Yermín Mercedes (hand) began a minor league rehab assignment Thursday with Triple-A Charlotte. There isn't exactly an open spot for Mercedes at the big-league level, which means he'll likely remain at Triple-A Charlotte once he's fully healthy. The 29-year-old slugger was off to an excellent start in spring training before sustaining a hamate fracture in his left hand. He would make sense as a potential trade candidate later this summer.

Red Sox chief baseball officer Chaim Bloom said Saturday that Chris Sale (rib) has been delayed in his rehabilitation due to a personal, non-COVID, medical issue. Bloom added that Sale's medical issue isn't rib or arm related, which is an extremely positive sign, but it's expected to delay his return to the Red Sox' starting rotation by at least a few weeks. There isn't an exact timetable for his return, but it seems unlikely that he'll be back until sometime around midseason. The 33-year-old southpaw is expected to resume throwing soon. He's been sidelined since mid-March due to a stress fracture in his right rib cage.
