Scherzer outdueled by Nola
Max Scherzer had another strong outing Thursday in a 2-0 loss at the Phillies, but could not get any run support as Philadelphia starter Aaron Nola spun a shutout. Scherzer gave up twon earned runs on two hits with 10 strikeouts and four walks over seven innings. Trea Turner paced the offense by going 1-for-3 with a walk. Adam Eaton, Mark Reynolds and Spencer Kieboom all had a double.
Mets slowed down by Bumgarner
Jacob deGrom returned to getting very little support from his teammates Thursday as New York fell 3-1 at home to the Giants. In six innings of work, deGrom gave up two runs (one earned) on four hits with 10 strikeouts and four walks to take the loss. The Mets only managed one run off Madison Bumgarner over eight innings. Todd Frazier provided the only offense with a solo home run in four at-bats. Jose Bautista was a perfect 2-for-2 with a walk.
Washington will go with Gio Gonzalez (7-10, 4.51 ERA) on the mound today, while New York turns to Jason Vargas (3-8, 7.67).
MLB Betting Trends
Washington
The over is 6-1-2 in the last nine Nats games following a loss. Washington is 51-19 in its last 70 games at New York.
New York
The Mets are 7-1 in their last eight games following a loss. New York is 4-9 in its last 13 Friday games.
Prediction:
I can't trust Gonzalez or the Nationals here. Although Vargas is having a very rough season, he's pitched better as of late and is backed by a Mets offense that has held its own most of the time lately. Washington is in a freefall and I think it continues here.
