Tigers take series opener
Detroit pulled away in the last two innings Monday night to secure a 7-2 victory at Los Angeles in the series opener. Miguel Cabrera helped lead the Tigers offense as he finished 2-for-4 with a home run and three RBIs. JaCoby Jones went 2-for-4 with a double, a walk, a run scored and an RBI. Jordy Mercer ended the game 2-for-4 with a solo homer and two runs scored. Jordan Zimmermann earned his first win of the season as he allowed two earned runs on four hits with two strikeouts and no walks over 5 1/3 innings. Drew VerHagen gets the start tonight as he enters with a 1-1 record, 14.40 ERA and 3.00 ERA plus 11 strikeouts over 10 innings of work.
Calhoun homers in defeat
Los Angeles lost by a count of 7-2 at home Monday night to drop to 55-53 overall and 28-27 at home. Kole Calhoun paced the Angels offense as he went 1-for-4 with a solo home run. Matt Thaiss went 2-for-3 with a run scored. David Fletcher finished 1-for-4 with a double and an RBI. Jaime Barria suffered the loss as he allowed three runs (two earned) on four hits with five strikeouts and no walks over five innings. Griffin Canning will start tonight for LA as he comes in with a 3-6 record, 5.15 ERA and 1.23 WHIP with 79 strikeouts over 73 1/3 innings.
MLB Betting Trends
Detroit
The Tigers are 31-70 in their last 101 road games. Detorit is 1-4 in its last five Tuesday games.
Los Angeles
The Angels are 1-6 in their last seven home games. Los Angeles is 5-2 in the last seven Canning home starts.
Prediction:
The Angels lost three of four at home against Baltimore and then proceeded to lose the home opener against an even worse team in Detroit. Needless to say, that is bad. But here is a big bounce back opportunity as the Tigers send VerHagen to the mound as his WHIP shows he is allowing the bases loaded per inning on average. Canning started his rookie campaign out strong before hitting a wall, but I think he finds his groove again here against the Tigers. At the very least, he should get enough run support as I don't see any way VerHagen navigates through without giving up several runs. Go with the hosts today on the runline.
