Rays' Stankey strikes out two in perfect inning vs. Astros
Ryne Stanek struck out two in a perfect first inning of work while serving as the Rays' opener in Saturday's win over the Astros. Stanek struck out George Springer and induced a pop out from Alex Bregman to begin his inning of work. Jose Altuve then struck for a single, but the 26-year-old right-hander would not allow further escalation of the offensive threat, retiring Evan Gattis via strikeout to finish the inning and get the Rays started on the right track before ceding way to his bullpen brethren for the rest of the contest. While the team's decision to utilize a reliever as "opener" is forward-thinking enough, it's a pure zero for fantasy purposes. That's not a knock on Stanek himself, who has pitched to a respectable 1.78 ERA, 0.95 WHIP and 30/13 K/BB ratio in 25 1/3 innings this season.
Orioles' Gausman shelled in loss vs. Red Sox
Kevin Gausman allowed five runs on three hits over 4 2/3 innings in a loss to the Red Sox on Monday. With the exception of a Mitch Moreland solo shot in the second inning, Gausman was cruising early, until the wheels came off in the fifth inning. After allowing a leadoff double to Xander Bogaerts, Gausman walked three consecutive batters to bring home a run, and then surrendered a back-breaking two-run, ground-rule double to Andrew Benintendi. The mercurial right-hander has showcased pinpoint control, posting a 99/30 K/BB ratio in 117 innings, but has allowed 20 home runs, and remains underwhelming in terms of run prevention this season. Gausman is 4-8 with a 4.54 ERA in 20 starts. He will face the Rays at home this weekend.
