Diamondbacks' Ray allows five runs to Rockies
Robbie Ray surrendered five runs and eight hits in 5 1/3 innings Friday against the Rockies. Ray gave up a pair of homers, bringing his total allowed to seven in 20 innings this month. As many batters as he walks, he can't afford to keep getting bitten by the long ball. He still has some mixed league value, but he's not the pitcher he was last year.
Cubs' Lester walks five, allows eight runs in loss
Jon Lester was knocked around for eight runs over three-plus innings in Friday’s blowout loss to the Cardinals. Lester was pulled after loading the bases to begin the fourth inning. It was his shortest outing of the season. With the Cubs scheduled to play a doubleheader on Saturday, the club ended up using three position players to pitch before the day was over. Lester walked five batters in the loss while giving up seven hits, including a pair of homers. His has been creeping up this month and now sits at 3.14 for the year. Given his peripherals, he was never a strong bet to keep his ERA below 3.00 anyway. He’ll attempt to rebound against the Diamondbacks next time out.
MLB Betting Trends
Arizona
The Diamondbacks are 14-6 in Ray's last 20 starts.
Chicago
The Cubs are 51-22 in Lester's last 73 starts overall.
Prediction:
I don't think Lester's last blow up was a fluke. He owns a 3.14 ERA but a 4.67 FIP and 4.78 xFIP. More trouble could be on its way and with the D-Backs playing well at the moment, they're worth a flier getting plus odds. In fact, the Diamondbacks are 14-6 in Ray's last 20 starts and 9-3 in his last 12 road outings so they could very well have the pitching advantage today.
The Pick: Arizona Diamondbacks +100
