Braves smacked by Padres

Atlanta lost by a count of 11-2 Thursday afternoon at home against San Diego to drop to 15-16 on the season. The Braves trailed 11-0 in the sixth inning before getting on the board with their only two runs, with Nick Markakis driving them both in with a single. Freddie Freeman was 1-for-3 with a walk and a run in the defeat. Markakis went 1-for-4 with the two RBIs. Johan Camargo and Charlie Culberson were each 2-for-4. Mike Foltynewicz took the loss as he surrendered six earned runs on eight hits with three strikeouts and no walks over 4 2/3 innings. Kevin Gausman draws the start today as he enters with a 1-2 record, 4.80 ERA and 1.07 WHIP plus 33 strikeouts over 30 innings.

Marlins snap four-game skid

Miami doubled up visiting Cleveland Wednesday night by a score of 4-2 to end its four-game losing streak and improve to 9-21 overall plus 6-12 at home. Caleb Smith was stellar on the mound as he gave up one earned run on four hits with eight strikeouts and two walks over seven innings to earn the win. The Marlins took a 3-1 lead with two runs in the bottom of the fourth and then added an insurance run in the sixth. Rosell Herrera helped pace the Miami offense by going 2-for-4 with a double and three RBIs. Miguel Rojas went 2-for-4 with a run. Brian Anderson was 2-for-4 with an RBI, while Jorge Alfaro finished 1-for-3 with two runs. Jose Urena will start today for the Marlins as he comes in with a 1-4 record, 5.08 ERA and 1.54 WHIP along with 25 strikeouts over 33 2/3 innings.

MLB Betting Trends

Atlanta

The Braves are 1-5 in their last six during game one of a series. Atlanta is 10-3 in the last 13 meetings.

Miami

The Marlins are 0-5 in the last five Urena starts versus the Braves. Miami is 1-5 in the last six Urena starts overall.

Prediction:

Gausman is pitching better than the numbers indicate, but just needs to avoid the big inning. He should find an easier time doing that against a weak Marlins offense in a pitcher's park. Atlanta has to put something together against a poor opponent if it hopes to be a division contender this season. While there is a whole lot of season left, the Braves can't afford to fall too far below .500. Look for a strong start by Atlanta this series.
