Sanchez carries no-hitter into eighth
Anibal Sanchez had a no-hitter into the eighth inning Friday night as Washington won Game 1 of the NLCS by a count of 2-0. Sanchez picked up the win as he allowed one hit with five strikeouts and one walk over 7 2/3 innings pitched. Sean Doolittle notched the save as he threw 1 1/3 innings of flawless baseball with one strikeout. Howie Kendrick helped pace the Nationals offense as he went 2-for-4 with a double, a walk, a run scored and an RBI. Yan Gomes ended the contest 2-for-3 with a double, a walk and an RBI. Ryan Zimmerman was 2-for-4 with a double and a walk. Max Scherzer takes the mound today after giving up one earned run on four hits with seven strikeouts and three walks over seven innings in a Game 4 6-1 win over Los Angeles in the NLDS.
Cardinals stumble in Game 1
St. Louis could not get the bats going Friday night at home as it lost 2-0 to Washington in Game 1 of the NLCS. Jose Martinez had the lone hit for the Cardinals with a pinch-hit single in the eighth inning. Kolten Wong went 0-for-3 plus a walk and a stolen base. Randy Arozarena was hit by a pitch as a pinch hitter and stole a base. Miles Mikolas took the loss as he allowed one earned run on seven hits with seven strikeouts and two walks over six innings. Adam Wainwright will start today for St. Louis after throwing 7 2/3 innings of shutout baseball with four hits allowed, eight strikeouts and two walks in a 3-1 home loss against Atlanta in Game 3 of the NLDS.
MLB Betting Trends
Washington
The Nationals are 9-1 in their last 10 games versus a right-handed starter. Washington is 14-3 in the last 17 Scherzer starts.
St. Louis
The Cardinals are 4-9 in their last 13 playoff games. St. Louis is 50-23 in the last 73 Wainwright home starts.
Prediction:
Scherzer is nasty as we know, but he did struggle earlier this season in a start at the Cardinals. With Wainwright in a groove his last start and also a veteran with plenty of playoff experience, I'm going to side with the hosts to even the series today. If the Cardinals can hit a home run or two off Scherzer, Wainwright is good enough to hold onto that lead before giving way to the bullpen. With how good St. Louis has been at home this season, I have no issues taking a shot at plus money here.
