Let's keep the free pick win streak on ice alive, by taking the two-time Stanley Cup champion Pittsburgh Penguins, over the Carolina Hurricanes.
I get asked all the time about the Vegas Golden Knights, and if I think they're the favorites to win the Stanley Cup. But I tell them no every time. I don't care that the books made them the odds-on favorite, that's simply to fend off the bettors looking to make a big score with a team that is having an unbelievable. After all, the books are already sweating the 100-to-1 tickets out there.
Fact is, the favorite each year - in my eyes - is the defending champ. And Pittsburgh has been playing like a defending champ of late.
The Pens, who are 7-1-1 in February, have won five in a row and are 17-4-1 since the turn of the year. While the Golden Knights are the best story in sports in a long time, the Penguins have been one of the best - if not the best - team in the league in 2018.
Heading into Thursday’s games, only the Toronto Maple Leafs had compiled a better record since the All-Star Break, but I still think the Penguins are the better team.
When the Hurricanes defeated the Pens, 4-0, on Jan. 4 at PPG Paints Arena, Pittsburgh had lost three of four games, including two to these same ‘Canes, to drop to 20-19-3 and three points out of the final playoff spot.
Now the Pens are just one point shy of being atop the Metropolitan Division.
I like Pittsburgh, as it continues to play like a two-time champ, and steals this on the road.
