Pirates slowed down by Cards
Pittsburgh dropped the series finale Sunday at home versus St. Louis by a count of 2-1. Trevor Williams suffered the loss as he gave up two earned runs on nine hits with three strikeouts and no walks over five innings. Adam Frazier paced the offense by going 2-for-4 with a double and a solo home run that pulled the Pirates to within 2-1 in the seventh. Jordy Mercer finished 1-for-1 with a walk, while Jose Osuna and Elias Diaz had the only other hits for Pittsburgh.
Rockies blow lead, win in 10th
Colorado has had bullpen issues all season and it reared its ugly head Sunday afternoon at Milwaukee as a 4-1 lead in the ninth inning quickly turned into a 4-4 tie. It ruined an outstanding start by Jon Gray, who allowed one earned run over eight innings. But Nolan Arenado gave the Rockies the lead again in the 11th with a solo homer and the visitors held on for a 5-4 win. D.J. LeMahieu helped lead Colorado as he went 2-for-5 with a double, two runs and an RBI. Arenado was 3-for-5 with the homer plus a walk and two runs. Trevor Story went 1-for-6 with a home run and four RBIs. Scott Oberg earned the win in relief as he allowed one hit in an inning of work. Seunghwan Oh worked around two hits to pick up his first save with the Rockies.
Joe Musgrove (4-5, 3.63 ERA) will start today for the Pirates, while Kyle Freeland (9-7, 3.20) will go for the Rockies.
MLB Betting Trends
Pittsburgh
The Pirates are 15-6 in their last 21 games overall. Pittsburgh is 9-3 in its last 12 meetings in Colorado.
Colorado
The under is 12-3-1 in the last 16 Rockies home games. Colorado is 16-5 in its last 21 home games.
Prediction:
Colorado struggled on its road trip, but hasn't been any better at home (27-24) than it has been away (32-28) this season. Musgrove and the Pirates still have their own outside playoff aspirations and while a longshot, crazier things have happened. They'll need to take advantage of a struggling Rockies team that barely hung on to win yesterday even after controlling much of the game. I'm going to take a shot on Pittsburgh pulling off the upset in this spot.
