CFB WEEK 1 GOW!!

Michigan State -22

While this Western Michigan team was impressive, they were impressive against MAC competition, and Michigan State has won and covered 5 straight games at home & 5 of the L6 as an F. Now they take on the 2nd best team in the state and 14th ranked team in the county in Michigan State. While the Spartans lost the B10’s leading rusher Kenneth Walker, they have found a way to replace him with high potential, adding Jarek Broussard from Colorado in the transfer portal, filling the glaring hole in the offense. This team was 11-2 last season for a reason, and even though there are only 5 returning starters on offense, one of those includes their starting QB and 2 of their top 3 receivers.

Their offense was more impressive than their defense last year, but this season, there is a veteran presence on defense with 9 returning starters, including 7 of their top 8 tacklers! While they were the worst team against the pass in the B10 last season, this year, all 4 players in their secondary are coming off a season with double-digit starts.

Mel Tucker is 4-0 against the spread vs. non-conference teams as the coach of Michigan State, and the team has won 12 straight games against the Broncos.

CFB | HOUSTON @ UTSA | 09/03 | 3:30 PM EDT
HOUSTON -195
ANALYSIS: I think Houston might be the best Group of 5 school this season and could run the table like Cincinnati did last year and crash the College Football Playoff before heading to the Big 12 (along with Cincy, UCF and BYU). QB Clayton Tune and star wideout Nathaniel Dell return. UTSA is no joke and could win Conference USA again but has to replace All-American running back Sincere McCormick. I remember I wanted the Bears to draft that guy late (kinda just wanted a jersey that said Sincere on the back; figured be a hit with the ladies. The one I have that says Insincere doesn't really work as well), but he went undrafted and signed with the Raiders.

CFB | CINCINNATI @ ARKANSAS | 09/03 | 3:30 PM EDT
ARKANSAS -235
ANALYSIS: I think the Bearcats will take a pretty big step back -- although playing in the AAC may only lose 2-3 games total -- after losing quarterback Desmond Ridder, the two-time AAC Player of the Year, leading rusher Jerome Ford and seven starters off the defense. The Woo Pie Sooies lost star wideout Treylon Burks but added Oklahoma transfer Jaden Haselwood and QB KJ Jefferson is back. The offensive line should be one of the SEC's best. I suppose this could be like a 3-point win or something but I'm just going to take the points out of play.

CFB | TEXAS ST. @ NEVADA | 09/03 | 5:30 PM EDT
NEVADA PK
ANALYSIS: This has dropped today from Nevada -3.5 to a pick'em, and I'm honestly not sure why when the game is in Reno. The Wolf Pack didn't look all that great in their season-opening win over New Mexico State but having a game under their belts is an advantage -- and Nevada is a better program overall. Texas State is a lower-tier Sun Belt team that was 4-8 last year and allowed 33.0 points per game. That defense lost one of its best players and leaders when cornerback Zion Childress transferred to Kentucky.

CFB | NOTRE DAME @ OHIO ST. | 09/03 | 7:30 PM EDT
NOTRE DAME +17.5
ANALYSIS: Notre Dame could close as the biggest AP Top 5 underdog this century; the previous high was actually the Irish +18.5 against Alabama in the Rose Bowl semifinal after the 2020 season, and Notre Dame stayed within 17 points there. I think the same happens Saturday even though Ohio State is going to be wicked good offensively. The Irish should be able to run the ball and complete short passes to stud tight end Michael Mayer to get first downs and chew clock.

CFB | UTAH ST. @ ALABAMA | 09/03 | 7:30 PM EDT
UTAH ST. +41.5
ANALYSIS: Alabama usually pounds teams in season openers, but Utah State is not bad and has a game under its belt after rallying past UConn in Week Zero. Logan Bonner is one of the best quarterbacks in the Mountain West, and USU is well coached by Blake Anderson. There's also the chance the Tide are peeking ahead to Week 2 and a trip to Texas. This number simply feels about a touchdown too high. It opened at -31. Preseason All-SEC tight end Cameron Latu may not play for Bama. Latu set a school record for receiving touchdowns by a tight end last season with eight but missed all of preseason camp due to injury.

CFB | GEORGIA ST. @ SOUTH CAROLINA | 09/03 | 7:30 PM EDT
GEORGIA ST. +12.5
ANALYSIS: The hope for South Carolina is that QB Spencer Rattler can regain that spark he had a few seasons ago at Oklahoma. What should be the more pressing matter is whether the Gamecocks are ready for the physical, point-of-attack style of play Georgia State brings to the table. Also, Panthers QB Darren Grainger is the more consistent of the two signal-callers in this matchup.

CFB | UTAH @ FLORIDA | 09/03 | 7:00 PM EDT
FLORIDA +2.5
ANALYSIS: This will be one of the more physical games on this week's schedule. Florida is being underestimated, and that has a lot to do with the unknown surrounding new coach Billy Napier. However, Napier is grounded in his power football philosophy, and the Gators have a special player at QB in Anthony Richardson. To me, he'll be the difference in this contest.

CFB | ARIZONA @ SAN DIEGO ST. | 09/03 | 3:30 PM EDT
SAN DIEGO ST. -6
ANALYSIS: The Aztecs defeated Arizona 38-14 as one-point road dogs last season. San Diego State out-gained Arizona 454-230. Arizona has a long way to go after winning just one game last season. The Wildcats' offensive line is ranked No. 12 in the Pac 12, and their defensive line is ranked No. 10. The Aztecs' offensive line is ranked No. 2 in the Mountain West, and their defensive line is ranked No. 2 heading into this opener. The Aztecs will be playing in a brand new home stadium. The new grass field should benefit San Diego State. The Aztecs are 10-5 straight-up and 9-6 against-the-spread on a grass field. Arizona plays mostly on turf. They are 0-5 SU and 2-3 ATS playing on a grass field over the past three years. Take the home team!

CFB | NORTH CAROLINA @ APP. ST. | 09/03 | 12:00 PM EDT
OVER 55.5
ANALYSIS: There were two major takeaways from North Carolina's win against Florida A&M in Week Zero, both which play into taking the over in Saturday's game in Boone. First, redshirt freshman quarterback Drake Maye looks the part of his blue chip recruiting projections and his five touchdown performance suggests the Tar Heels' offense will be just fine in the post-Sam Howell era. Second, the defense has not seen the kind of immediate improvement some hoped with the arrival of Gene Chizik as DC. FAMU was able to move the ball effectively, so I absolutely believe App State will do so as well. Whoever executes better in the red zone will win what I think is going to be a close game, but no matter the straight up result we should see enough points to hit the over.

CFB | OREGON @ GEORGIA | 09/03 | 3:30 PM EDT
GEORGIA -17.5
ANALYSIS: Oregon has enough top-end talent to create some highlights, but I'm concerned about how the Ducks will hold up over 60 minutes in Atlanta against the reigning champs. Georgia might take a slight step back defensively, but it's from "historically great" to "one of the best units in the country" and I just don't think Oregon's personnel is suited to score on the Bulldogs like they did against Ohio State in Columbus last year. If Oregon covers it's because they've kept the game low-scoring, which might work for a half but I don't think it's sustainable when Georgia has a significant edge in competitive depth.

CFB | UTAH @ FLORIDA | 09/03 | 7:00 PM EDT
FLORIDA +2.5
ANALYSIS: The Utes have shown they can win in difficult road and neutral-site venues, and expectations are high for the Pac-12 champions who return 17 starters. But Utah also has been prone to early struggles and late success. It lost two of three last year before winning nine of 10 down the stretch. The Gators, rebuilding following a six-win campaign, will be desperate to get off to a promising start under new coach Billy Napier and dual-threat QB Anthony Richardson leads a club with plenty of firepower. Take the value on the Gators.

CFB | BOWLING GREEN @ UCLA | 09/03 | 2:30 PM EDT
UCLA -24.5
ANALYSIS: USC has received all of the love in the Pac-12, and you know UCLA coach Chip Kelly has heard all of it. He will want to come out and make a statement against one of the worst teams in college football, and has the weapons to do it. Quarterback Dorian Thompson-Robinson is as dynamic as they get, running back Zach Charbonnet is a future NFL stud and the defensive line is one of the best in the conference. Kelly will run up the score in a BIG way.

CFB | UTAH @ FLORIDA | 09/03 | 7:00 PM EDT
UNDER 51
ANALYSIS: Utah wants to win the battle at the line of scrimmage, and will accomplish that goal on Saturday night. The Utes won't get too creative offensively and force Gators coach Billy Napier into some uncomfortable situations with quarterback Anthony Richardson. This will be an old-school slugfest, and might get a little sloppy. Bottom line: it SCREAMS Under.

CFB | OREGON @ GEORGIA | 09/03 | 3:30 PM EDT
UNDER 52.5
ANALYSIS: This one boils down to two things -- Georgia's defense won't take a big step back and Oregon quarterback Bo Nix is a liability. The mass exodus in Athens was a big story during the NFL Draft, but coach Kirby Smart is just fine with Jalen Carter up front, Nolan Smith at linebacker and an ultra-talented secondary. Nix completed 56.4% of his passes, only threw on touchdown and was picked twice in three games vs. Georgia when he was at Auburn. Is that going to change? Nope. Georgia will jump out to a lead and then deflate the football for an easy Under.

CFB | NC STATE @ EAST CAROLINA | 09/03 | 12:00 PM EDT
OVER 51.5
ANALYSIS: We received a college football Week 1 betting report from Caesars Sportsbook and even their lead trader for the sport was surprised this total has plummeted from an open of 58.5 and through a few very key numbers. He speculated weather reasons, but now things look just fine in Greenville at least during the day Saturday. East Carolina is never a good defensive team but usually can score and that should be the case again in 2022 with QB Holton Ahlers, whom I think has been starting for the Pirates since 2008, and several starters back on that side of the ball. I expect NC State to put up at least 35 points here behind star QB Devin Leary, so we only need 17 from ECU for this Over.

Jerry Palm

CFB | ARMY @ C. CAROLINA | 09/03 | 7:00 PM EDT
UNDER 53.5
ANALYSIS: My colleague Tom Fornelli jumps on the under every time two military academies play because both teams run the ball almost exclusively, which makes the games shorter and keeps scores down. It’s a tried and true winner. Coastal Carolina doesn’t run the ball quite that much as a service academy, but the Chanticleers do run it a lot. They were sixth in rushing yardage last season. Expect a quick game and one that stays under the line.

CFB | BYU @ SOUTH FLORIDA | 09/03 | 4:00 PM EDT
BYU -11.5
ANALYSIS: BYU is returning 19 starters, including its entire defense, from a team that went 10-3 last season. The schedule is not quite as favorable this year, but the Cougars are hoping to build some momentum in their final season as an Independent. USF is still trying to build its program back up under coach Jeff Scott, who has won just three games in his first two seasons. This season may be better, but this game will probably not go well.

CFB | BOWLING GREEN @ UCLA | 09/03 | 2:30 PM EDT
UCLA -23.5
ANALYSIS: The Bruins may have some first game slop, as a lot of teams do, but they have chosen a good opponent to muddle through that against. Bowling Green is making the three time zone road trip to collect a paycheck, but they will pay for it on the field. The Falcons are likely to spend much of the season in Tom Fornelli's Bottom 25 and should be no match for UCLA under any circumstance.
__________________

Josh Nagel

CFB | CLEMSON @ GEORGIA TECH | 09/05 | 8:00 PM EDT
GEORGIA TECH +23
ANALYSIS: Clemson used to cover such massive numbers with relative ease, but all that changed last year, when its struggles on offense led to just two ACC victories by double figures. One of its many close conference battles was a 14-8 win over a stubborn Georgia Tech club. Quarterback DJ Uiagalelei experienced a sophomore slump, but the Tigers should show improved offensive production. The question is whether the Yellow Jackets can produce enough offense against Clemson's air-tight defense. Quarterback Jeff Sims is a dynamic playmaker but they might not have much to go with him. Even so, if Tech reaches double figures it should cover, and expect the Jackets to have some fight in this national showcase game.

CFB | LIBERTY @ SO. MISS | 09/03 | 7:00 PM EDT
LIBERTY -3.5
ANALYSIS: Quarterback Charlie Brewer somehow didn't work out at Utah, but he was consistently solid while at Baylor and is a great one-year heir apparent to Malik Willis at Liberty. Southern Miss returns a decent chunk of experience from last year's three-win club and Hattiesburg is a difficult place to play, especially at night. But the Eagles will likely improve as the season wears on. In Saturday's opener, look for Liberty's up-tempo offense led by Brewer to allow the Flames to create some separation.

CFB | OREGON @ GEORGIA | 09/03 | 3:30 PM EDT
OREGON +17.5
ANALYSIS: Oregon starts a new era Saturday under coach Dan Lanning. His experience as the former defensive coordinator with the Bulldogs has to provide something of an edge to the Ducks' preparation efforts. Projected starting QB Bo Nix never beat Georgia while he was the signal-caller at Auburn but he gave the Bulldogs some headaches. Pretty much the entire starting defense for Georgia's national-title team was drafted and preparing to play on Sundays, though the Bulldogs still have plenty of leftover talent. Even so, Oregon has been good in these showcase spots. The Ducks stunned the college football world last year by soundly beating Ohio State on the road as a more than two-touchdown underdog. Even though its historically finesse ways are a concern, expect the Ducks to remain respectable.

CFB | BOISE ST. @ OREGON ST. | 09/03 | 10:30 PM EDT
BOISE ST. +2.5
ANALYSIS: The Broncos return 17 starters from a squad that went 7-5 while defeating two ranked teams last season. Boise State outscored its opponents by 10.2 points per game. I see more improvements in year two under Andy Avalos. The Beavers should get better as the season plays out. Oregon State coach Jonathan Smith is 0-4 both straight-up and against-the-spread in openers. Boise State is 32-16 ATS as an underdog since 1993. I'm taking the road dog.
