Which American will find their way around Royal Birkdale the best and be the top finisher in The Open Championship?
According to oddsmakers at Bovada.lv, Dustin Johnson, Jordan Spieth and Rickie Fowler are all co-favorites to be the top American with 11/2 odds. Both Brooks Koepka and Phil Mickelson have 12/1 odds. The Open Championship takes place Thursday-Sunday from Royal Birkdale in Southport, England.
Johnson is the top-ranked golfer in the world, but he is in a funk. Johnson has missed the cut in his last two tournaments and has finished outside the top 10 in four straight events. He has three wins in 2017 with seven top-10 finishes. Johnson has three top-10 finishes in eight Open Championship appearances and he holds one major victory in his career.
Spieth is third in the world rankings. He is coming off a win in the Travelers Championship, his second win in 2017. He has a total of six top-10 finishes this year. Spieth has played in this event four times and has one top-5 finish. Spieth holds a total of two major victories in his career.
Fowler is 10th in the world rankings. He has finished in the top 10 in four of his last five tournaments and he has one win in 2017 with a total of seven top-10 finishes this year. Fowler has never won a major, but he has finished in the top-5 of this event twice in his career.
Koepka is 11th in the world rankings and coming off his first major victory, the U.S. Open. He has three top-10 finishes this year with four missed cuts in 14 tournaments. Koepka has played in The Open Championship three times, finishing 10th in 2015 while missing the cut in 2013 and finishing 67th in 2014.
Mickelson was the 2013 winner of this event and he has finished second two other times, including in 2016. Lefty is winless this year with three top-10 finishes in 15 tournaments. He has yet to miss a cut in any event he has played in.
