Phillies’ Arrieta spins eight-inning gem in Arizona vs. D-Backs
Jake Arrieta fired eight scoreless innings in a no-decision against the Diamondbacks on Monday. It was a sweltering 111 degrees outside Chase Field at first pitch, but that extreme heat seems mild in comparison to the blistering performance of Arrieta in this one. The 32-year-old righty only struck out four batters, but he scattered three hits and a pair of walks over eight shutout frames. He departed in line for the win, but had to settle for a no-decision after the Phillies bullpen failed to slam the door in the ninth. After a rocky start to his Philadelphia tenure, he has now allowed three runs or less in eight of his last nine starts dating back to June 20. He’s 9-6 with a 3.11 ERA, 1.20 WHIP and 91/40 K/BB ratio in 22 starts.
Padres’ Lucchesi fans nine in no-decision vs. Cubs
Joey Lucchesi held the Cubs to three runs -- two earned -- over 5 2/3 innings Sunday in a no-decision. San Diego wound up winning the game 10-6, but it was tied when Lucchesi departed. The rookie left-hander struck out nine batters and didn't issue a walk, showing no ill effects from the stomach bug that pushed his turn in the rotation back one day. Lucchesi boasts a 3.70 ERA, 1.26 WHIP, and 87/28 K/BB ratio through his first 82 2/3 major league frames. He'll get the Phillies at home next.
