SB50 MVP Odds: How to spot value
Cam Newton is favored to win MVP of Super Bowl 50 but who are the other nine players with the best odds to take home the honors on Sunday?
Oddsmakers from online sports book Bovada.lv currently list Newton as a -130 favorite to win Super Bowl 50 MVP. The Panthers quarterback opened as the favorite and will likely close as the favorite when Super Bowl 50 kicks off at 6:30PM ET on Sunday. Below is a list of the 10 players with the best odds to win the Super Bowl 50 MVP award.
1. Cam Newton -130
2. Peyton Manning +275
3. Luke Kuechly 14/1
4. Ted Ginn Jr. 20/1
5. C.J. Anderson 20/1
6. Von Miller 20/1
7. Greg Olsen 22/1
8. Jonathan Stewart 22/1
9. Demaryius Thomas 22/1
10. Emmanuel Sanders 22/1
The quarterback position has taken home the MVP award 27 times in Super Bowl history, but there's not much value for bettors in taking Newton seeing as how he's the favorite and you have to lay more money to win less. There is some value in taking Manning at +275, especially with Sunday potentially being the final game of his career. But the expectation is that Manning will continue to be a "game manager" for Denver's offense, which could limit his impact.
So where is there value? Look at the running backs and receivers. The last time a running back was named MVP of the Super Bowl was Terrell Davis in 1998, but both the Panthers and Broncos will rely heavily on their rushing attacks on Sunday. Thus, Stewart at 22/1 or Anderson at 20/1 does represent some value. If either of them can reach paydirt multiple times, their odds of winning the MVP go up.
A wide receiver has also taken home the Super Bowl 50 award three times since 2005 (Deion Branch in 2005, Hines Ward in 2006, Santonio Holmes in 2009). Ginn is a big-play threat in Carolina's offense so there's value in him at 20/1. The same case can be made for Sanders and Olsen at 22/1, respectively. Sanders is a vertical threat for Denver and Olsen will be targeted plenty in Carolina's offense.
