Mets prevail in pitcher's duel
New York secured a split of its four-game series at Pittsburgh over the weekend with a 1-0 victory Sunday afternoon. Zack Wheeler threw six shutout innings, giving up five hits with seven strikeouts and one walk. Anthony Swarzak struck out two in a perfect ninth inning for his third save. Austin Jackson went 2-for-3 with a walk to help lead the Mets offense. Wheeler helped his own cause by driving in the lone run with a double. Luis Guillorme went 1-for-4 and scored the run.
Nats shut out at Marlins
Washington dropped the final two games of its four-game series at Miami, losing 5-0 on Sunday. The Nationals only managed two hits, led by Bryce Harper as he went 1-for-2 with a pair of walks. Matt Adams ended the game 1-for-4. Jeremy Hellickson took the loss as he gave up five runs (three earned) on eight hits with four strikeouts and no walks over 4 2/3 innings.
Steven Matz (5-8, 3.79 ERA) will start today for New York, while Washington turns to Tanner Roark (4-12, 4.55).
MLB Betting Trends
New York
The Mets are 9-23 in their last 32 Tuesday games. New York is 1-7 in Matz's last eight Tuesday starts.
Washington
The under is 20-7 in the last 27 Washington games on Tuesdays. Washington is 1-7 in Roark's last eight starts.
Prediction:
Roark has struggled in most of his starts this season, but he was spectacular last time out versus Miami as he threw eight shutout innings with 11 strikeouts. If he fixed a flaw, he should be in for a solid second hald. As poor as Washington has been this season, the talent is still there. New York is still struggling offensively and lost another piece when it traded Asdrubal Cabrera last week. Go with Washington to open this series with a win.
