Oakland bounces back
Oakland took an 11-1 loss at the hands of Houston on Monday, but were able to bounce back on Tuesday with a 4-3 victory in 11 innings. Oakland is now 58-44 on the season, 27-24 on the road and 54-48 with the under. The A’s have Chris Bassitt taking the mound today. He is 7-4 on the year with a 3.96 ERA.
The Athletics put up three runs in the ninth and then eventually won the game in the 11th when Ramon Laureano had a ground rule double to bring home the winning run. Matt Olson drove in the three runs in the ninth with his 21st home run of the season. Mike Fiers pitched pretty well, going 7.2 innings and allowing just two runs on six hits. He took a no-decision while Yusmeiro Petit got the win by pitching a perfect 10th and 11th inning.
Astros end win streak
Houston saw its six-game win streak come to an end on Tuesday night in the extra-innings loss to the Athletics. The Astros are now 65-38 overall, 37-15 at home and 54-44 with the under. Houston has Justin Verlander getting the start today. He is 12-4 on the season with a 2.99 ERA.
Wade Miley threw eight scoreless innings for the Astros on Tuesday, only to give up a pair of runs in the ninth that led to extra innings. Collin McHugh ended up taking the loss by giving up the winning run in the 11th. Yuli Gurriel hit his 20th home run of the season to lead Houston at the plate. Gurriel drove in two of the three runs while Aledmys Diaz drove in the other run.
MLB Betting Trends
Oakland
The Athletics have won seven straight Game 3’s of a series and eight of their last 10 division games.
Houston
The Astros have won six of their last seven games on grass and 24 of Verlander’s last 31 starts against division opponents.
Prediction:
Verlander has had a good year, but is trending slightly in the wrong direction. He has seen his ERA grow by half a run since mid-June. He isn’t getting beat up, but giving up multiple runs in every start while not getting as deep into games as he usually does. Bassitt is in a similar boat. He doesn’t get deep into games and has allowed multiple runs in nine of his last 10 outings. Both men have had a start against their opponent, with Verlander locking up Oakland and Bassitt giving up three runs in six innings. I don’t love the odds, but I still have to ride with Verlander and the Astros.
MLB Prediction: Houston Astros -215
