O's drop sixth in a row
A bases-loaded walk in the top of the ninth inning at home Thursday afternoon against the Yankees sent Baltimore to a 6-5 defeat. The Orioles (15-35, 6-19 at home) had scored four runs in the bottom of the eighth to tie it at 5-5. Renato Nunez paced Baltimore offensively as he went 2-for-4 with a home run, two runs and three RBIs. Stevie Wilkerson was 1-for-3 with a walk and a run scored. Trey Mancini finished 1-for-4 with a run and an RBI. Mychal Givens took the loss in relief as he allowed one earned run on one hit with one strikeout and three walks over one inning of work. John Means draws the start tonight for Baltimore as he enters with a 5-4 record, 2.68 ERA and 1.10 WHIP with 34 strikeouts over 43 2/3 innings pitched.
Rockies unable to complete road sweep
Colorado won the first two games of its series at Pittsburgh, but fell 14-6 in Thursday afternoon's finale. Brendan Rodgers helped pace the Rockies offense as he finished 1-for-4 with a run and two RBIs. David Dahl went 2-for-5 with a run and an RBI. Nolan Arenado was 2-for-4 with a double and a run. Ian Desmond ended the contest 1-for-3 with a double and a run. Antonio Senzatela suffered the loss as he gave up eight earned runs on nine hits with two strikeouts and three walks over 3 1/3 innings. Jeff Hoffman will make his second start of the season tonight for Colorado as his first came back on April 23 when he took the loss in a 6-4 home defeat against Washington, giving up four earned runs on six hits with six strikeouts and no walks over five innings.
MLB Betting Trends
Baltimore
The Orioles are 4-0 in their last four games versus the NL West. Baltimore is 8-44 in its last 52 series openers.
Colorado
The Rockies are 4-0 in their last four interleague home games. Colorado is 1-4 in the last five Hoffman starts.
Prediction:
So the Orioles are on a record-setting pace for giving up home runs and now they must play in the thin air of Denver? It's hard to like the sounds of that. Means has done a pretty good job of keeping the ball in the park, but eventually he'll be turning it over to the bullpen and that's where it could become disastrous. Hoffman wasn't great in his start last month, but he did strike out more than one batter per inning and didn't walk anyone. He should find a bit more success against Baltimore and will have some run support providing room for error.
