SPORTS WAGERS

NORTHWESTERN +7½ over Nebraska

Situationally speaking, this is as good as it gets in terms of taking back points with a home dog and it falls into one of our best angles, not once but twice. The first angle is that the Nebraska Cornhuskers have moved into the polls for the first time since 2014. When that happens, the market takes notice, which results in an overreaction almost 100% of the time. The angle is to play against a team that hits the polls for the first time. The second angle is that we now have a ranked team spotting road points to an unranked opponent. When that occurs, inflated points are involved but it still gets better. You see, Nebraska is coming off its biggest win in a very long time last week when they, as an unranked home pooch, beat a ranked Oregon team. Not only was the ‘Huskers win an emotional one, it came right down to the final minute. It was also filled with intensity and played in front of 80,000 screaming fans on National TV. Asking the Cornhuskers to bring that same intensity this week would be unreasonable and they’re simply not that great to begin with.

Meanwhile, Northwestern is getting no positive press whatsoever after two unexplainable losses to open the year against Western Michigan and Illinois State. In reality, the Wildcats loss to Western Michigan was not so surprising and they only lost by a point. The following week, Northwestern shot themselves in the foot repeatedly in a two-point loss to Illinois State. Note that Northwestern's two losses were by a combined three points. In the meantime, the Wildcats incredibly stingy defense has surrendered just 44 points in three games combined, which included a 24-13 victory over Duke last week. Finally, Northwestern went into Lincoln last year as just a seven-point dog and proceeded to upset the ‘Huskers, 30-28. This year, with similar personnel on both squads, Nebraska goes on the road as a higher priced favorite than they were at home last year and it’s all based on market perception. This is an exceptionally strong situational spot for the dog. So much so that we’re calling the upset and will play Northwestern to win outright for one unit at +258 and for 1½ units at +7½ for a total risk of 2.65 units.

TENNESSEE -5 over Florida

There has never been a better time to take the Volunteers this season until now. Typically spotting points is not our cup of tea but when there is value in a home favorite we will switch gears. Florida’s dominance in this series combined with Tennessee’s overall lackluster performances to date makes the Gators seem appealing but not to us. These two storylines have made the SEC East favorites extremely affordable in a game where actually they have the competitive edge. Sure, pundits will say Florida has won the last 11 games in this series but there is a wildcard in this scenario that the Volunteers can finally work to their advantage; the quarterback position. As many have already heard, Joshua Dobbs is the man under center for the Volunteers and while he has not performed up to the billing so far and is tasked with finding ways to quell a ferocious Gators defense, we have to believe the Volunteers have more confidence in their field general than Florida does at this point.

Florida will be without the services of their starting quarterback Luke Del Rio, who has been shelved until Mid-October with a knee injury. The Gators will rely on senior quarterback Austin Appleby to command the offense. In recent years, play at the quarterback position overall has not been Florida’s forte. Now, the Gators are tasked with going to a very hostile environment with a reserve quarterback at the helm against a malicious Volunteers defense. Butch Jones is going to force Appleby to throw and with personnel like Derek Barnett coming at him, his resolve and composure will assuredly be tested. Many Gators enthusiasts will argue that Florida came back from a double-digit deficit against Tennessee last year and that Tennessee may be psyched out. Blowing leads was a theme of Tennessee’s season overall in 2015 so Gators backers should not feel that the Gators are so special. Furthermore, while many will speak of how Tennessee could have lost to App State or struggled against Ohio, they overlooked one huge fact, which was the Volunteers routing Virginia Tech in Bristol. App State won 11 games in 2015 so they are a good football team and should have never been so undervalued, but even then it is possible the Vols were looking ahead to The Battle at Bristol the entire time. The same can be said in their endeavors against Ohio, as perhaps Tennessee once again was focused on this contest against their hated rival. The Volunteers despite injuries will come in to this game looking to make a statement and get this proverbial monkey finally off their back. This number opened at Tennessee -6½ because of Florida’s QB situation. The odds makers figured that into the number but the market has nixed that. We now get the Vols at a bargain price and we’ll try and take advantage.

Bowling Green +17 over MEMPHIS

Stock in Bowling Green is at a low after they were polished off at home against Middle Tennessee State 41-21 last week. The Falcons at 1-2 may seem as an inferior invader to host Memphis, who remains undefeated at 2-0. Once again market perception is the weighing factor here. Bowling Green on paper has yielded some abysmal results as of late after winning the MAC in 2015. They were obliterated in their bowl game against Georgia Southern 58-27 and followed this up with a season opening debacle at Ohio State, where the Bucks would run buckshot on the Falcons 77-10. Bowling Green would respond with a nail-biter win against North Dakota and then once again follow this up by being embarrassed by the aforementioned Blue Raiders. However, there was a reason we were so gung-ho on the Blue Raiders to win the C-USA, as they return a talented crop of players led by a proficient quarterback in Brent Stockstill. The same cannot be said for Memphis at this point.

Memphis, though they are undefeated, no longer have Coach Justin Fuente running the show and they no longer have the services of NFL first-round draft pick Paxton Lynch at quarterback either. The Tigers are in a transitional period under new leadership and they have been the benefactors of facing inferior opponents up to this point. Beating down Southeast Missouri State or Kansas is not enough to sell us on the Tigers. When looking back at previous results, whenever Memphis met a team that could outgun them on offense or play solid defense against them, they faltered. Bowling Green would have to be chalked as the former even if the Tigers edged them out 44-41 in 2015. While the Tigers may have defeated the Falcons in 2015, they could never put Bowling Green away because their defense was far too generous to Bowling Green’s upstart offense. Fast forward to a year later and now this same football team is tasked with spotting almost two touchdowns more than a year ago. Bowling Green’s loss to Middle Tennessee State combined with Memphis’ two victories are fantastic misnomers and this venue will serve as a great stage to expose these truths. Bowling Green is getting massively inflated points and therefore must be played today.

MARSHALL +28½ over Louisville

To think only week ago, the multitudes swarmed Marshall as an 18-point home favorite in Huntington against Akron. It would be difficult to fathom this was the way of things in light of the heavy lean we have seen on Louisville and the copious volume of points the Cards are spotting as a visitor to the hosts. The market is strictly all about perception. The stock in Louisville is through the ceiling after Lamar Jackson’s five touchdowns led the Cardinals to a spellbinding 62-20 victory over then #2 ranked Florida State a week ago. Since then, the fanfare has reached extremity. Jackson has emerged as the consensus frontrunner for the Heisman and Louisville has begun to be penciled in as a College Football Playoff qualifier.

Couple Louisville’s big win with the fact that Marshall was embarrassed at home last week by a heavy pooch in the Akron Zips and numbers like this will begin to appear. However, the offering here is a fallacy. If we were to change the variables around a bit we could easily find Marshall being spotted just a touchdown. How is this so? Take away an impressive margin of victory for Louisville, combined with Marshall winning and covering as opposed to losing horrifically and we can easily arrive at that station. Marshall is almost always a baby face when they are at home but the points they were spotting to Akron was yet another reinforcing principle of psychological perception. While Marshall never should have been spotting 18 points to Akron, that was a direct result of Akron being smashed by Wisconsin on the road and Marshall entering the game with a perceived home field advantage. Nevertheless, the Herd were untested in 2016 and the result against Akron proved that. The angle of psychological perception will once again be the influential storyline in this contest. Is Louisville worthy of this billing? Time will tell but if the Herd get their offense going at home under the lights, they can certainly challenge and force Louisville to replicate the proficiency we saw against a clearly overvalued Florida State squad that should have had a loss to their name going into that contest. Nevertheless the result generates pandemonium and much of the public are willing to pay a hefty price for the Cards. We have never been of that school of thought, as we are all about finding value in the numbers and trust we have found it here.

BUFFALO +14 over Army

One of the reasons the Black Knights are heavily favored here is because they are 3-0 and they’re coming off a 66-14 victory in UTEP. Another reason is because the Bulls are 0-2 after losses to Albany and Nevada, the latter on the road by a score of 38-14. The combined results of these two combatants have set up these inflated points we’re taking back but there are many more moving parts than just those aforementioned results. To begin with, this is a massive letdown spot for the Black Knights after their cornerback, Brandon Jackson died in a car crash shortly after Army’s win over Rice the previous week on Sept. 10. The funeral was the following Monday in New York and the entire team attended it. They dedicated the game to Jackson and played their hearts out in UTEP. The Knights will now play back-to-back road games and their third road game in four weeks. Give Army credit for three victories but let’s get real here. Army has finished with a winning record just once this century, a 7-6 mark in 2010. Otherwise, it hasn’t won more than five games since 1996. The Black Knights are 8-22 against the spread in their last 30 road games and most of the time they’re taking back big points. Now they’re laying two converted TD’s. Furthermore, Army has had nothing but good fortune on the field, as they have eight takeaways, which is third in the nation. That type of good fortune likely does not await them here.

After opening the season against Albany, Buffalo subsequently had 15 days off before they would play again at Nevada. It was also Redshirt freshman quarterback Tyree Jackson’s first career start so we can understand the difficulty the Bulls faced. However, the Bulls were able to effectively move the ball on the ground, rushing for a season-best 231 yards. The Bulls have 42 new players on the roster this season and are thus one of the most inexperienced teams in FBS but those 15 days off and a trip to Nevada likely served them well and they figure to be much better here. The Bulls have a tremendous coaching staff that starts at the top with the 2015 hiring of Lance Leipold. Leipold reached 100 victories faster than any coach in National Collegiate Athletic Association history, doing so in his 106th game on October 18, 2014. During his tenure at UWW, the Wisconsin–Whitewater Warhawks won the NCAA Division III National Football Championship in 2007, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2013, and 2014 and were runners-up in 2008. Leipold’s collegiate teams were known for a ferocious brand of defense and we should see his unit improve greatly from week-to-week. Buffalo was just a 12½-point road dog at Nevada last week and now they’re getting 14 points at home. Additionally, the Bulls catch the Army Black Knights at precisely the perfect time, that being after what will turn out to be the most emotional game in the careers of every single player on that Army squad. This one has upset written all over it but more than that is the Black Knights cannot be a two TD road favorite under these circumstances.

MINNESOTA (-17) over Colorado State

Hate to lay this kind of number with a team that not used to it but Colorado State is down to its third string QB and the rested Gophers will be able to run and pass their way into the end zone all day long against the Rams #114 rated defense. Only thing keeping this from being a phone service play is that i have 4 much better plays including a 5 STAR. Tomorrow, I put my 35-11, 76% winners, record on the line with my September 7 Star NFL Game of the Month! Looking for winners? This weekend is going to be a huge money maker for all Steam Team members. Join for the game, the weekend, the month or the season but call 1-877-332-0077 now and get set up with the Greatest Big Game handicapper in history, Harry Bondi. The contrast in playing styles is too much for the Rams to overcome here as Minny routs Colorado State!
