Opening night for two more teams is Wednesday night in the Association as the Boston Celtics take on the Philadelphia 76ers in an Eastern conference clash. The line in this matchup opened with the 76ers -6, and the Over/Under opened at 220. We're now seeing Philadelphia as a -5 point favorite and the over/under has come way down and is at 212. The nice thing about betting on the NBA early in the season is that you usually know just as much as the oddsmakers, so we stand a pretty good chance to get out to a nice start, and you stand to gain quite a bit if you're right with your hunches.
Wednesday night Al Horford and Joel Embiid will be on the court together, and I don't think Boston have an answer for them. There will be plenty of motivation here with Horford playing against his old team so expect some fireworks. Combine his production with Embiid averaged 29ppg points and 15rpg in four games vs. Boston in 2018/19) in the middle and Tobias Harris at the SF position, and of course with Ben Simmons, and Josh Richardson and Phili should see an uptick in their points-per-game. This should jump start this team considering they ranked second in the NBA last year in first-quarter scoring at a 30ppg clip. They also averaged 61ppg in the first half at home.
For Boston Kemba Walker can score with the best of them and averaged 37ppg last year vs. Phili, but after him there's quite the dropoff. Jayson Tatum is the top returning scorer at 15.7ppg, and of course Gordon Hayward at full health will be tested. Jaylen Brown and Marcus Smart will also make big contributions as will Enes Kanter, but you and I know that this team doesn't match up well with Philadelphia. Some trends to consider. Boston are 1-4 ATS in their last 5 games, and 1-4 SU in their last 5 games against an opponent in the Eastern conference. Philadelphia are 8-3 ATS in their last 11 games, and 4-1 ATS in their last 5 games at home.
Replacing Horford’s production will be impossible with their current frontcourt so I don't expect Boston to start out on the right foot here Wednesday night, and I do expect Ben Simmons to come out hitting jumpers because by all reports he's looking a little bit better, and that's saying a lot. 76ers by 10.
