DeJong walks it off

Paul DeJong led off the bottom of the ninth with a solo home run to break a tie and send the Cardinals to a 7-6 victory last night over Washington. It was his only hit in five at-bats. Matt Carpenter helped lead the way as he finished 2-for-4 with a home run, a walk, two runs and three RBIs. Jose Martinez ended the game 3-for-4. Marcell Ozuna went 2-for-5 with an RBI. Jedd Gyorko was 2-for-3 with a solo home run. Kolten Wong went 2-for-3 with a walk and a run scored. Daniel Hudson struck out one in two-thirds of an inning of relief to earn the win.

Harper, Soto homer in loss

Washington led 4-2 in the eighth inning before allowing four runs, but then tied it at 6-6 in the ninth inning only to lose it in the bottom half of the frame. Bryce Harper helped pace the Nats offense by going 1-for-4 with a solo home run. Anthony Rendon was 2-for-3 with a walk and three runs. Juan Soto finished 1-for-2 with a home run, a walk, two runs and two RBIs. Koda Glover suffered the loss in relief as he allowed a home run to the only batter he faced.

Gio Gonzalez (7-8, 3.89 ERA) will start today for Washington, while St. Louis is going with John Gant (4-4, 3.89).

MLB Betting Trends

Washington

The under is 19-7 in the last 26 Nationals games on Tuesdays. Washington is 26-12 in its last 38 Tuesday games.

St. Louis

The Cardinals are 3-9 in Gant's last 12 starts. The over is 7-2-1 in the last 10 meetings.

Prediction:

Gonzalez has pitched better as of late and the Cardinals are coming off an emotional high. Gant is hittable and Washington has plenty of left-handed bats to get after him. I'm taking Washington to even the series here as it needs wins every bit as badly as St. Louis.
