Cardinals' Flaherty strikes out seven in road loss to Diamondbacks
Jack Flaherty allowed four earned runs, four hits and a walk with seven strikeouts over six innings in a road loss in Arizona on Tuesday. Flaherty has won just once across his past seven outings, but it's been mostly due to a lack of run support. He has an outstanding 3.19 ERA and 1.05 WHIP across 67 2/3 innings in 12 starts with the Cardinals, including quality starts in four of his past eight appearances. He has racked up 80 strikeouts over 67 2/3 innings to endear himself to fantasy owners. He'll look to add to his totals Sunday in San Francisco opposite Madison Bumgarner.
Giants' Bumgarner done in by poor seventh inning vs. Rockies
Madison Bumgarner allowed three runs over six-plus innings in a loss to the Rockies on Monday. Bumgarner breezed through the first six innings without giving up a run, but he loaded the bases with no outs before exiting in the seventh, and Reyes Moronta -- and some poor San Francisco defense -- allowed all three to come home to give him the loss. He didn’t have his best control with three walks, but he was able to fan five, and pitched better than the box score indicates. Bumgarner will square off against the Cardinals on Saturday.
MLB Betting Trends
St. Louis
The Cardinals have won six of their last eight road games after beating the Giants 3-2 on Saturday.
San Francisco
The Giants have won 10 of their last 11 games played on Sunday.
Prediction:
Even though it's extra juice, I'm taking the under in the first five innings. I expect both of these starting pitchers to throw well but with the total sitting at just 7.5, I don't want to be done in if the bullpen of either team isn't on their game. The under is 5-0-1 in Flathery's last six road starts, is 12-3-1 in his last 16 outings overall, is 5-1 in the Giants' last six games, is 15-5-2 in Bumgarner's last 22 starts and is 9-4 in Brian O'Nora's last 13 games behind home plate.
The Pick: Cardinals/Giants first 5 under 4 (-125)
