Padres topped again

San Diego has dropped the first two games of this series following the 6-3 loss to the Pirates on Saturday. The Padres are 38-39 overall, 17-19 on the road and 37-34 with the over. San Diego has Joey Lucchesi getting the start today. He is 6-4 on the season with a 3.74 ERA.

The Padres just couldn’t get much going at the plate on Saturday, amassing just six hits in the game. Manny Machado had two of the six hits and drove in two of the three runs. He hit his 16th home run in the fourth inning. Chris Paddack pitched five innings and gave up two runs on three walks and five hits, but didn’t take the loss. Craig Stammen took the loss in relief, as he allowed four runs over one inning.

Pirates win a third straight

Pittsburgh has put together a three-game winning streak thanks to Saturday’s 3-run win over the Padres. The Pirates are now 35-40 on the season, 16-19 at home and 44-28 with the over. Pittsburgh has Steven Brault getting the start this afternoon. He is 3-1 on the year with a 4.40 ERA.

A four-run eighth inning sparked the Pittsburgh victory on Saturday. Adam Frazier got things started with a two-run single while Jose Osuna also drove in a pair of runs in the win on a two-run home run. On the mound, Chris Archer had a good start by his standards. He pitched five innings and allowed one run on two hits with five strikeouts. Kyle Crick got the win in relief while Felipe Vazquez recorded the final out of the game to earn his 19th save of the season.

MLB Betting Trends

San Diego

The Padres have lost seven of their last nine road games and six straight against teams with a losing record.

Pittsburgh

The Pirates have won five of their last six home games and they are 5-2 in Brault’s last seven starts.

Prediction:

Brault has been lowering his ERA for the last month after a really poor start to the season. He has dropped it from 8.24 to 4.40 since May 18. Lucchesi has been decent in his own right, but I worry about San Diego’s hitting on the road right now. The Padres haven’t mustered much in this series and Pittsburgh has had the edge with its bullpen. I actually think Brault has the better start today while the Pittsburgh hitters come through in the clutch again.

MLB Prediction: Pittsburgh Pirates +140
