Astros shutout in first game back
In the first game scheduled after the All-Star Break, Houston lost by a count of 5-0 Thursday night at Texas. George Springer helped pace the Astros offensively as he went 2-for-4 with a double. Alex Bregman was 1-for-1 plus a walk before leaving the game after taking a grounder to the jaw, which required four stitches. Josh Reddick finished 1-for-3 plus a walk. Framber Valdez took the loss as he surrendered four earned runs on four hits over two-thirds of an inning, striking out none and walking three. Gerrit Cole draws the start tonight as he enters with a 9-5 record, 3.09 ERA and 1.02 WHIP with 170 strikeouts over 116 2/3 innings.
Lynn masterful in win
Lance Lynn threw seven shutout innings Thursday night in a 5-0 home victory over Houston as Texas improved to 49-42 overall and 30-17 at home. Lynn gave up six hits with two walks and 11 strikeouts over his seven innings of work. Rougned Odor helped lead the Rangers offense as he was 2-for-3 with a pair of doubles, a walk, a run and two RBIs. Shin-Soo Choo went 2-for-4 with a walk and a run. Jeff Mathis ended the game 1-for-3 with a walk and an RBI. MLB Betting Trends
Houston
The Astros are 7-2 in their last nine games overall. Houston is 4-0 in the last four Cole starts versus the AL West.
Texas
The Rangers are 4-1 in the last five Chavez starts on grass. Texas is 7-2 in its last nine games versus a right-handed starter.
Prediction:
Texas might need the win more, but I don't love this matchup even with Bregman on the shelf. Cole is putting together a fantastic season and I expect that to continue tonight. Look for the Astros to even this series at a game apiece as they show why they have a healthy cushion in the AL West standings.
