Preview: Nuggets at Clippers
Gracenote
Apr 6, 2018

The Los Angeles Clippers are mathematically still alive in the race for a Western Conference playoff spot, but they'll need to win and get plenty of help over the final five days of the regular season. The Denver Nuggets, who visit the Clippers on Saturday, are closer to a playoff spot but are locked in a group of six teams fighting for five spots entering play on Friday.

The Nuggets are charging ahead with wins in four straight games and beat one of the teams in front of them, the Minnesota Timberwolves, 100-96 on Thursday. "Every game is big," reserve center Mason Plumlee told the team's website following the latest triumph. "There are only so many left. We knew this was a big one coming in. As big as this one is, we have to forget about it just as quickly and go to L.A. and get another one." The Clippers are not playing as well of late and dropped three of the last four, including a 117-95 setback at Utah on Thursday that dropped them two games behind the Nuggets with three to play. "We try to win the three and see if we can get help," Los Angeles coach Doc Rivers told reporters. "That can happen. We play the teams in front of us, but we're going to need a lot of help."

TV: 3:30 p.m. ET, NBATV, Altitude (Denver), FS Prime Ticket (Los Angeles)

ABOUT THE NUGGETS (44-35): Denver's last four wins came by an average of 2.8 points, and the team is learning how to play through mistakes. "We're not folding," swingman Will Barton told the Denver Post. "Good play. Bad play. Guys just come together and we stand in it together. There's just a lot of togetherness right now, and I love it." The Nuggets are being led by center Nikola Jokic, who struggled to 6-of-20 from the floor on Thursday but finished an assist shy of a triple-double with 16 points, 14 rebounds and nine assists.

ABOUT THE CLIPPERS (42-37): Los Angeles went into a virtual must-win in Utah on Thursday and allowed the Jazz to shoot 53 percent from the floor. "It was the first game I thought we let go of the rope," Rivers told reporters. "Like, you could see it early. It was disappointing. It happens. It's life. We have to get over it. I have to watch the film. That was disappointing tonight." The Clippers went 3-of-17 from 3-point range in the loss as leading scorer Lou Williams was held to 3-of-12 from the floor and totaled 12 points with three assists and four turnovers.

BUZZER BEATERS

1. Danilo Gallinari (hand) sat out the last two games and is day-to-day.

2. Nuggets reserve PG Devin Harris scored 20 points on Thursday, doubling his total from the previous two games.

3. Los Angeles took the first two meetings this season by an average of 3.5 points.

PREDICTION: Nuggets 109, Clippers 101

Saturday’s NBA slate only has six games on tap and since a lot of the contests have looked like “G-League” matchups lately, I’m focusing on the meaningful matchups. Make a note that if the first round of the NBA playoffs started today, this would be the current bracket.

East
1 Toronto vs. 8 Washington
2 Boston vs. 7 Milwaukee
3 Philadelphia vs. 6 Miami
4 Cleveland vs. 5 Indiana

West
1 Houston vs. 8 Minnesota
2 Golden State vs. 7 Oklahoma City
3 Portland vs. 6 San Antonio
4 Utah vs. 5 New Orleans

All eight seeds in the Eastern Conference are locked up and Toronto (1) and Boston (2) have sealed their spots. The top two spots in the West are also set with Houston (1) and Golden State (2) but Portland is the only other team to clinch in that conference. We have five days left, five spots available and six seeds to be handed out in the West.

Odds per BookMaker.eu

Straight Up – SU, Against the Spread - ATS

Denver (44-35 SU, 35-41-3 ATS) at L.A. Clippers (42-37 SU, 42-37 ATS)

The action starts early with the Nuggets and Clippers clashing from the Staples Center in an afternoon matinee at 3:35 p.m. ET. Oddsmakers sent the game out as a pick ‘em but most shops are holding Denver as a two-point road favorite while the total is hovering between 222 and 223 as of Saturday morning.

Both clubs are currently on the outside of the Western Conference playoff race and a loss for either club would seriously hinder their chances. Los Angeles would be eliminated with a setback and Denver would lose its advantage over Minnesota, who sits a game above them in the eighth and final seed.

The Nuggets enter this matchup with a four-game winning streak but those victories have come by a combined 11 points and they’ve burned bettors with a 1-3 mark against the spread during this span.

Despite dealing with a ton of injuries and trading away their best player in Blake Griffin, the Clippers have been a pleasant surprise this season. However, Thursday’s 117-95 loss at Utah was telling and it seemed like head coach Doc Rivers was waving the white flag.

"It was the first game I thought we let go of the rope," Rivers said, according to the Los Angeles Times. "Like, you could see it early. It was disappointing. It happens. It's life. We have to get over it. I have to watch the film. That was disappointing tonight."

Including that loss, Los Angeles has dropped three of four and the defense (110.8 PPG) hasn’t been sharp down the stretch, which has led to a 3-1 ‘over’ mark.

L.A. should be confident for this game knowing its gone 2-0 both SU and ATS versus Denver this season.

If the Nuggets do make the playoffs, they’ll have the worst road record among the 16 teams. Headed into this game, Denver is 14-25 SU and 16-21-2 ATS as a visitor this season. As a road favorite, the Nuggets have gone 7-8 SU and 5-10 ATS this season.

Win or lose, it’s hard to imagine the Nuggets, Clippers or Timberwolves taking the series yet alone a game against the top-seeded Houston Rockets in the playoffs.

New Orleans (45-34 SU, 43-35-1 ATS) at Golden State (57-22 SU, 33-45-1 ATS)

When you see the Warriors open as seven-point home favorites, you’re expecting them to play a contender and that’s not the case with the Pelicans. That low number alone would keep me away from the game when you consider that Golden State is usually laying double digits against New Orleans. The Warriors are 19-1 in their last 20 encounters (6-13-1 ATS) against the Pelicans and that includes three wins this season, two coming by double digits and the other by eight points.

Golden State was just embarrassed on Thursday in a 126-106 loss at Indiana and while I want to believe the club should bounce back at home, the line still seems too short. After losing four in a row to playoff teams, the Pelicans have rebounded with back-to-back wins albeit versus the Grizzlies and Suns. The 122-103 victory over Phoenix last night was never in doubt and bettors should note that New Orleans has won and covered six straight on no rest.

The total (225) is the highest number posted on Saturday and deservingly so. The Pelicans are ranked third in field goals attempted per game (88.2) and the pace has picked up even more when big man DeMarcus Cousins went down for the season to injury. The ‘over’ is 7-3 in the last 10 games in this series and Golden State has posted 120-plus points in six of those games.

Oklahoma City (45-34 SU, 30-46-3 ATS) at Houston (64-15 SU, 41-36-2 ATS)

This is another tricky game where the Rockets (-6) would normally be laying a higher price but perhaps the oddsmakers believe Houston may rest players in this spot. Plus, the Rockets appear to be going through the motions the last week. Houston has gone 3-1 SU but 1-3 ATS and the most telling factor is the offense, which was held under 100 points not once but twice.

This game is much more important for Oklahoma City and it hasn’t been able to close lately. The Thunder have dropped four of their last five games and the four losses have were by a combined 12 points.

Houston and Oklahoma City split their first two meetings this season, both taking place at Chesapeake Energy Arena. In games played at the Toyota Center, the Thunder have dropped six straight to the Rockets but four of the losses were by five points or less.

The total on this game opened 220 ½ and has been pushed down to 218 ½ quickly. OKC has been involved in a ton of meaningful games lately and it has seen the ‘under’ go 6-1 in the last seven. Plus, Houston enters this game on a 6-2 run to the ‘under’ as well.

ABC will provide national coverage of this game at 8:30 p.m. ET.

Portland (48-31 SU, 43-31-5 ATS) at San Antonio (45-34 SU, 41-36-2 ATS)

No overnight line was sent out on this matchup due to the status of Trail Blazers point guard Damian Lillard (ankle) but most reports have him listed as ‘probable’ for Saturday. The first number was San Antonio -3 ½ but that was pushed up to 4 quickly while the total dropped from 202 ½ to 201 ½.

This series has been treated to tight games recently with the last four outcomes decided by four points or less. The first two games this season were played at the Moda Center and San Antonio earned a 93-91 decision in mid-December before Portland captured a 111-110 victory in early January.

The Spurs enter this game as the more desperate team and after losing back-to-back games at the Staples Center earlier this week to the Clippers (113-110) and Lakers (122-112), this matchup is definitely a must-win spot. The good news for San Antonio is that it’s won nine straight at the AT&T Cener and bettors have watched them produce an eye-opening 8-1 record during this span. The defense (92.3 PPG) has been much better in those games and that’s helped the ‘under’ go 7-2.

After Portland ripped off 13 straight wins and pushed itself up the Western Conference standings, the club has come back to life with a 4-5 record over its last nine games. They’ve dropped three in a row on the road and two of the setbacks were to the Grizzlies and Mavericks while the other came on a buzzer beater to Houston (96-94) this past Thursday. Lillard didn’t play in that setback and he also sat out the loss to Memphis.

The Trail Blazers head to Denver on Monday before closing the season at home Wednesday versus Utah and that game versus the Jazz could decide who could be the third seed in the West. The Spurs host the Kings on Monday before visiting New Orleans in the regular season finale.

Preview: Bucks at Knicks
Gracenote
Apr 7, 2018

The Milwaukee Bucks are fighting for positioning in the Eastern Conference playoff picture as they visit the New York Knicks on Saturday. Milwaukee stands seventh in the competition, a half-game behind the Miami Heat and a half-game ahead of the Washington Wizards.

The Bucks have lost two of their past three games and didn't play like a postseason entrant during Thursday's 119-111 home loss to the Brooklyn Nets. "We need everybody," Bucks swingman Tony Snell told reporters. "It's playoff time. We need everybody to step up and play hard. It's a team effort, so we need everybody." New York looked like a squad ready to roll over before erupting to break a four-game losing streak with Friday's 122-98 victory over the Miami Heat. It was a rare superb performance by a squad that has already clinched a fourth consecutive 50-loss campaign, equaling the franchise's worst such stretch since 1960-64.

TV: 7:30 p.m. ET, FS Wisconsin (Milwaukee), MSG (New York)

ABOUT THE BUCKS (42-37): All-Star forward Giannis Antetokounmpo has 2,004 points on the season to mark just the seventh time in franchise history that a player has reached 2,000 -- Kareem Abdul-Jabbar did it five times and Michael Redd did it once. Antetokounmpo had 19 points, 10 rebounds, seven assists and four steals in the loss to the Nets but his 7-of-21 shooting performance was a factor in the setback. "I just missed shots, it wasn't my day," Antetokounmpo told reporters afterward. "I've just got to keep doing the right thing. As a team, we've just got to keep doing the right thing."

ABOUT THE KNICKS (28-51): Guard Damyean Dotson exploded with career highs of 30 points and 11 rebounds against the Heat to become the first New York rookie since Hall of Famer Patrick Ewing in 1985-86 to have at least 30 points and 10 rebounds in a game. Dotson, who was a second-round draft pick out of Houston, spent time in the G League this season and has been waiting for an opportunity. "Just trying to stay the course and keep believing, keep working hard and eventually something good will happen," Dotson told reporters after his breakout game. "Just playing the right way, and believe in the development. ... I felt it would come together eventually."

BUZZER BEATERS

1. The Bucks are 3-0 against the Knicks this season and have won the past five meetings.

2. Milwaukee swingman Khris Middleton scored 31 points against the Nets for his ninth 30-point effort of the campaign.

3. New York G Tim Hardaway Jr. (ankle) and F Michael Beasley (knee) are questionable after being injured Friday and PG Emmanuel Mudiay (concussion) will sit out after being injured on a fall during Friday's contest.

PREDICTION: Bucks 110, Knicks 106

Preview: Nets at Bulls
Gracenote
Apr 7, 2018

The Brooklyn Nets and Chicago Bulls have combined for over 100 losses as they begin a home-and-home series on Saturday in Chicago. Despite the lackluster campaigns, the Bulls won three consecutive games before losing to the Boston Celtics on Friday, while Brooklyn has shown life by splitting its past 10 games.

The Nets are coming off an impressive 119-111 road victory over the playoff-bound Milwaukee Bucks on Thursday and the victory prompted coach Kenny Atkinson to remind observers that the team isn't just playing out the string. "I keep saying 'We're playing for a lot,'" Atkinson told reporters. "We're playing for our future, we're playing for our culture ... we're playing for our fans." Chicago let an 11-point first-half lead get away in the loss to the Celtics as it fell to 10-30 on the road. Journeyman guard Sean Kilpatrick was solid with a season-best 24 points and is averaging 22.5 over the past two games.

TV: 8 p.m. ET, YES (Brooklyn), NBCS Chicago

ABOUT THE NETS (26-53): Guard D'Angelo Russell scored 22 points in the victory over the Bucks for his first 20-point effort since also producing 22 against the Dallas Mavericks on March 17. The 22-year-old Russell is averaging a team-leading 15.5 points in 45 games during a season interrupted by knee surgery and next season will be a big campaign for him in his quest to land a large contract. The Nets previously picked up his $7 million option as part of the contract he signed with the Los Angeles Lakers after being the No. 2 overall selection of the 2015 draft.

ABOUT THE BULLS (27-52): Rookie forward Lauri Markkanen scored 20 points in the loss to Boston for his third straight strong outing. Markannen is 22-of-36 shooting while averaging 22.3 points during the three-game stretch as he continues to display that he is a building block for the franchise. "It's a learning process. You have to build that chemistry with everybody," Markkanen told reporters. "I think everybody knows if you're not getting the ball or getting to your own spots that you're normally getting to."

BUZZER BEATERS

1. Swingman Allen Crabbe scored 21 points as the Nets routed the visiting Bulls 104-87 on Feb. 26.

2. Brooklyn SF DeMarre Carroll (hip) will miss his second straight, while F Dante Cunningham (back) and C Jahlil Okafor (ankle) are both questionable after sitting out against Milwaukee.

3. Chicago backup PG Jerian Grant is averaging 13 points and three steals over the past three games.

PREDICTION: Bulls 106, Nets 103

Preview: Thunder at Rockets
Gracenote
Apr 6, 2018

The Houston Rockets are still playing hard despite already having homecourt advantage throughout the playoffs and the best record in franchise history clinched. The Oklahoma City Thunder, who visit the Rockets on Saturday, are still trying to lock down their own postseason spot and lost four of their last five games.

The Thunder have been off since dropping a 111-107 decision at home to the Golden State Warriors on Tuesday and spent the next few days watching the standings in the Western Conference tighten to the point that six teams are fighting over five spots. "We control our own destiny," power forward Patrick Patterson told the team's website. "By any means necessary we have to get these three wins. So, what other teams do, we don't pay attention to it. At the end of the day, we have to win and that's our only focus and that should be our only focus." Houston won 30 of its last 32 games and used a last-second shot from point guard Chris Paul to earn a 96-94 triumph over the Portland Trail Blazers on Thursday. The Rockets are keeping their foot on the pedal to stay sharp for the playoffs, and both Paul and James Harden logged over 30 minutes in the win.

TV: 8:30 p.m. ET, ABC

ABOUT THE THUNDER (45-34): All-Star forward Paul George is a free agent after the season and insists the ending of the current campaign won’t influence his decision to stay with the franchise long term. A small change that could help the team in the near future would be an improvement in shooting for George, who went 5-of-19 from the floor on Tuesday and has not hit even half of his shots in a game since going 10-of-15 at Memphis on Feb. 14. "There's something mechanical in my shot," George told reporters. "I've had struggles throughout the season and my career of shooting, but it's all just been about not making shots. I don't know what it is. It feels funny. Shooting the ball feels funny. So, I'm going to work with the trainers and try and figure that out. But I don't feel myself shooting the ball right now."

ABOUT THE ROCKETS (64-15): Harden and Paul are carrying the scoring load, but center Clint Capela continues to be a solid member of the star trio. The 23-year-old recorded his third consecutive double-double and 41st of the season with 11 points and 10 rebounds on Thursday and anchored the defense with a pair of steals and a block. Capela leads the NBA in field-goal percentage at .652 and pulled out of a rare shooting slump by combining to go 13-of-16 from the floor over the last two games.

BUZZER BEATERS

1. Rockets SG Eric Gordon (foot) sat out Thursday and is day-to-day.

2. Thunder F Carmelo Anthony went 0-of-9 from 3-point range on Tuesday after going a combined 12-of-21 in the three previous contests.

3. Houston earned a 122-112 win at Oklahoma City on March 6 as Paul and Harden combined for 48 points.

PREDICTION: Rockets 109, Thunder 103

Preview: Pelicans at Warriors
Gracenote
Apr 7, 2018

The Golden State Warriors look to continue their repeated domination of New Orleans on Saturday when they host the Pelicans in a contest vitally important to New Orleans. The Pelicans have lost the last 10 meetings, 20 of the past 21 and a win would help them move closer to one of the Western Conference's eight playoff spots.

New Orleans posted a pivotal 122-103 victory over the Phoenix Suns on Friday and is one of three teams tied for fifth in the Western Conference while also being just one game ahead of the ninth-place Denver Nuggets. "It’s the way it has been the last month and month-and-a-half," Pelicans coach Alvin Gentry told reporters of the logjam after Friday's win. "It's not anything unusual, it is kind of what we're accustomed to right now." The Warriors continue to stagger down the stretch and fell to 6-8 over their last 14 games with a 126-106 road loss against the Indiana Pacers on Thursday that prompted coach Steve Kerr to say his team didn't care. "Just trying, cutting hard, driving, maybe boxing out once in a while," Kerr told reporters while criticizing his team. "Just in general, it's hard to win an NBA game if you don't put forth an effort at all."

TV: 8:30 p.m. ET, FS New Orleans, NBCS Bay Area (Golden State)

ABOUT THE PELICANS (45-34): All-Star Anthony Davis had 33 points and 11 rebounds against the Suns, and received superb help from fellow forward Nikola Mirotic, who scored a season-best 31 points and matched his career high of 16 rebounds. Mirotic is averaging 28 points over the past two games and has scored 20 or more in three of the past four contests while pointing toward the attention paid to Davis as one of the factors in his recent stellar play. "The defense against A.D. collapses," Mirotic told reporters after Friday's game. "So me and the rest of the guys have to be ready to make those shots when we have those shots. When he's rolling, most of the time I'm open."

ABOUT THE WARRIORS (57-22): Golden State remains without All-Star point guard Stephen Curry (knee) but Kerr doesn't want to hear about injuries being a factor in the poor stretch. Kerr repeatedly expressed that he was "embarrassed" after the drubbing by the Pacers and stated that maybe "we'll try next week" when the playoffs start. "He's the head coach, and he has the right to (call us out)," Warriors backup point guard Shaun Livingston told reporters. "He sat there the whole game and watched what was right in front of him. So we've got to be better. We've got to be better."

BUZZER BEATERS

1. The Warriors last lost at home to New Orleans on April 24, 2012 when they dropped an 83-81 decision.

2. Golden State SF Kevin Durant is averaging 30.5 points over the past two but is just 17-of-48 from the field while sinking all 23 free-throw attempts.

3. New Orleans G Jrue Holiday registered 22 points and 10 assists against Phoenix and has topped 20 points in four of the past seven games.

PREDICTION: Pelicans 112, Warriors 109

Preview: Trail Blazers at Spurs
Gracenote
Apr 6, 2018

The San Antonio Spurs are in the unfamiliar position of still fighting for a playoff spot with less than a week remaining in the regular season. The Spurs will try to draw closer to clinching their 21st straight berth in the Western Conference playoffs when they host the Portland Trail Blazers on Saturday.

San Antonio is one of six teams fighting over five spots and gets the next two at home after dropping back-to-back games in Los Angeles to the Clippers and Lakers. "We've got to know that every game is a playoff, a Game 7 for us," Spurs point guard Dejounte Murray told reporters after Wednesday's 122-112 overtime loss to the Lakers. "We've got to play for 48 minutes, and if the game decides to go to overtime like it did tonight, we've got to be ready to play even more. We've just got to be ready to compete for the whole game. We come out hot in a lot of games, and there are some quarters we give up 38-40 points, and it ends up hurting us in the end." The Trail Blazers already have their spot in the playoffs secured and are closing in on clinching the No. 3 slot. Portland is struggling on the road of late and fell at Dallas and Houston to open the four-game trip.
TV: 9 p.m. ET, NBCS Northwest (Portland), FS Southwest (San Antonio)

ABOUT THE TRAIL BLAZERS (48-31): Portland overcame a 17-point deficit to tie the Rockets before falling 96-94 on Thursday, and the reserves led the charge. Point guard Wade Baldwin IV led the bench effort and contributed 14 points on 6-of-10 shooting in 32 minutes. "Wade Baldwin had a terrific night," Trail Blazers coach Terry Stotts told reporters. "He’s in great condition to do what he did on both ends. To pick up (James) Harden full court, to pick up Chris Paul full court, harass them as much as he did and still push the tempo. To do that for (32) minutes, that was an impressive game."

ABOUT THE SPURS (45-34): San Antonio squandered a 19-point lead in the loss to the Clippers and was outscored 27-21 in the fourth quarter against the Lakers. "It was the worst outcome, losing two games that we had our chances and even times, especially (Tuesday), were in control with big leads," center Pau Gasol told reporters. "But two losses, and that is reality. (Wednesday), a tough one as well. Give (the Lakers) credit, they made a lot of tough shots, a lot just unreal, but it can happen. These guys play with no fear and have the green light to get them up." The Spurs host the Sacramento Kings on Monday before ending their season at another team fighting for a playoff spot in the New Orleans Pelicans.

BUZZER BEATERS

1. Trail Blazers All-Star PG Damian Lillard (ankle) sat out Thursday for precautionary reasons and is day-to-day.

2. Spurs PF LaMarcus Aldridge is averaging 27.8 points and 10.8 rebounds over the last four games.

3. Portland took three of the last four meetings, including a 111-110 home win in the most recent matchup on Jan. 7.

PREDICTION: Spurs 108, Trail Blazers 99
