Phillies' Arrieta works seven strong innings vs. Red Sox
Jake Arrieta permitted just one run while fanning seven over seven innings in the Phillies' 3-1 win over the Red Sox on Tuesday. The Phillies fell Monday in spite of Aaron Nola's gem, but they got back in the win column in this one on the strength of Arrieta's fine effort. The veteran right-hander gave up six hits and didn't issue a walk to go along with his seven punchouts. It's just the second time in 21 starts this season that Arrieta didn't walk a batter.
Diamondbacks' Godley strikes out 10 over seven innings
Zack Godley struck out 10 batters and allowed three hits over seven scoreless innings in the Diamondbacks' 6-0 win over the Rangers on Tuesday. Godley became the first pitcher since 1974 to strike out the first batter he faced in each of the seven innings he pitched. He was in complete control of his four-pitch repertoire, racking up an eye-popping 19 swinging strikes, while scattering a pair of hits (both singles) and one walk over seven frames. He threw 75 of 104 pitches for strikes and retired 16 of the final 18 batters he faced after giving up a single to Robinson Chirinos and walking Willie Calhoun with two outs in the second inning. With the victory, Godley is 12-6 with a 4.46 ERA, 1.47 WHIP and a 130/59 K/BB ratio in 22 starts.
