Athletics' bats come alive
Oakland scored early and often Friday night on its way to a 14-1 victory at Pittsburgh to end its six-game losing streak. The Athletics trailed 1-0 through one inning, but put up a five-spot in the second frame and added a combined six runs over the following two innings to make it a lopsided contest. Oakland was led offensive by a huge night from Josh Phegley as he finished 4-for-5 with two doubles, a home run, two runs scored and eight RBIs. Matt Chapman ended the night 3-for-6 with a double, a home run, two runs and two RBIs. Kendrys Morales went 3-for-4 with a walk, three runs and an RBI. Brett Anderson earned the win as he allowed one earned run on four hits with four strikeouts and two walks over six innings of work. Chris Bassitt draws the start tonight for Oakland as he enters with a 1-0 record, 0.75 ERA and 0.75 WHIP with 16 strikeouts over 12 innings.
Musgrove struggles in defeat
Pittsburgh starting pitcher Joe Musgrove entered Friday night's game with impressive numbers, but was battered to the tune of seven runs (five earned) over 2 2/3 innings in a 14-1 loss. He allowed six hits while striking out one and walking two. Adam Frazier was the lone Pirates player with multiple hits as he was 2-for-4 and scored the lone run. Melky Cabrera went 1-for-2 with a walk, while Josh Bell completed the night 1-for-4 with an RBI. Trevor Williams starts tonight for Pittsburgh and comes in with a 1-1 record, 3.38 ERA and 27 strikeouts over 37 1/3 innings.
MLB Betting Trends
Oakland
The Athletics are 14-6 in their last 20 Saturday games. Oakland is 5-1 in the last six Bassitt starts.
Pittsburgh
The Pirates are 0-6 in their last six home games. Pittsburgh is 6-0 in Williams' last six interleague starts.
Prediction:
Oakland is having a rough time lately, but sometimes all you need is one big night to spark things. Unfortunately, I don't see it that way today. Bassitt isn't nearly as good as his numbers suggest through two starts as there is a much larger sample size prior to this season that suggests he nothng more than a league average pitcher. Williams is consistent and reliable and should be able to hold down an offense that might have a quick cooling down after yesterday's explosion. Take the home team to bounce back tonight.
