Red Sox fall in series opener
Boston lost by a count of 4-1 Monday night in its series opener at Baltimore to drop to 17-19 overall and 9-12 on the road. The Red Sox trailed 4-0 through two innings and scored their lone run in the top of the fifth on an Eduardo Nunez sacrifice fly but could draw no closer. Christian Vazquez went 2-for-3 at the dish with a double and scored the lone run to pace the Boston offense. Nunez finished 1-for-2 with the RBI. Josh Smith suffered the loss as he surrendered four earned runs on five hits over 3 1/3 innings, striking out three and walking two. Hector Velazquez will start tonight as he enters with an 0-2 record, 3.72 ERA and 1.40 WHIP with 19 strikeouts over 19 1/3 innings.
Villar, Means lead O's to win
Jonathan Villar hit a second-inning grand slam Monday night to help guide Baltimore to a 4-1 home win over Boston. The home run was Villar's lone hit in four at-bats. Rio Ruiz and Stevie Wilkerson both ended the night 2-for-4 with a run. Chris Davis went 1-for-2 with a walk and a run. John Means picked up the win on the mound as he surrendered one earned run on three hits with four strikeouts and no walks over seven innings. Mychal Givens threw the final 1 1/3 innings of perfect baseball for his fourth save, striking out two. David Hess takes the hill tonight for the Orioles as he comes in with a 1-4 record, 5.34 ERA and 1.25 WHIP with 22 strikeouts over 30 1/3 innings.
MLB Betting Trends
Boston
The Red Sox are 6-2 in their last eight road games. Boston is 39-17 in its last 56 Tuesday games.
Baltimore
The Orioles are 4-18 in the last 22 starts by Hess. Baltimore is 23-52 in its last 75 home games.
Prediction:
The Red Sox looked like junk offensively last night, but in a hitter's park against an extremely hittable pitcher it should all turn around tonight. Velasquez has been so-so this season, but he's had a number of solid starts in his MLB career and faces a lineup that doesn't provide an extreme challenge. Expect Boston to flip the script after dropping the opener last night.
