Cardinals’ Gant allows two runs in loss to Brewers
John Gant yielded two runs on six hits over 4 1/3 innings in a loss against the Brewers on Sunday. Gant recorded only one strikeout and also walked a pair of batters. A two-run double off the bat of Mike Moustakas accounted for the only damage against the right-hander, but the Cardinals offense failed to provide any run support to get him off the hook for the loss. The 26-year-old right-hander is 5-5 with a 3.76 ERA, 1.23 WHIP and 66/33 K/BB ratio in 19 appearances (12 starts) this season. Despite his recent success, he’s not a recommended streaming option in his next start against the Rockies in Coors Field on Saturday.
Rockies’ Marquez fires seven solid innings of work vs. Braves
German Marquez allowed two runs on five hits over seven innings of work in a win over the Braves on Sunday. Marquez whiffed five batters and only issued one walk. He also hit a batter and threw a wild pitch. The 23-year-old righty gave up only one extra-base hit and needed just 93 pitches to fire seven stellar frames. He's allowed three runs or fewer in eight of nine starts since June 30. With the win, Marquez improves to 11-9 with a 4.42 ERA, 1.32 WHIP and 151/48 K/BB ratio in 25 starts this year. He’ll face the Cardinals at home in his next start on Saturday.
