Weekly Bankroll Builder: May 1 Oaklawn Park Late Pk5 play

April 29, 2020 | By Brian Nadeau

Weekly Bankroll Builder: May 1 Oaklawn Park Late Pk5 play

With the Stronach 5 on hiatus for the time being, and Oaklawn Park’s Closing Week ripe with stakes and full fields, let’s take a look at their late Pk5 Friday, fresh off a modest score of $191.90 on a $5 investment in last week’s late Pk4 at Gulfstream Park. And, since is the biggest racing weekend in a month, and the last at one of the two majors tracks still running for at least a few weeks, I’ll expand the bankroll a bit (while also offering a budget ticket as well).

Please take note that this analysis is done upwards of 48 hours in advance, so obviously weather, track conditions and especially late scratches can and will have an effect. Please check back around 4pm Friday for an update, as well as on Twitter.

Race 6 (4:36 ET): 3yo MSW at 6 furlongs

We start out what looks like a very tough sequence with a race that I think (hope) will play to form, as the two expected favorites—#10 ONAWAY (5-2) and #12 INIS GLUAIRE (3-1)—look better than what looks to be a modest bunch, or a few talented firsters who might need a run, or a bit farther, to shine. Obviously ‘On will be tough off a solid 4th on debut for Cox, especially since the first three finishers all came back to win, and he figures to break a lot better today as well, after breaking last. However, I can’t imagine they paid 825k for ‘Inis without loving what they saw, or not expecting a quick return on investment, and with Asmussen 16% with firsters, and a pair of sharp 5F works on display, he might run to that price tag here.

Pk4 A horses: 10,12 (listed in order of preference)

I’d probably try and get #1 FAST CASH (6-1) on the top line off a useful debut, but the rail in a big field is a concern, so he’ll be relegated to the second level, though I’ll elevate him if one of the top-2 scratch out.

Pk4 B horses: 1

Potential B add ins: #11 Vasariano (10-1), #6 Silardi (10-1), #9 Super Constitution (8-1), #7 Mundacious (12-1)

Race 7: 3up Arkansas-bred Arkansas Breeders’ Championship at 1 1/16 miles

Last year’s runner-up #3 K J’S NOBILITY (5-2) is back to try and one better that run this year, and, judging by two straight easy wins, he’s going to be tough, but they were also at one-turn, so he’s far from a lock either and you’re allowed to look for better price alternatives. I’m going to take a shot on top with #9 BANDIT POINT (10-1), who should get a lot of pace to rally into, and that close 5th in an open two-turn allowance last time gives him an upset chance here. The tactical speed #11 MAN IN THE CAN (6-1) showed in his sprints should set up for a good trip here off all the speed, and he’s got more upside than the rest of these combined, so while he’s not really bred for this trip, he still seems a must-use to me. I’ll use another big price with #6 J.E.’S HANDMEDOWN (15-1), who looks much better routing, wasn’t far behind ‘K J’s in this last year, and is another who will like what looks to be a very energetic pace.

Pk4 A horses: 9,3,11,6

As you can probably tell by now, I’m against the sloppy 3/19 state-bred allowance #4 HAMAZING VISION (9-2) and #1 PROMISING SHOES (5-1) ran 1-2 in, since their fast track from isn’t as sharp, and their runs were far and away better than anything else they’ve done in a while, though they still need to be used as a backup on expansive tickets.

Pk4 B horses: 4,1

Potential B add ins: #8 Prospector Fever (8-1)

Race 8: 3yof Gardenia at 1 1/16 miles

This is my deep spread, as I have no strong convictions about a group that predominantly look all the same on paper in a race that has the “Use one of use them all” feel to it. So, here goes: #9 ICE PRINCESS (10-1), #5 DAPHNE MOON (9-2), #7 STRONG FLAG (9-2), #10 ANTOINETTE (8-1), #2 PIECE OF MY HEART (8-1), #3 GINGHAM (3-1), and #8 COMICAL (15-1). A few asides; I guess Gingham is favored because she’s trained by Baffert (?), but you can make a case she’s no better than anyone here, as her claim to fame was a slow and distant 2nd in an SA GII last time; Piece of My Heart may bounce off her big figure win last time, but is also the most likely winner here if she moves forward off it; Ice Princess is also entered in the Fantasy, but regardless of where she runs, the fact Gargan decided to ship her here is noteworthy.

Pk4 A horses: 9,5,7,10,2,3,8

With seven on the top line, I don’t deserve to make it through if I don’t have the winner somewhere up there, so there will be no backups.

Pk4 B horses: NONE

Potential B add ins: #6 Quick Decision (12-1), #His Glory (8-1)
Race 9: 3yof Fantasy at 1 1/16 miles

If you’re on a budget (see that ticket below), you can single #2 VENETIAN HARBOR (2-1), since she looks to be the controlling speed, drew perfectly, and has run extremely fast in her last two, while facing a group of gals who haven’t yet checked that box. With that being said, since I’ve expanded the budget here, I’m going to get a little cheeky and use #5 HARVEYS LIL GOIL (12-1) as well, since she’s been nothing short of awesome in her two dirt runs in New York—albeit against tons easier—and off just three starts, she still has a world of upside as well.

Pk4 A horses: 2,5

I’ve never quite come around to champion #10 BRITISH IDIUM (5-2), as she beat a bad field in slow time in the GI Alcibiades at Kee, then was fortunate (in my opinion) to beat Donna Veloce in the BC Juvenile Fillies. Those sentiments were further strengthened when she was a very flat 2nd in her seasonal bow in the GII Rachel Alexandra at FG, and while fans will say Cox had no reason to crank her and she can move forward here, detractors can also say race winner Finite returned and ran off the board at odds-on in a short field in the GII FG Oaks. Point being, I’ll use her, but she can beat me on any my serious tickets.

Pk4 B horses: 10

Potential B add ins: #7 Shedaresthedevil (12-1), #4 Lake Avenue (15-1), #3 Swiss Skydiver (6-1)

Race 10: 3upfm AOC (40k/N2X) at 6 furlongs

Two of the three horses to beat—#6 SPEND SPEND SPEND (7-2) and #8 LA CHANCLA (4-1)—enter off late August and late September layoffs, respectively, so they are question marks, which make this finale that much tougher to solve. I’ll use them both, especially since the former might be a Lone F and the latter is first-time Asmussen (19%), but they are a bit further down the list. My top pick is #10 UNION FACTOR (12-1), who cuts back off a well-beaten 5th in a fast route last time but was a very good 2nd sprinting two-back, and should have plenty of foundation off that two-turn run, and has enough tactical speed to trip out here too. It’s also worth nothing he beat favored #7 WHOLEHEARTED (5-2) in that sprint run, and this runner returned to win a small stakes at WRD, and has been rock solid off the Diordoro claim.

Pk4 A horses: 10,7,6,8 (listed in order of preference)

I’m banking on the top-4 getting it done, as they just look a cut above the rest here, so I’ll have no backups in the closing leg.

Pk4 B horses: NONE

Potential B add ins: #4 Full of Grace (8-1), #1 Miss Imperial (4-1) #3 Sara Sea (15-1)

The suggested tickets:

Main Ticket: 10,12 with 9,3,11,6 with 9,5,7,10,2,3,8 with 2,5 with 10,7,6,8 = $224
Race 6 B backup: 1 with 9,3,11,6 with 9,5,7,10,2,3,8 with 2,5 with 10,7,6,8 = $96
Race 7 B Backup: 10,12 with 4,1 with 9,5,7,10,2,3,8 with 2,5 with 10,7,6,8 = $96
Race 9 B Backup: 10,12 with 9,3,11,6 with 9,5,7,10,2,3,8 with 10 with 10,7,6,8 = $96
To limit the price of the backup tickets you can single #2 Venetian Harbor in R9

All A Budget Ticket: 10,12 with 9,3,11 with 9,5,7,10,2,3,8 with 2 with 10,7,6,8 = $84

Brian Nadeau's Daily Picks

Oaklawn Park - Race #7
Picks Notes
#9 Bandit Pandit Price player stretched back out and was a close 5th in an open allowance last time, was a close 3rd in this last year, and should trip out of an abundance of speed; upset special.
#3 K J's Nobility The chalk has won two straight sprinting but can route, as he was 2nd and ahead of the pick last year, but his margin for error is slim, yet he'll be very overbet; scary, but no lock.
#11 Man in the Can Stretch out sprinter enters off a state-bred stakes win, is tactical enough to lay just off the speed, and has a world of upside off just three starts; may be able to jump this hurdle.
Race Summary The price will be right on the 9, who really is no worse than several here who will be bet harder, and the return to the route sure worked for him last time, so give him a look in all the slots, and especially the late Pk5 (see my blog post for suggested tickets), and to kick off the late Pk4 as well, since he may fall completely through the wagering cracks, even though he's barely a cut below the top contenders, if at all.

Oaklawn Park - Race #8
Picks Notes
#9 Ice Princess NY invader has some sharp NYB form for Gargan, who is having a monster year, and while this is a step up in class, note she was hardly embarrassed when 4th in the G Frizette at Belmont last year, it's unlikely this patient barn would ship 1,300 miles just for the hot springs; call in a real scramble.
#5 Daphne Moon Major player for Jeremiah looked good winning a track and distance AOC last time in her 3yo bow, and she showed she can win at two turns too, so with that behind her, a good draw, and a style that should have her just off the speed off the far turn, she's got a huge chance; not just for Frasier fans.
#7 Strong Flag Lightly raced miss seems to be coming to hand for Asmussen, as she was a good 2nd to fellow rival Piece of My Heart in a fast AOC her last time in her first against winners, and she's another with the right style to sit off the pace and make a run, at what should be a price too; contention runs deep.
Race Summary The toughest race of the late Pk5 sequence (see my blog post for suggested tickets) could go any number of ways, and has a very sketchy (and unmentioned favorite) in #3 Gingham, so this looks like a great time to go price shopping, and the 9 certainly fits the bill, as she may get overlooked off her three NYB romps, but they fit nicely on paper with this group, and she goes for an ace barn, so give her a look in all the slots, and especially the aforementioned late Pk5, and late Pk4 as well, as this is a tough, tough puzzle, and a win in the $20 range would go a long way to blowing both sequences up.

Oaklawn Park - Race #9
Picks Notes
#2 Venetian Harbor Santa Anita invader aired in very fast time in the GII Las Virgines, her second straight facile romp, meets a modest cast of Midwest gals, and looks like a Lone F too; long gone.
#5 Harvey's Lil Goil Aqueduct filly has won for fun in both dirt starts and now gets the acid test, and while she's a cut below the pick right now, she can rally late for a big chunk; can spice up your EX.
#10 British Idiom Reigning 2yo filly champ was workmanlike last year, and her return when a distant 2nd in the FG GII wasn't much, so she needs to improve to make a big dent here; mixed signals.
Race Summary Clearly you won't get rich on the 2, as that 2-1 ML might be 6-5 by post, but she simply looks much, much better than a relatively average bunch here, so play her aggressively to win at 8-5 or better, and you can use a price like the 5 underneath in the vertical exotics while trying to get the 10 out of the picture, but her real value comes in the late Pk5 (see my blog post for suggested tickets), and late Pk4 as well, since she can be keyed or singled, which will allow for more coverage in the deeper surrounding legs, as she seems to have this field over a barrel.

Brian W. Spencer's Daily Picks

Tampa Bay Downs - Race #5
Picks Notes
#9 K's Funhouse Has a right to be tough while running for a tag for the first time, and he should get a really good trip near the top on the stretchout.
#1 Valuable Pillow Gets some slight relief for this one and has enough pace to find a spot from the fence. Prefer him underneath only.
#4 Tinker's Pal Has been up the track in all three starts, but he flashed a little bit of pace before stopping last out, and he'll return with Lasix for the first time. Wouldn't be a surprise to see him move way up here at a big price.
Race Summary K's Funhouse has a right to be tough while dipping in for a price, and she has the pedigree to see out this mile turf trip.

Tampa Bay Downs - Race #7
Picks Notes
#8 Better Yet In a spot where several of them have recent running lines that would be good enough to win, I wouldn't want too short a price. This filly doesn't have a super-high ceiling, but she tends to be pretty reliable and won at this level back in February.
#6 Barrel of Destiny Found the right fit when dropping to this level for a win last out, and she can get another good trip from close range. The one to beat right back, but she definitely doesn't have to win this.
#5 Colonels Daughter Finisher cuts back off an 11f try, and she should be a good fit with this kind of company given her recent form. Chance.
Race Summary Better Yet is a price alternative who figures to get overlooked here. Her form isn't flashy, but it holds up pretty well on paper with this bunch, and she'll be a better number than a couple of horses who look pretty similar.

Tampa Bay Downs - Race #8
Picks Notes
#1 Agi's Cait Ran a really nice one last time out and now returns with blinkers. She's got the pace to be in touch in the early going, and she'll offer a fair price on the tote.
#8 Connectivity Her best stuff would handle these, but she'll have to fire out of a new barn and over a turf course she's never tried. Most likely winner might be overbet.
#10 Flighty Almighty Think the tote will tell much of the story here as to whether or not this one is live for this first North American start, but she also might want to go a bit longer than this.
Race Summary Agi's Cait's last race was pretty solid behind a good-looking winner, and the addition of blinkers might be enough to push her over the top.

Jerry Shottenkirk's Daily Picks

Gulfstream Park - Race #3
Picks Notes
#5 Verdict Is In Can get an ideal pace setup and makes his 1st of the claim for Dibona stable; takes a slight drop but that is not uncommon at this level. Wins in he runs back to his last one.
#9 Drama in Dixie Has stalked slow fractions and has a lacked a big kick because of it; can get a better pace scenario and fits with these.
#1 Bahamian Park Ran a solid 2nd on the front end two back and then fizzled in his latest; makes 2nd start in Kimmel barn and can improve.
Race Summary Verdict Is In can stalk from just off the pace and has the finishing move to get past this field.

Gulfstream Park - Race #6
Picks Notes
#6 Key Biscayne Was on the board in her last three and made a strong move to just miss last out; was probably best in that one as she ran into traffic problems on the first turn and swung to the far outside in the stretch. A clean trip makes her ultra troublesome.
#2 Aizu Made a good move and finished 2nd vs. Florida-breds last time; showed a lot of improvement in her 1st turf attempt and can be a strong player throughout.
#3 Awesome Ella Makes her 1st of the year after starting and finishing 2019 in southern California; can threatened to run into the exotics.
Race Summary Key Biscayne dropped back early due to trouble last time and is might have a reveled a better off-the-pace running style; has been dangerous up close or as a stalker.

Gulfstream Park - Race #8
Picks Notes
#4 High Noon Rider Closed with an impressive head of steam and won going away; has the turn of foot of a serious turf runner.
#1 Dalarna Won three in a row and four of her last five until finishing 2nd last out; gets Saez up and is a big player here.
#2 Flowmotion Goes after his 3rd straight win and can run into the mix late; chance for a major piece.
Race Summary High Noon Rider was impressive in two of four this year, all for the Joseph stable; clearly a strong contender and looks like the one to hold off.

Gulfstream Park - Race #7 - Post: 4:17pm - Claiming - 8.0 furlongs on the Dirt. Purse: $20,000 Class Rating: 78

Rating: Golden DollarGolden DollarGolden DollarGolden Dollar

#5 STILL SCHEMIN (ML=6/1)
#4 NEVERSTOPDREAMING (ML=4/1)
#1 CHASING THE CANDY (ML=3/1)

STILL SCHEMIN - Lander drops him down to this class level. You don't need too much more handicapping information to think this horse has a darn good chance at this level. I am keen on that most recent effort on April 9th at Gulfstream Park where he ran first. The most recent speed fig of 78 is the highest last race speed fig in the group. NEVERSTOPDREAMING - Taking a trip down in class; has the ability to make his presence felt. CHASING THE CANDY - Taking a trip down the ladder based on class rating points; has the capability to make his presence felt.

Vulnerable Contenders: #7 SHANGHAI MOON (ML=5/2), #3 AWESOME PARTY (ML=7/2),

SHANGHAI MOON - A bit of a less than stellar outing when this colt finished ninth. Garnered a run-of-the-mill speed rating last time out in a $20,000 Claiming race on Apr 12th. Improbable to see an improved performance off of that rating. AWESOME PARTY - Registered a pedestrian speed rating in the last race in a $25,000 Claiming race on Apr 16th. Not probable to see an improved performance off of that figure.

Top HatGUEST COMMENTARY: The Brain - STILL SCHEMIN - I would theorize that this racer should sit in the 'garden' spot, then this gelding should be flying down the stretch and romp to victory.

STRAIGHT WAGERS:
Have to go with #5 STILL SCHEMIN on the win end if we get at least 2/1 odds

EXACTA WAGERS:

#2 VENETIAN HARBOR (ML=2/1)
#10 BRITISH IDIOM (ML=5/2)

VENETIAN HARBOR - The 106 last race speed fig looks mighty good in the TrackMaster PPs. Last two speed figures (107, 106) were dominant. Anything close to that in this event and this one may win easily. BRITISH IDIOM - This horse likes to win at different tracks. The switch in venue today may be a wake up call. This thoroughbred collects a lot of cash per start. I believe she will boost the lifetime bankroll right here.

Vulnerable Contenders: #3 SWISS SKYDIVER (ML=6/1),

SWISS SKYDIVER - Almost certainly won't make much of a mark this time.

Top HatGUEST COMMENTARY: The Brain - VENETIAN HARBOR - This filly has, according to my information, dominant early speed. Look for this one to be in front when the field turns for home, straight through to the wire.

STRAIGHT WAGERS:
Have to go with #2 VENETIAN HARBOR on the win end if we get at least 7/5 odds

Odds shown are morning line odds.

Race 10 - Maiden - 300y on the Dirt. Purse: $12300 Class Rating: 71

QUARTER HORSE 300Y, FOR MAIDENS, TWO YEARS OLD. WEIGHT, 124 LBS.

RECOMMENDED CHOICES
The Walker Group Picks

# 4 LEADING CARTEL 7/2

# 5 FIERCE APOLLO 15/1

# 6 TO KISS A DIVA 15/1

LEADING CARTEL is my choice. First time entrants out of Big Daddy Cartel have a sound ROI of +32. He looks formidable in this slot and I expect will be on the front end or close at the midpoint. FIERCE APOLLO - The fillies and colts of this sire have historically shown competitive gains. TO KISS A DIVA - Seaton has one of the most competitive winning percentages in this group with entries running at this distance and surface. This conditioner has done soundly recently with entries running at this distance and surface.

RECOMMENDED CHOICES
The Walker Group Picks

# 7 TAOS 9/5

# 8 DRILLOMATIC 7/2

# 3 LION CHARMER 5/1

TAOS has a decent shot to take this race. He looks solid in this spot and I expect will be on the front end or close at the halfway point. Has to be given consideration - I like the figs from the last race. Is a strong contender based on figures posted lately under today's conditions. DRILLOMATIC - He has been running admirably and the Equibase speed figs are among the most favorable in this group. Rodriguez has a sharp winning percentage with horses racing in turf route races.
