Cubs hammered in series finale
Chicago began its day in fine fashion Wednesday as it secured a 2-1 win in 11 innings over the Mets at home to complete a game suspended the day before. But in the regularly scheduled series finale, the Cubs were on the losing end of a 10-3 decision. Anthony Rizzo was 1-for-3 with a walk to help pace the offense. Willson Contreras went 2-for-3 with a double, a walk and two runs. Victor Caratini finished 1-for-2 with a 2-run home run off the bench. Alec Mills took the loss as he allowed four earned runs on five hits with five strikeouts and two walks over five innings.
Mike Montgomery (4-4, 3.62 ERA) will draw the start today for the Cubs.
Foltynewicz dominating lately
Braves hurler Mike Foltynewicz had a rough stretch after the All-Star Break, but he's busted out in a big way over his last few starts and has has given up only three earned runs over his last 26 2/3 innings. In his last start, Foltynewicz gave up one earned run on two hits with eight strikeouts and two walks over six innings but also took the tough-luck loss in a 1-0 defeat at Miami. He previously had thrown seven shutout innings at home versus the Rockies, but came away with a no-decision.
MLB Betting Trends
Chicago
The under is 8-1 in the last nine Cubs road games. Chicago is 7-2 in its last nine overall.
Atlanta
The Braves are 7-17 in the last 24 meetings. Atlanta is 4-0 in its last four games versus the NL Central.
Prediction:
Cubs manager Joe Maddon continues to shuffle his lineup, looking for some kind of spark. That doesn't bode well against a pitcher throwing with a lot of confidence in Foltynewicz. The night grew longer for the Braves Wednesday as their game went into a rain delay against Tampa Bay, but staying at home and having the day time to rest up should allow them to re-energize for this game. Look for Atlanta to get a victory here in the battle of first place ball clubs.
