The TPC Sawgrass is designed by Pete Dye, one of the most recognizable and well-known courses on the tour. The unofficial fifth major will feature an elite feature the game's greatest players vying for one of the PGA's most prestigious title. Tiger Woods is the favorite despite struggling at this event. He finished 40th here last year and has just one top-10 since his win in 2001.
Lefty was on target to win last week at Quail Hollow but finished third after bogeying two of the last three holes to miss a playoff by a shot. Mickelson has made 11 straight cuts with a win in 2007 and has six top-25's. According to oddsmakers from online sports book Bovada.lv, Mickelson is currently 22-1 to win THE PLAYERS Championship.
Luke Donald has never won this tournament so it might be time. The Englishman has three top-six finishes over the past seven years. Donald's last victory came at the European Tour's top even, the BMW Championship. He's playing well, coming off a T3 at the Heritage, which was his second top-5 in his last three starts. He's played in six tournaments on the PGA Tour this season and has been in the top 25 in six of them.
Longshot:
Van Pelt has three top-10's at TPC Sawgrass. He's coming off his first top-10 this year and hasn't quite broken through this year. The Oklahoma native is great ball striker and it's just a matter of time for him to start winning. He has a record of playing well in similar courses. He sits 4th in the Pete Dye course stroke averages.
