Blue Jays on a skid

Toronto is riding a four-game losing streak coming into today’s game, as they lost all four at home to the Yankees and Diamondbacks, scoring just six runs over the four games. The Jays are 23-42 on the season, 11-20 on the road and 34-29 with the under. Toronto has Trent Thornton getting the start tonight. He is 1-4 on the season with a 4.73 ERA.

The Blue Jays have one of the worst offenses in the league, averaging only 3.72 runs per game while hitting a league-worst .218 from the plate. On the mound, Toronto has a 4.59 ERA as a staff with a 1.41 team WHIP. The Jays are being led by Justin Smoak, who has 12 home runs and 33 RBI, while Randal Grichuk has nine doubles with 12 home runs and 25 RBI.

Orioles return home

Baltimore wrapped up a six-game road trip last week by going 2-4, losing series to the Rangers and the Astros. Baltimore is now 20-45 on the season, 8-23 at home and 33-30 with the under. The Orioles are turning to John Means today. He is 5-4 on the year with a 2.67 ERA.

The Orioles are not too impressive on offense either, averaging just 4.02 runs per game while hitting .237 as a team. They have the league’s worst pitching staff as well, putting up a 5.53 ERA as a staff with a 1.44 WHIP. Dwight Smith Jr. has been leading the team with 11 doubles, 11 home runs and 41 RBI, but he is dealing with a concussion that has him listed as out for today. Renato Nunez is adding 10 doubles, 16 home runs and 36 RBI for the Orioles.

MLB Betting Trends

Toronto

The Blue Jays are just 8-25 in their last 33 games overall and 2-6 in their last eight division games.

Baltimore

The Orioles have lost 44 of their last 54 series openers and 40 of their last 53 following a day off.

Prediction:

Neither team inspires much confidence today, but Means has actually been pretty good for the league’s worst pitching staff. He has allowed just one run or less in seven of his last 10 appearances. Thornton can’t say the same, he has given up at least three runs in three straight starts. Toronto’s hitting has been a real concern and I think that will continue against Means. That should open the door for Baltimore to pick up a few runs and grind out a win at home.

MLB Prediction: Toronto Blue Jays -115
