Washington Nationals vs. Atlanta Braves Preview and Predictions 04-04-2018

4th April 2018 by Gracenote
The Atlanta Braves figure to be one or two years away from contending, but nonetheless they have a chance to finish their season-opening six-game homestand above .500 with a victory Wednesday in the series finale against the Washington Nationals. The Braves survived another Washington first-inning onslaught in Tuesday's 13-6 victory, sparked by another outstanding game from first baseman Freddie Freeman to improve to 3-2 in the young season.

Freeman drew two walks to give him 10 through five games - breaking the franchise record of nine set in 1952 for most walks in that span - and clubbed a three-run homer to finish 2-for-3 with three runs scored and four RBIs, raising his average to .400. Washington scored three times in the first inning in Tuesday's defeat, giving the Nationals 11 runs scored in the opening frame through five games, but found itself trailing for the first time this season when Atlanta's Preston Tucker capped a four-run first with a three-run blast. Right fielder Bryce Harper remains scorching hot, slugging his fourth homer of the season Tuesday to give him a .400 average entering the series finale. Neither starter made it through four innings Tuesday, placing a premium on good outings from the starting pitchers in Wednesday's afternoon contest.

TV: 12:10 p.m. ET, MASN (Washington), FS South (Atlanta)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Nationals RH Max Scherzer (1-0, 0.00 ERA) vs. Braves RH Mike Foltynewicz (0-0, 3.60)

The two-time reigning National League Cy Young winner, Scherzer began his season in typical fashion Thursday - collecting 10 strikeouts and pitching six scoreless innings against Cincinnati. The 33-year-old makes his 298th career start Wednesday, and since opening his career 9-15 in two years with Arizona he is 133-60 with a 3.21 ERA since the start of 2010. Scherzer is 7-5 with a 3.94 ERA in 17 career appearances (15 starts) against the Braves, but only went 2-2 with a 4.41 versus Atlanta a season ago.

Foltynewicz allowed two homers in his first start Friday against Philadelphia, but otherwise pitched effectively in allowing two earned runs with one walk and seven strikeouts over five innings. The 26-year-old won 10 games last season but finished tied for sixth in the NL with 13 losses, then did not allow a run in four of his five spring training appearances. Foltynewicz struggled in four starts against Washington last season, going 1-2 with a 6.64 ERA and a 1.77 WHIP in 20 1/3 innings.

WALK-OFFS

1. The Nationals have been outstanding offensively in the first inning through five games, going 9-for-25 with 11 runs scored and 11 RBIs.

2. Atlanta 2B Ozzie Albies, who was 2-for-20 through his first four games, finished 3-for-5 with three runs scored Tuesday.

3. Washington OF Adam Eaton, who missed most of last season with a knee injury, left Tuesday's game in the sixth inning after noticeably limping while running the bases.

PREDICTION: Nationals 3, Braves 1

Tampa Bay Rays vs. New York Yankees Preview and Predictions 04-04-2018

3rd April 2018 by Gracenote
The Tampa Bay Rays will be just fine if they can figure out a way to retire Didi Gregorius. The New York Yankees' shortstop will try to follow up a two-homer, eight-RBI performance and lead his team to a sweep of the weather-abbreviated two-game series when they host the Rays in the finale on Wednesday.

Gregorius broke a third-inning tie with a three-run blast on Tuesday and added another three-run homer in the seventh before capping his career-best RBI performance with a two-run single in the eighth. The 28-year-old was hitting in the No. 4 spot in the lineup and picked up reigning National League MVP Giancarlo Stanton, who went 0-for-5 with five strikeouts out of the No. 3 spot and is 1-for-14 in four games since blasting a pair of home runs in the season opener. The Rays, who totaled three runs in dropping three in a row to the Boston Red Sox before heading to New York, continue to struggle on offense and managed only seven hits in frigid conditions against the Yankees. Tampa Bay will try to become the rare offense to have success against New York ace Luis Severino, who opposes left-hander Blake Snell in the finale.

TV: 1:05 p.m. ET, MLB Network, FS Sun (Tampa Bay), YES (New York)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Rays LH Blake Snell (0-0, 0.00 ERA) vs. Yankees RH Luis Severino (1-0, 0.00)

Snell matched Boston ace Chris Sale zero for zero on Opening Day and ended up scattering three hits and two walks while striking out a pair in 5 2/3 scoreless innings. The 25-year-old allowed two or fewer runs in six of his final eight starts last season. Snell faced New York four times in 2017 and compiled a 0-1 record with a 4.50 ERA, 11 walks and 11 strikeouts in 16 total innings.

Severino enjoyed a scoreless start on Opening Day as well, striking out seven while surrendering one hit and three walks in 5 2/3 innings at Toronto. The 24-year-old finished third in the American League Cy Young Award voting last season and racked up 230 strikeouts in 193 1/3 innings. Severino had no trouble with the Tampa Bay lineup in 2017, going 2-0 with a 2.00 ERA in three starts while striking out 27 in 18 innings.

WALK-OFFS

1. The Yankees acquired OF Trayce Thompson off waivers from the Los Angeles Dodgers.

2. Tampa Bay CF Kevin Kiermaier is 1-for-19 with seven strikeouts.

3. New York OF Jacoby Ellsbury suffered a hip injury while rehabbing a strained oblique and was shut down.

PREDICTION: Yankees 3, Rays 1

Kansas City Royals vs. Detroit Tigers Preview and Predictions 04-04-2018

4th April 2018 by Gracenote
The Kansas City Royals scored a total of two runs in the first two games of their series at the Detroit Tigers, but still left themselves in a position to grab a win in the set. The Royals will try to generate some offense and take the rubber match when they visit the Tigers for the finale of a three-game series on Wednesday afternoon.

Kansas City dropped a 6-1 decision on Monday but battled through the inclement weather on Tuesday and earned their first win of the young season 1-0 behind seven strong innings from right-hander Jakob Junis. "The wind was in my face to start with and that helped me out, gave my pitches a little more break," Junis told reporters. "I've pitched in a lot of stuff like that growing up, being from Illinois. I'm no stranger to throwing when it's cold like that. Actually, I don't struggle with grip when it's cold. Usually only when it's hot." Detroit earned its first win in the series opener but managed three hits on Tuesday in its second 1-0 loss of the season. Tigers pitchers allowed a total of 10 hits over the first two games of the series, with Francisco Liriano and Matthew Boyd each turning in quality starts.

TV: 1:10 p.m. ET, MLB Network, FS Kansas City, FS Detroit

PITCHING MATCHUP: Royals LH Danny Duffy (0-1, 11.25 ERA) vs. Tigers LH Daniel Norris (2017: 5-8, 5.31)

Duffy breezed through the first three innings scoreless on Opening Day against the Chicago White Sox but served up three home runs in a five-run fourth inning and ended up charged with five runs and seven hits in four frames. The 29-year-old yielded just 13 homers in 146 1/3 innings last season. Duffy went 2-1 with a 5.17 ERA and 21 hits allowed in 15 2/3 total innings spread across three starts against Detroit in 2017.

Norris threw a career-high 101 2/3 innings in 22 games - 18 starts - for the Tigers last season but missed nearly two months with a groin injury in July and August. The 24-year-old went into the offseason on a high note after holding Kansas City to two hits in five scoreless innings on Sept. 28. Norris went 1-1 with a 5.27 ERA in three starts against the Royals last season and is 1-2 with a 4.14 mark in seven career starts against the division rivals.

WALK-OFFS

1. Tigers RHP Mike Fiers (back) threw 83 pitches in a minor league game at the team's spring training facility on Monday and is expected to join the Detroit rotation this weekend.

2. Royals 1B Lucas Duda (hamstring) sat out Tuesday and is day-to-day.

3. Kansas City RF Jorge Soler is 0-for-8 this season after finishing 2017 in an 0-for-20 slump.

PREDICTION: Royals 4, Tigers 2

Philadelphia Phillies vs. New York Mets Preview and Predictions 04-04-2018

3rd April 2018 by Gracenote
The New York Mets send ace Noah Syndergaard to the mound looking for another strong pitching performance as they go for a sweep of a two-game home series against the rival Philadelphia Phillies on Wednesday afternoon. Matt Harvey and four relievers allowed just three hits in a 2-0 victory over the Phillies in frigid conditions Tuesday night as the Mets won for the third time in four games to open the season.

Free-agent signing Todd Frazier, who was just 2-for-10 in the first three games with his new club, had an RBI double among two hits and scored a run in Tuesday's triumph for New York, which has allowed six runs in its three wins. Syndergaard, who won the season opener, will face fellow right-hander Aaron Nola in the series finale as Philadelphia tries to avoid a 1-4 start on the road before starting a six-game homestand. The Phillies gave up 27 runs in the opening series against Atlanta, so Tuesday's performance showed some progress, but they could not get anything going with the bats as they managed three singles and left seven on base. Philadelphia left fielder Rhys Hoskins continued his strong start (6-for-14) with one of the hits, but was held without an RBI for the first time in four games.

TV: 1:10 p.m. ET, No TV

PITCHING MATCHUP: Phillies RH Aaron Nola (0-0, 1.69 ERA) vs. Mets RH Noah Syndergaard (1-0, 6.00)

Nola did not get a decision in his 2018 debut on Thursday despite limiting Atlanta to one run on three hits and one walk over 5 1/3 innings. The 24-year-old LSU product won a career-best 12 games last season with a 3.54 ERA, but was way better at home (9-5, 2.98 ERA) than on the road (3-6, 4.24). Yoenis Cespedes is 3-for-8 with a homer in his career against Nola, who went 2-0 with a 3.75 ERA and held the Mets to a .209 batting average in 2017.

Syndergaard gave up four runs on six hits in his season debut, but he battled his way through six innings while striking out 10 and walking no one. The 25-year-old Texan was 1-2 during an injury-plagued 2017 season, but registered a 1.35 ERA in five appearances during spring training. Maikel Franco is 4-for-13 while Odubel Herrera is just 1-for-17 against Syndergaard, who has handled the Phillies with a 4-1 record and 1.78 ERA in six career games.

WALK-OFFS

1. Philadelphia 1B Carlos Santana, a key free-agent signing, was hitless in three at-bats Tuesday and is 2-for-14 to start the season.

2. New York CF Brandon Nimmo went 0-for-3 in his second start Tuesday after missing the last game with flu-like symptoms.

3. Opponents are batting .306 against Phillies pitching in the early going, last in the majors.

PREDICTION: Mets 6, Phillies 2

Baltimore Orioles vs. Houston Astros Preview and Predictions 04-04-2018

4th April 2018 by Gracenote
The reigning World Series champion Houston Astros appear to have picked up right where they left off - with great pitching and timely hitting. The Astros aim for a fourth straight victory and a three-game sweep of the visiting Baltimore Orioles on Wednesday afternoon.

Houston erupted for five runs in the seventh inning on Tuesday after Baltimore had tied the game while Josh Reddick belted two homers - including a grand slam and drove in six runs in a 10-6 win. The Astros might not need much offense Wednesday as they hand the ball to ace Dallas Keuchel, who is 36-20 with a 2.87 ERA at home in his career and posted a 1.64 ERA in 10 starts last season. Baltimore's struggling offense finally broke out Tuesday with season highs in runs and hits (12). Jonathan Schoop and Adam Jones each had a homer among their three hits, but slugger Chris Davis continued his poor start, going 0-for-5 with four strikeouts to drop his batting average to .050.

TV: 2:10 p.m. ET, MASN2 (Baltimore), AT&T SportsNet-Southwest (Houston)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Orioles RH Dylan Bundy (0-0, 0.00 ERA) vs. Astros LH Dallas Keuchel (0-1, 4.50)

Bundy was dominant on Opening Day, holding Minnesota to five hits and a walk over seven innings in a no-decision. The 25-year-old struck out seven and generated 15 swinging strikes. Bundy has had trouble with the Astros, allowing eight runs over 5 1/3 frames in one start and one relief appearance.

Keuchel didn't have his best stuff in his season debut at Texas, allowing three runs and seven hits over six innings. The 2015 Cy Young Award winner surrendered a home run to Nomar Mazara - a rare homer allowed to a left-handed batter, as he has served up more than three in a season only once in his career. Keuchel is 3-2 with a 2.93 ERA in six career starts against Baltimore.

WALK-OFFS

1. Houston pitchers have registered 62 strikeouts through six contests, including 22 in the first two games of the series.

2. The Orioles have lost 13 of their last 15 meetings with the Astros, including eight straight at Minute Maid Park.

3. The Astros' 5-1 start is their best since also winning five of their first six games in 1997.

PREDICTION: Astros 4, Orioles 3

Los Angeles Dodgers vs. Arizona Diamondbacks Preview and Predictions 04-04-2018

4th April 2018 by Gracenote
The Los Angeles Dodgers have won the National League West title each of the last five seasons, but the Arizona Diamondbacks appear intent on ending the streak. After winning the longest game in Chase Field history and beating Clayton Kershaw in back-to-back games, the Diamondbacks on Wednesday aim for a sweep of their three-game series against the visiting Dodgers, who are off to a 2-4 start.

One night after opening the set with a 15-inning, 8-7 victory that lasted 5 hours, 45 minutes, Arizona cruised to a 6-1 victory on Tuesday against Kershaw, who fell to 0-2 for the first time since 2009. The Diamondbacks played without All-Star third baseman Jake Lamb, who landed on the 10-day disabled list with an AC joint sprain in his left shoulder that is expected to keep him out for two-to-three weeks. Deven Marrero started in Lamb's place and batted seventh in front of John Ryan Murphy, who belted a solo homer among his two hits. The Dodgers were held to four hits and need more production from Logan Forsythe, who is starting at third base for Justin Turner (broken wrist) and has recorded only two hits in his first 21 at-bats.

TV: 3:40 p.m. ET, SportsNet LA (Los Angeles), FS Arizona

PITCHING MATCHUP: Dodgers LH Alex Wood (0-0, 0.00 ERA) vs. Diamondbacks LH Patrick Corbin (1-0, 3.18)

Wood was brilliant against San Francisco on Friday, allowing one hit with five strikeouts while throwing 90 pitches over eight scoreless innings. The 27-year-old is looking to repeat his strong start to 2017, when he posted 10 wins and a 1.67 ERA in the first half before battling injuries. A.J. Pollock is 7-for-16 with two homers against Wood, who is 5-3 with a 3.06 ERA in eight career starts versus Arizona.

Corbin made his first career Opening Day start on Thursday, allowing two runs and seven hits with eight strikeouts in an 8-2 victory over Colorado. The 28-year-old native of New York is looking to build on his numbers from last season, when he matched his career highs in wins, starts and strikeouts. Corbin owns a 3-9 record and 4.42 ERA in 16 career games (14 starts) against the Dodgers and has struggled versus Yasiel Puig (7-for-20, homer) and Forsythe (6-for-13).

WALK-OFFS

1. The Diamondbacks have won eight straight regular-season meetings with the Dodgers.

2. Los Angeles purchased the contract of Zach Neal from Triple-A Oklahoma City and placed fellow RHP Josh Fields on the paternity list.

3. Arizona recalled RHP Matt Koch from Triple-A Reno to take Lamb's spot on the roster.

PREDICTION: Diamondbacks 4, Dodgers 3

Cleveland Indians vs. Los Angeles Angels Preview and Predictions 04-04-2018

4th April 2018 by Gracenote
Los Angeles Angels two-way player Shohei Ohtani already is showing why nearly every team in the major leagues was clamoring for his services over the winter. Ohtani is expected to be in the lineup again a day after belting his first career home run as the Angels host the Cleveland Indians on Wednesday afternoon for the rubber match of their three-game series.

Two days after pitching six strong innings for his first major-league win, Ohtani moved to his role as a designated hitter on Tuesday and blasted a three-run shot to help lead the Angels to a 13-2 victory. Mike Trout, Justin Upton, Luis Valbuena and Rene Rivera also homered for Los Angeles, which moved to 4-2 and snapped its 12-game losing streak against the Indians. One bright spot for Cleveland was Jose Ramirez, who ended an 0-for-15 start to the season with a two-run homer in the first inning. The blast turned out to be the only hit on the night for the Indians, who began the year by losing two of three in Seattle before winning Monday's series opener 6-0.

TV: 4:07 p.m. ET, MLB Network, SportsTime Ohio (Cleveland), FS West (Los Angeles)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Indians RH Corey Kluber (0-1, 2.25 ERA) vs. Angels LH Tyler Skaggs (1-0, 0.00)

Kluber was a hard-luck loser on Opening Day, allowing two runs on six hits and one walk over eight innings in a 2-1 setback against Seattle. The 31-year-old surrendered a two-run homer to Nelson Cruz in the first inning before settling in and finishing with eight strikeouts on 91 pitches. Upton is 5-for-16 with three homers against Kluber, who is 2-2 with a 4.31 ERA in five career starts versus the Angels.

Skaggs opened the season on a strong note on Friday, tossing 6 1/3 scoreless innings with no walks and five strikeouts in a 2-1 victory over Oakland. "That's as good as you can pitch," Angels manager Mike Scioscia told reporters. "Tyler was on top of it all night and finished strong. Got to almost 100 pitches and maintained his stuff." Brandon Guyer is 4-for-5 with two homers versus the 26-year-old Californian, who is 0-2 with a 6.23 ERA in three career starts against Cleveland.

WALK-OFFS

1. Ohtani is scheduled to pitch against Oakland on Sunday in his first start at home.

2. Indians LF Michael Brantley (ankle) is expected to be activated from the disabled list prior to Friday's home opener against Kansas City.

3. The Angels placed Matt Shoemaker on the 10-day disabled list with a right forearm strain and recalled fellow RHP Parker Bridwell from Triple-A Salt Lake.

PREDICTION: Indians 5, Angels 2

Minnesota Twins vs. Pittsburgh Pirates Preview and Predictions 04-04-2018

3rd April 2018 by Gracenote
The Pittsburgh Pirates battled weather issues and travel issues en route to a 4-0 start and are trying to keep it going. The Pirates will try to make it five straight wins to begin the campaign when they host the Minnesota Twins in the second of a two-game interleague series on Wednesday.

Pittsburgh swept a doubleheader at Detroit on Sunday and dealt with ice and snow early in the day on Monday before Colin Moran belted his first career grand slam in the first inning and the team went on to grab a 5-4 win. "It's been really fun," Moran told reporters of the team's hot start. "Not too many other words to describe it. This has been a great start. Looking forward to keeping it going. It's been a good start, to start 4-0. Try to build on that." Twins pitching allowed a total of five runs in the first three games of the season at Baltimore and matched that number in the first inning on Monday. "It's tough coming back on a five-run lead but I'm proud of the way guys battled," Minnesota second baseman Brian Dozier told reporters. "That's the thing about this team. We never feel like we're out of it."

TV: 6:05 p.m. ET, FS North (Minnesota), AT&T SportsNet Pittsburgh

PITCHING MATCHUP: Twins RH Jake Odorizzi (0-0, 0.00 ERA) vs. Pirates RH Ivan Nova (0-0, 3.60)

Odorizzi worked six scoreless innings in his Minnesota debut on Opening Day but was held out of the decision. The 28-year-old scattered two hits and two walks while striking out seven against the Baltimore Orioles. Odorizzi is making his first career start against Pittsburgh and is 6-3 with a 3.33 ERA in 17 career interleague starts.

Nova was long gone before the fireworks started at Detroit on Friday and ended up allowing two runs over five innings in a game the Pirates went on to win 13-10. The Dominican Republic native issued just 36 walks in 187 innings in 2017 but struggled with his control against the Tigers while walking three. Nova is 2-0 with a 1.93 ERA in three career games - two starts - against the Twins and is 11-4 with a 2.93 ERA in 23 career interleague games.

WALK-OFFS

1. Twins CF Byron Buxton is 3-for-15 with six strikeouts.

2. Pittsburgh placed RHP Joe Musgrove (shoulder) on the 10-day DL.

3. Minnesota C Mitch Garver, who was struck on the side of the head with a backswing on Sunday, was cleared to play.

PREDICTION: Twins 6, Pirates 3

Chicago White Sox vs. Toronto Blue Jays Preview and Predictions 04-04-2018

4th April 2018 by Gracenote
The slugging Toronto Blue Jays aim for their fifth straight victory - and seventh consecutive game with at least one home run - when they host the Chicago White Sox for the finale of their three-game series on Wednesday. The Blue Jays have gone deep in each of their first six contests, tying the second-longest streak to begin a season in franchise history.

Josh Donaldson and Aledmys Diaz homered on Tuesday as the Blue Jays set a season high for runs in a 14-5 victory. Toronto has scored 17 of its 29 runs via the long ball, with seven different players hitting homers through six games. The White Sox also kept up their homer-happy ways with blasts from Tim Anderson, Avisail Garcia and Yolmer Sanchez. Chicago has slugged 12 home runs in just four contests.

TV: 7:07 p.m. ET, NBCS Chicago, Sportsnet (Toronto)

PITCHING MATCHUP: White Sox RH Carson Fulmer (2017: 3-1, 3.86 ERA) vs. Blue Jays RH Aaron Sanchez (0-1, 6.35)

Fulmer was outstanding in September, going 3-0 with a 1.64 ERA in six games (four starts). The 24-year-old struggled this spring, but the White Sox want to see him in the rotation - where he has fared better during his young career. Fulmer will be facing the Blue Jays for the first time.

Sanchez drew a tough assignment in his season debut, getting the call against the New York Yankees. The 25-year-old held his own but allowed four runs and eight hits over 5 2/3 innings, with four walks hurting his cause. Sanchez has made one start and two relief appearances against the White Sox, allowing two runs over 8 2/3 frames.

WALK-OFFS

1. Donaldson has homered in each of his last five contests against the White Sox, the second five-game homer streak against Chicago of his career.

2. Anderson has hit three home runs in four games after needing 30 contests to reach the mark last season.

3. Diaz left Tuesday's game with back spasms after an awkward swing in the sixth inning and was replaced at shortstop by Gift Ngoepe.

PREDICTION: Blue Jays 8, White Sox 5

Seattle Mariners vs. San Francisco Giants Preview and Predictions 04-04-2018

4th April 2018 by Gracenote
Despite the recent loss of slugger Nelson Cruz, the top of the Seattle Mariners' order continues to click. The Mariners' bats will try to lead the team to a third straight win and a sweep of their two-game interleague series with the host San Francisco Giants on Wednesday.

Cruz was placed on the 10-day disabled list Tuesday, robbing Seattle of its cleanup hitter, but the club produced four first-inning runs en route to a 6-4 win in the series opener. The top four hitters in the lineup went a combined 8-for-18 with three RBIs and six runs scored, and all four are batting .375 or better for the Mariners. The result spoiled the home opener for the Giants, who have lost three in a row after opening the season with back-to-back 1-0 wins at Los Angeles. Wednesday's pitching matchup features a pair of veterans looking to rebound in 2018 as Seattle's Felix Hernandez opposes San Francisco's Johnny Cueto - both of whom got off to excellent starts with scoreless outings last week.

TV: 7:15 p.m. ET, ROOT Sports Northwest (Seattle), NBCS Bay Area (San Francisco)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Mariners RH Felix Hernandez (1-0, 0.00 ERA) vs. Giants RH Johnny Cueto (0-0, 0.00)

Hernandez yielded two hits and two walks with four strikeouts over 5 1/3 innings against Cleveland on Opening Day. The one-time Cy Young Award winner is 23-9 with a 2.92 ERA in 42 career interleague starts and 3-0 with a 1.86 mark in four outings against the Giants. St. Louis Cardinals vs. Milwaukee Brewers Preview and Predictions 04-04-2018

4th April 2018 by Gracenote
The Milwaukee Brewers look to make it a little easier on themselves Wednesday night when they go after a series victory against the visiting St. Louis Cardinals in the rubber match of a three-game set. Christian Yelich and Ryan Braun belted two-out solo homers in the bottom of the ninth inning Tuesday as the Brewers rallied for a 5-4 victory - their fourth in five games to open the season.

Yelich, who also doubled and scored in a two-run eighth inning, is 10-for-23 with five RBIs to start his first season with Milwaukee and Braun is just 3-for-17 in the early going, but leads the team with six RBIs and has two game-winning homers. Jhoulys Chacin makes his first home start for the Brewers on Wednesday and will face fellow right-hander Carlos Martinez in a battle of two pitchers coming off disappointing season debuts. St. Louis signed closer Greg Holland late in the preseason, but he is not ready to go yet and the Cardinals blew their first save opportunity as Mike Matheny went with Dominic Leone on Tuesday. Jose Martinez and Tommy Pham each had three hits to help St. Louis build a 4-0 lead Tuesday after winning the first game of the series and Marcell Ozuna belted his first homer with the team.

TV: 7:40 p.m. ET, Fox Sports 1, FS Wisconsin (Milwaukee)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Cardinals RH Carlos Martinez (0-1, 8.31 ERA) vs. Brewers RH Jhoulys Chacin (0-0, 10.80)

Martinez struggled in his season debut against the New York Mets on Thursday, allowing five runs (four earned) on four hits over 4 1/3 innings with six walks and five strikeouts. The 26-year-old Dominican Republic native produced 42 wins in the previous three seasons and recorded a 3.64 ERA or better in each, but surrendered a career-most 27 homers last year. Yelich is 4-for-8 and Jonathan Villar is 8-for-23 with a homer versus Martinez, who was 1-3 with a 4.30 ERA against the Brewers in 2017.

Chacin had a rough Brewers debut last Friday, yielding four runs on seven hits (two homers) over 3 1/3 innings, but escaped without a decision as Milwaukee earned an 8-6 in San Diego. The 30-year-old Venezuelan went 9-3 with a 1.79 ERA in home games as opposed to 4-7 with a 6.53 mark on the road last year and limited opponents to a .212 batting average after the All-Star Game. Yadier Molina is 5-for-15 against Chacin, who gave up four earned runs over 4 2/3 innings to lose his only start versus St. Louis last year.

WALK-OFFS

1. St. Louis SS Paul DeJong has hit safely in all five games to start the season and is 8-for-18 with three homers and five RBIs overall.

2. Milwaukee 3B Travis Shaw boasts four RBIs in his last three games and hit safely in five straight games to open 2018.

3. Cardinals 2B Kolten Wong is off to a rough start at 0-for-11 with five strikeouts after going hitless in four at-bats Tuesday.

PREDICTION: Cardinals 5, Brewers 3

Texas Rangers vs. Oakland Athletics Preview and Predictions 04-04-2018

4th April 2018 by Gracenote
A day after halting their three-game slide, the Texas Rangers look to post back-to-back wins for the first time this season when they visit the Oakland Athletics on Wednesday for the third contest of their four-game series. Texas' Nos. 5-7 hitters combined for six hits and three RBIs while Joey Gallo homered as the team recorded a 4-1 triumph.

Gallo has gone deep twice in his first six games of the season after belting 41 homers over 145 contests last year in his first full major-league campaign. Rangers slugger Adrian Beltre recorded his 3,053rd career hit on Tuesday, tying him with Rod Carew for both 25th place on the all-time list and first among players from Latin America. Chad Pinder doubled and homered for the Athletics, who have lost four of five since winning on Opening Day. Since going hitless over four at-bats in his season debut, Oakland's Matt Chapman is 8-for-18 during his five-game hitting streak.

TV: 10:05 p.m. ET, MLB Network, FS Southwest Plus (Texas), NBCS California (Oakland)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Rangers RH Doug Fister (1-0, 1.80) vs. Athletics LH Sean Manaea (0-1, 1.17)

Fister got his season off to a good start on Friday, limiting Houston to one run and four hits over five innings en route to victory. The 34-year-old Californian struggled last season in Boston, where he went 5-9 with a 4.88 ERA in 18 games (15 starts). Fister owns an 8-8 record and 3.28 ERA in 18 career turns against the Athletics.

Manaea also had a strong season debut as he held the Los Angeles Angels to one run and four hits over 7 2/3 innings. The 26-year-old native of Indiana struck out seven without walking a batter, with his only hiccup being a first-inning solo homer by Mike Trout. Manaea has made seven career starts against Texas, going 3-2 with a 3.98 ERA while recording 41 strikeouts in 40 2/3 frames.

WALK-OFFS

1. Rangers RHP Tony Barnette (back) will begin a rehab assignment with Double-A Frisco in the coming days.

2. Oakland OF Matt Joyce is expected to be in the lineup Wednesday after receiving a day off to rest his sore left ankle.

3. Texas signed C Cameron Rupp to a minor-league contract and assigned him to Triple-A Round Rock.

PREDICTION: Athletics 5, Rangers 2
