NHL | Penguins vs Flyers
Play on: Penguins -113 at betonline

The set-up: Pittsburgh comes in hungry after a 5-4 loss to Tampa Bay on the road, while Philadelphia comes in complacent after its 6-2 home win over Anaheim. The Pens will clearly be the “hungrier” team here as they’ve lost four straight. Pens’ goaltender Matt Murray is still 9-3 with a 2.26 GAA on the road this year and I think he’ll be a big difference maker in this one (note that Murray is a solid 3-2 with a 3.00 GAA lifetime vs. the Flyers.) Pittsburgh averages 3.36 goals on the road and it allows 2.96 goals in those contests. The Flyers have been hot overall of late, but I think they’ll stumble here vs. this determined Pens side. Philadelphia averages 2.96 goals and it allows 3.04.

The pick: Take it for what you will as well, but Pittsburgh is still 62-36 (+10.4 units) in its last 98 after allowing four or more goals in its previous outing, while Philadelphia is just 4-8 (-4.3 units) this season after a victory by two goals or more. Consider Pittsburgh in this one.

Play - Minnesota Timberwolves (Game 566).

Edges - Timberwolves: 6-0 ATS home on Mondays … Clippers: coming off a double-digit win as double-digit dogs at Boston in last games… We recommend a 1* play on Minnesota. Thank you and good luck as always.

567 Miami at Denver

Nuggets return home from a four game roadtrip having lost three straight games. This team has played in a different city nine straight games including tonight. With a double digit spread we simply cannot see this team winning by a large margin, despite Miami playing its third game in four days.

Have to lay it with the Baylor Bears tonight, as a couple of slumping Big Twelve teams will take to the floor in Waco tonight.

Oklahoma comes into this conference road game at 15-9 for the year, but Lon Kruger's team has dropped 6 of their past 8 games, including 4 straight. It's a skid that started at home on Monday the 28th of January when Baylor came into Norman and tattooed Oklahoma, 77-47 as the +5 1/2 point road dog!

Baylor has followed 6 straight conference wins and covers with losses in their last pair of games, as the Bears lost at Texas and just lost over the weekend at home against Big 12 leader Kansas State, 70-63 in a tough one.

Both teams need this one, that is for sure. My feeling is the home court is going to make the difference in this second series meeting between the schools. The Bears have won 4 of the last 5 played between the teams, and they have covered in 3 straight and in 4 of the last 5 played between the teams as well.

This 4 game slide the Sooners are on has seen them average just 61.5 points per game, with that 47 points in the first meeting against Baylor being their season-low. I would think OU is due for a higher output tonight, but when you are reeling the way the Sooners are, it's not easy to stop the bleeding when playing away from home.

Baylor is the top offensive team in the conference, and they do lead the Big 12 in three-point shooting percentage as well, that despite just a 6-for-24 afternoon over the weekend in their home loss to Kansas State. I think that the Bears will rebound tonight on their home floor as they deal the slumping Sooners another loss.

Go with the Bears as the home favorite tonight.

My free winner for tonight comes from the SWAC, as I love Jackson State at Southern A&M tonight. How this game is a pick'em is beyond me, as the Tigers have been so much better since league play started.

Jackson State is 6-4 in conference action, since opening the campaign 3-10, and rolls into this one having covered 16 of its last 21 road games. And much of the Tigers' success can be attributed to a defense that has improved lately.

Jackson State gives up 67.2 points per game, and 69.6 points per road contest. But over its last five games, the Tigers have limited teams to just 62.6 points per game. And that couples well with Southern scoring a mere 62.2 points in its last five.

The Jaguars are only 3-20 this season, with a 2-8 mark in league play. Their defense is horrific, giving up 77.8 points per contest, and 70 per home contest. And when these teams met last month, Jackson State scored a 64-58 victory over the Jags.

Jackson State (6-4) is three games back of Prairie View A&M (9-1) in the SWAC. But the Tigers are also embattled in a race for second place, as Texas Southern is 7-3 and Grambling State and Alabama State are tied with Jackson State. So victories are needed at this point, to keep pace and earn a higher seed before the postseason tournament, which opens at home sites.

Southern is second-to-last, one game in front of Mississippi Valley State, and realistically has been one of the biggest disappointments in this league this season. The Jags were supposed to be much better than what we've seen.

Play Jackson State here.

Both Washington and Detroit have been playing well as they head to the All-Star Break this Friday, as the Wizards hit the Motor City with wins and covers in their last pair of games, while the Pistons have won and covered 3 straight.

Who gets the job done tonight?

I say go with the home team here, as Detroit has recorded their last 3 wins by an average of almost 19 points per contest. Detroit is also expected to have the newly acquired Wayne Ellington in the lineup tonight as they look to move themselves into the playoff picture.

Currently, Detroit is tied with Miami for the 8th playoff spot in the Eastern Conference after the Heat lost at Golden State last night. They also sit 2 games ahead of the Wizards in the playoff seedings, and on their home court tonight I do see them taking care of business against the Wizards here on Monday.

These teams have split their pair of meetings this year, with the home team winning and covering in both showdowns. The home team has now won and covered in each of the last 3 series meetings, and has also won in 7 of the last 10 meetings overall.

The Wizards are just 7-21 straight up on the road this year, and a not-much-better 8-21 against the spread in those road contests. They are also just 3-4 against the spread when listed as an underdog of +4 to +6 1/2 points.

The Pistons have been off since completing their home-and-home sweep of the Knicks on Friday night, and they do own a 5-1 spread mark their last 6 when playing on 2 days or more rest.

True, the Pistons are only averaging just over 106 points per game compared to the Wizards 113-plus points per contest, but Detroit allows just 107.8 points per game compared to Washington's 116.6 points allowed. Being on the road, and allowing that many points is not a good mix when it comes to trying to win a close one away from home.

With Detroit on a little bit of a roll, I will look for Dwayne Casey's team to continue their hot streak tonight on their home floor where they have won their last pair and 3 of their last 4 straight up.

Lay the small wood with Detroit.

2* DETROIT

I know in the NBA the hot-hand tends to cool off when you jump on-board, but cannot pass on the Pacers this Monday night when they host the Hornets as Indiana is playing their 4th straight at home - and will stay at home until after the All-Star Break by the way.

The Pacers have most definitely figured out life without Oladipo, as they have rattled off 5 straight victories, and all 3 played at home during their current stretch have not been close - 42, 24 and 15 points being the margins of victory - as Indy is now 21-7 straight up on their home floor.

I like this pattern to continue tonight against the visiting Hornets who are just 8-19 straight up on the road this year, and a not-much-better 12-15 against the spread in those road games as we head to the break.

Charlotte did win their home meeting this year with Indiana easily back in November, but when they played at Banker's Life Field House, they were spanked by 25 points on January 20th. As you can see, the road just isn't kind to these Hornets when they leave their hive.

Yes, Indy does have Milwaukee coming to town next, but with the way the Pacers have been playing on this homestand - no more than 94 points surrendered in any of the games thus far - and the fact Indy is 10-4 against the spread when they are listed as the favorite between -5 to -7 1/2 points for the year, I think the way to go this Monday night is to back the red-hot Pacers for at least one more game.

Play is on Indiana.
