the last 10 Scherzer starts.
Prediction:
This will be the third Scherzer start since returning from injury and he threw 89 pitches his last outing, so he should see close to a full allotment of pitches in this start. But the Nationals could also err on the side of caution as he approaches 100 pitches. I expect deGrom to match him pitch for pitch and while both bullpens have had their struggles this season, I'm going to take a shot on the dog as the Washington bullpen is capable of imploding at any moment.
