Flaherty throws six shutout innings
St. Louis starting pitcher Jack Flaherty threw six shutout innings Sunday afternoon in a 2-1 win at the Pirates. He surrendered only three hits while striking out seven and walking one. Matt Carpenter helped pace the Cards offense by going 1-for-5 with a solo home run, his 29th of the season. Yadier Molina finished 2-for-5 with a run. Jose Martinez ended the night 2-for-4. Jedd Gyorko went 1-for-4 with an RBI. Bud Norris threw a spotless ninth inning with two strikeouts for his 21st save.
Marlins lose sixth straight
Miami dropped a 5-3 contest yesterday afternoon at the Phillies, their sixth straight defeat. Derek Dietrich went 2-for-5 with a home run and two RBIs to lead the Marlins offense. Brian Anderson ended the contest 3-for-5. Justin Bour went 1-for-4 with a solo home run. Drew Steckenrider took the loss as he surrendered two earned runs on three hits with two strikeouts in an inninf of relief.
Luke Weaver (6-9, 4.75 ERA) will draw the start today for the Cardinals, while Wei-Yin Chen (3-8, 5.86) gets the call for the Marlins.
MLB Betting Trends
St. Louis
The Cardinals are 9-2 in their last 11 meetings in Miami. The over is 8-3 in the last 11 St. Louis road games.
Miami
The Marlins are 6-2 in their last eight Monday games. The under is 5-2-1 in the last eight Miami games overall.
Prediction:
Neither of these starting pitchers is trustworthy, although Chen is an extreme flyball pitcher who does his best work at home in a park tailored for flyouts. Even so, I like him to regress at home as some of those flyouts are bound to make it over the fence sooner or later. As for Weaver, he showed a lot of promise last season but this year he's been a disaster and is lucky to still have a rotation spot. With both pitchers underwhelming, I'm leaning heavily toward the over here.
