Padres avoid sweep at Cubs
San Diego earned a 5-1 win at Chicago Sunday afternoon to salvage a game in the three-game series. Francisco Mejia helped lead the Padres offense as he finished 2-for-3 with a solo home run, a walk and two runs scored. Fernando Tatis Jr. went 2-for-4 with a walk and three RBIs. Hunter Renfroe was 1-for-3 with a double, a walk and a run. Cal Quantrill picked up the win as the bulk starter as he gave up two hits with six strikeouts and no walks over 5 2/3 scoreless innings. Chris Paddack draws the start tonight as he enters with a 6-4 record, 2.70 ERA and 0.87 WHIP with 95 strikeouts over 90 innings.
Mets fall in 12 innings
New York lost by a count of 3-2 in 12 innings Sunday afternoon in its series finale at San Francisco. J.D. Davis helped pace the offense as he went 2-for-5 with a double. Amed Rosario finished 1-for-4 with a solo home run and a walk. Michael Conforto was 1-for-5 with a solo homer. Robert Gsellman took the loss in relief as he gave up one earned run on one hit with no strikeouts or walks over 1 1/3 innings. Jason Vargas will start tonight for the Mets as he comes in with a 4-5 record, 4.25 ERA and 1.28 WHIP with 68 strikeouts over 82 2/3 innings.
MLB Betting Trends
San Diego
The Padres are 2-7 in their last nine games overall. San Diego is 0-5 in its last five series openers.
New York
The Mets are 4-1 in their last five Tuesday games. New York is 3-7 in the last 10 Vargas Tuesday starts.
Prediction:
Paddack has been awesome his last two starts, both on the road, and for much of the season in general. While San Diego is going to limit his innings over the next couple months, that won't be an issue here and he's likely to have a lot of success again versus a Mets squad he threw 7 2/3 innings of shutout baseball with 11 strikeouts against back in May. Vargas is typically efficient, but I don't think he's up to the task of keeping up with Paddack today. Additionally, the Padres have the more trusted bullpen.
