Nationals’ Strasburg hit hard in first game off disabled list
Stephen Strasburg let in five runs in four innings against the Phillies on Wednesday and did not factor into the decision. He struck out five, issued one walk and surrendered seven knocks -- including home runs by Maikel Franco and Justin Bour. It is not uncommon to see good pitchers struggle in their first starts after coming off the disabled list and today was no exception. Strasburg was activated earlier today after missing a month with a pinched nerve in his neck. He is 6-7 with an uncharacteristic 4.23 ERA in 15 starts this season.
Phillies’ Eflin coughs up five runs in 3 1/3 innings vs. Nats
Zach Eflin was touched up for five runs (four earned) in 3 1/3 innings but escaped with a no-decision against the Nationals on Wednesday. He gave up RBI knocks to Anthony Rendon, Bryce Harper, Juan Soto and Matt Wieters in the sub-par outing. He was actually lucky he didn't give up more runs considering he allowed 10 hits and two walks and uncorked a wild pitch in such a brief time on the mound. Despite the poor game today Eflin has improved a lot in his third season, turning in a 9-4 record with a 3.93 ERA in 18 starts. He had a 5.54 ERA in 2016 and a 6.16 ERA last year, so he's made remarkable strides and has developed into a good fantasy starter at the age of 24. He has 93 strikeouts and 24 walks in 100 2/3 frames.
MLB Betting Trends
Washington
The Nationals are 3-9 in their last 12 road games and 2-5 in their last seven games coming off a win.
Philadelphia
The Phillies are 2-6 in their last eight games overall but 15-6 in their last 21 home games.
Prediction:
The over is 7-3 in Strasburg’s last 10 starts, is 5-0 in his last six outings when he starts the first game of a series, and is 6-0 in his last six starts after the Nationals scored five runs or more in their previous game. On the other side, the over hit in five of the Phillies’ last seven games, is 4-1 in their last five games when facing a team with a losing record, and is 4-1 in their last five games versus a right-handed starter.
The Pick: Nationals/Phillies over 9
