Friday's NBA Tip Sheet
By Josh Jacobs

Does it surprise you that the Houston Rockets are 7-3 in their last 10 without Tracy McGrady in the lineup? And what about the race to burst the bubble in the East? Is their a team at the bottom half of the standings other then Chicago that actually wants to extend the season?

With less then a dozen or so games left for any given team, the ’09 NBA regular season is about to become another part of history. But before we grab our cash and run over to playoff wagering there’s still some unfinished business to resolve. And that’s where Friday brings us.

Milwaukee at Orlando – 7:00 p.m. EDT

Want a “fade” team to focus on? Then Milwaukee is as good as they come. A 1-9 ATS dip in the last 10 can be partially attributed to allowing 103.6 PPG on defense. Take into account that books have set the Bucks as underdogs in seven of those 10 games, at an average point spread of 6.1 points and have been outscored by a point margin of 8.5 PPG and the picture should become much more vivid. Getting ready to face a quality Magic team, Milwaukee finds itself at a much healthier looking, 10-7 ATS on the road versus teams with a winning record and is 13-10 ATS as six to 14-plus point underdogs. Orlando did look a bit flat in a win against the Knicks on Monday (winning 106-102) followed by a nice looking ‘W’ against Boston (84-82) even after getting outscored 20-14 in the fourth quarter. But thanks to a big time block by possible defensive player of the year, Dwight Howard with 3.8 seconds left, the Magic found themselves closing down the gym as winners. The problem remains; Orlando is now 0-3 ATS in its last three outings. The good news; attributed to a great defensive effort in the last six games (allowing just 91.8 PPG), the Magic are 6-0 on the ‘under’. In the last six home games, Orlando is 6-0 SU but is a mortal, 3-3 ATS. The Magic are also an impressive 26-16 ATS off one-day of rest.

Boston at Atlanta – 7:30 p.m. EDT

The Celtics could be entering the playoffs as the No. 3 seeded team. Breaking a recent four-game winning streak in Orlando, Boston will travel to Atlanta on Friday before turning to an easier schedule to close out the season. Just three teams playing over .500, including Atlanta, remain on the Celtics’ docket. But there’s no overlooking Boston’s 8-6 SU record since picking up troubled point guard, Stephon Marbury. Even worse is a 4-10 ATS stint in the same 14 games that Marbury has been part of the organization. The Hawks own a 5-2 ATS edge in the last seven head-to-head games against Boston while the home team is 8-1 ATS in the last nine meetings. Atlanta has been laying waste to opponents with a seven-game winning streak coming to an end in Cleveland (102-96) on Mar. 21. The ‘over’ has been on a nice, 4-1 run in the last five as well, thanks to the Hawks shooting close to 50 percent from the floor, resulting in 102.2 PPG scored on offense. In their last meeting on Dec. 17, the Celtics were able to grab the 88-85 win, but failed to cover the four-point spread.

Denver at Dallas – 8:30 p.m. EDT

Possibly the sharpest game on the board, Dallas is just looking to grab whatever wins it can before the end of the season as a three-game lead for the No. 8 spot seems too close for comfort. The Mavericks have been rolling as a 9-0 SU record in their last nine home stands and a 14-1 SU performance in their last 15 home games is testament to. But road games have been a different story. Dallas is just 3-8 SU in its last 11 trips away from American Airlines Center. At least a 6-3 ATS record in the last nine overall has resulted in profit made at the counter (if you’re a backer of course). Some numbers to invest time into include the Mavs’ 19-23 ATS record off one-day of rest, a 13-21 ATS slide after coming off an ATS win (against Golden State, 128-106 as 9 ½-point favorites) and a 15-15 ATS as the home favorite. The Nuggets are on a run of their own, jumping to the occasion with a 6-1 SU and 4-3 ATS record in the last seven games. Shooting 47.3 percent from the perimeter in the same seven and 40.8 percent in the last five has helped push the offensive average to 111.9 PPG through the 6-1 run. But with the good comes the bad and a 2-7 SU and a 3-6 ATS fall in the last nine road trips has been hard to ignore. On the road this season, the Nuggets are 18-17 ATS. Maybe a 23-16-1 ATS record off one-day of rest can add just a bit of wagering confidence.

Memphis at Sacramento – 10:00 p.m. EDT

The last contest of the evening is also one of the least exciting based on yearly performances. The Grizzlies have worked for two wins in their last 19 games, are scoring 90.8 PPG in their last five (just 93.1 PPG on the season) and have been wildly unpredictable in the totals department (5-5 on the ‘over’ in the last 10 and 36-34 on the ‘under’ during the season). At least the Kings have harnessed a 10-7 ATS record in the last 17 despite falling on their face with a 4-17 SU disaster in their last 21. And a 7-5 performance on the ‘under’ in the last 12 is another welcomed trend (although not flattering by any means). In head-to-head matchups, Sacramento is 2-1 ATS in the last three games but has gone 3-7 ATS in the last 10. The ‘over’ is 3-0 in the last three meetings and is 7-3 in the last 10.

Milwaukee vs. Orlando

Orlando comes off a nice win over Boston, although did not cover the -3.5 spread (winning by just 2). Orlando killed this team by 26 last time they played in milwaukee; big revenge game for the bucks; but they are so horrible on the road currently as evidenced by their last game in toronto; a small lean on the bucks first half here as you can probably get a good line there.

Charlotte vs. Philadelphia

Philly beat this team by 6 earlier this year on jan 9; charlotte won before that by 9 as a 3 point dog at home; charlotte comes off a home loss to indiana; then a loss to washington on the road despite fighting for a playoff spot; philly comes off 3 straight wins and has won 7 of 9 as they too make a playoff push; charlotte needs a big game so they should show up well for this game; a small lean on charlotte as i can see them winning outright with some urgency; just a small lean though

Boston vs. Atlanta

Atlanta has a great history of covering against boston in atl; atlanta has covered the last 4 times these 2 teams have played in atl dating back to the eastern conference playoffs last year; there is no line yet as i write this; boston comes off a tough loss to orlando and the hawks come off a loss to the spurs; tough go either way.

Minnesota vs. Cleveland

I have a standard rule in not wagering against cleveland; the line is no surprise as it is 14 as teams such as the wiz or whoever it might be that is a considerable sub .500 team this spread gets laid; cleveland beat this team by 23 last time out; if anything a small lean on the under as i have this game at 188; but no large significance.

Lakers vs. New Jersey

You bet against the lakers despite the road chalk you get what happened at OKC or what happened at the pistons yesterday; this team just keeps on covering; lakers beat this team by 27 at home last time; nj is struggling of late as well but I can't force myself to lay road chalk but the lakers have covered 3 in a row.
