Pittsburgh Pirates Fantasy Spin
Adam Frazier launched a leadoff homer in the Pirates’ loss -- their seventh consecutive defeat -- to the Cardinals on Saturday. Frazier took Cardinals starter Adam Wainwright deep to right field in the opening frame. It was his first round-tripper since July 26 and represented the Pirates’ lone extra-base hit of the contest. The 27-year-old utilityman owns a .264/.324/.387 triple-slash line with 56 runs scored, six home runs, 29 RBI and three stolen bases in 437 plate appearances. There's some fantasy appeal in deeper mixed leagues thanks to his versatility, but he doesn't offer enough speed or over-the-fence pop to warrant a roster spot in shallow formats.
St. Louis Cardinals Fantasy Spin
Tommy Edman went 2-for-4 with a double and a run scored to propel the Cardinals to a 3-1 victory over the Pirates on Saturday. Edman scorched a line-drive into the right-center field gap in the sixth inning and was able to scamper home with the go-ahead run on the play thanks to a bizarre throwing error by Pirates shortstop Kevin Newman, who uncorked an errant throw, which rolled into the Bucs’ dugout for a two-base error. The unheralded 24-year-old utilityman has carved out a pivotal role for the Cardinals, hitting .255/.284/.423 with 20 runs scored, four home runs, 15 RBI and six stolen bases in 155 plate appearances since his promotion to the big leagues back in early-June. He doesn’t profile as a potential fantasy superstar long-term, but he’s certainly worth monitoring in deeper mixed leagues.
