Brought in with a one-run lead in the eighth, Diego Castillo took a blown save Friday against the Yankees. Castillo walked two, hit a batter and then gave up a game-tying sac fly before getting an inning-ending double play. This was the first time the Mariners had used Castillo prior to the ninth inning in four appearances since acquiring him from the Rays. The plan was probably to go with Drew Steckenrider in a ninth-inning save chance tonight, but that didn't materialize. Steckenrider did pitch a scoreless ninth in a tie game, and Erik Swanson took a blown save for letting the automatic runner score in the 10th.

Brett Gardner delivered a game-winning single in the bottom of the 11th as the Yankees edged the Mariners 3-2 on Friday. Gardner also scored the Yankees' first run of the game in the eighth after walking to lead off the inning. The Yankees won tonight even though they were throwing a bullpen game and didn't have their closer available. Nine pitchers combined to allow two runs -- one earned -- over 11 innings, with the win going to Albert Abreu. Every single one of those pitchers recorded between three and five outs.
