Acuna Jr. homer sends Braves to win

Ronald Acuna Jr. broke a tie with a solo home run in the top of the eighth inning Friday night as Atlanta topped host Arizona by a count of 2-1. It was the only hit for Acuna in four at-bats. Dansby Swanson finished 3-for-4 with a triple and a run scored in the winning effort. Freddie Freeman was 2-for-4 with an RBI. Dan Winkler picked up the win in relief as he threw one spotless inning with one strikeout. Kevin Gausman will start tonight for the Braves as he enters with a 1-3 record, 5.00 ERA and 1.25 WHIP with 40 strikeouts over 36 innings of work.

D-Backs edged at home

Arizona lost by a score of 2-1 at home Friday night against Atlanta to drop to 22-17 overall and 8-8 at home. The Diamondbacks tied it at 1-1 in the bottom of the sixth on a David Peralta RBI triple, but gave up the go-ahead run two innings later. Ketel Marte went 1-for-4 with a double and a run to help pace the Arizona offense. Peralta was 2-for-4 with the triple and the RBI. Nick Ahmed finished 1-for-4 with a double. Yoan Lopez took the loss in relief as he gave up one earned run on two hits with one strikeout over one inning. Merrill Kelly starts tonight for the D-Backs as he comes in with a 3-3 record, 4.85 ERA and 1.49 WHIP with 31 strikeouts over 39 innings.

Prediction:

Gausman is an inconsistent pitcher, but he's also been a bit better this season than his numbers suggest. Kelly is a run-of-the-mill back end starter who hasn't fooled a lot of bats this season. Atlanta has the talent to be better than it has been, so at least splitting a road series if not winning three out of four at an overachieving Diamondbacks squad would be a step in the right direction.
