Padres' Lucchesi allows five runs in loss to Diamondbacks
Joey Lucchesi allowed five earned runs over 4 1/3 innings Sunday in a loss to the Diamondbacks. Paul Goldschmidt launched a two-run homer in the top of the first inning and A.J. Pollock and Nick Ahmed both went yard in the top of the fourth. Lucchesi gave up six total hits and three walks, falling to 5-6 on the season with his ERA rising to 3.74.
Cubs' Lester labors through five vs. Pirates
Jon Lester scuffled through five innings Tuesday in Pittsburgh, allowing four runs on seven hits and three walks in a loss to the Pirates. David Freese was Lester’s nemesis with a pair of RBI doubles and he also served up a two-run home run to Francisco Cervelli. Lester needed 101 pitches to get through his five innings. It’s the fifth time in his last six starts and already the 12th time this season that Lester has walked three-plus batters in a game. The veteran left-hander’s walks continue to rise and his velocity continues to drop, which obviously isn’t a good combo.
