Gracenote
Jun 10, 2018

The big difference between the Boston Red Sox of 2017 and 2018 is power; and showing it off is helping the team keep pace in the American League East. The Red Sox will try to bash their way to a series win when they host the Chicago White Sox in the rubber match of a three-game set on Sunday.

Boston finished 27th in the majors and last in the AL with 168 home runs in 2017 but signed J.D. Martinez to a five-year, $110 million contract in the offseason and is reaping the benefits in the power department. Martinez, who smashed a go-ahead, two-run blast in the fifth inning of Saturday's 4-2 triumph, leads the majors with 21 home runs and 54 RBIs while the Red Sox sit second in the majors in homers. The White Sox are not quite as potent offensively and have scored two or fewer runs in each of the last three games, dropping two of those contests to fall back to 20 games under .500 at 21-41. Chicago will try to get the bats going on Sunday against former Cy Young Award winner Rick Porcello while countering with fellow right-hander Reynaldo Lopez.

TV: 1:05 p.m. ET, MLB Network, NBCS Chicago, NESN (Boston)

PITCHING MATCHUP: White Sox RH Reynaldo Lopez (1-4, 3.42 ERA) vs. Red Sox RH Rick Porcello (8-2, 3.59)

Lopez followed up a terrible start with one of his best while holding Minnesota to one hit in seven scoreless innings in a no-decision on Tuesday. The Dominican Republic native was ripped for seven runs on eight hits and a walk in 2 2/3 frames at Cleveland in his previous turn. Lopez is making his first career appearance against Boston and is 0-3 with a 4.86 ERA in seven road starts this season.

Porcello is coming off back-to-back wins and got the better of defending champion Houston last Sunday by surrendering three runs - two earned - and five hits in 6 1/3 innings. The New Jersey native has also recorded a quality start in three of his last four outings. Porcello earned a win over the White Sox last season despite allowing five runs in 5 1/3 innings and is 11-8 with a 4.35 ERA in 23 career starts against Chicago.

WALK-OFFS

1. Red Sox RF Mookie Betts (abdominal strain) took batting practice for the third straight day on Saturday and is getting closer to a rehab assignment.

2. Chicago 3B Matt Davidson (back) is 2-for-16 in five games since coming off the disabled list.

3. Boston RHP Matt Barnes is enjoying a string of 12 straight scoreless appearances.

PREDICTION: Red Sox 5, White Sox 2

Preview: Orioles at Blue Jays
Gracenote
Jun 9, 2018

The Toronto Blue Jays may not have a realistic shot of making a playoff push with two teams in their division sporting the best records in the majors, but they have flashed the ability to take advantage if their opponents let them hang around too long. After improving what was already one of baseball's marks in their last contest, the Blue Jays eye a season-best fourth straight win Sunday when they look to complete a four-game home sweep of the Baltimore Orioles.

Toronto found itself in its third extra-inning affair in four games Saturday, but the Blue Jays wasted little time beating the Orioles for the fifth time in six meetings this season when Luke Maile drew a four-pitch, bases-loaded walk with two outs in the 10th inning to force home the winning run. A backup catcher who has seen action in only 31 of his team's 64 games, Maile notched his third walk-off RBI of the season to give Toronto a major league-high seventh victory in eight extra-inning contests. Baltimore has been on the wrong end of two of the Blue Jays' five walk-off wins this weekend alone, also dropping a 5-4 decision in Thursday's series opener after surrendering a three-run lead in the ninth. The Orioles have lost 10 of 12 and own both the worst road record in baseball (9-26) as well as the majors' worst overall mark (19-44).

TV: 1:07 p.m. ET, MASN 2 (Baltimore), Sportsnet (Toronto), TVA Sports (Toronto)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Orioles RH Alex Cobb (2-7, 6.19 ERA) vs. Blue Jays RH Marco Estrada (2-6, 5.29)

Cobb turned in the finest of his 10 outings with Baltimore in Tuesday's road win against the New York Mets, allowing one run while striking out a season-high seven in six frames. The 30-year-old Bostonian has given up three earned runs or fewer in six of his last seven outings and posted a 4.65 ERA since recording a 13.11 mark in three April efforts. Curtis Granderson is 3-for-10 with four walks versus Cobb, who is 3-3 with a 3.23 ERA in eight starts against Toronto.

Estrada's five-game losing streak remained intact despite registering the best of his 12 trips to the mound Tuesday, yielding one run on six hits while fanning six over as many innings in a no-decision versus the New York Yankees. Prior to his last outing, the Long Beach State product had surrendered at least four runs in seven of his last nine turns. Adam Jones (9-for-32) and Jonathan Schoop (8-for-34) have each homered twice versus Estrada, who gave up four runs in four frames in a loss at Baltimore on April 11.

WALK-OFFS

1. The Blue Jays, who are 25-1 in games in which they score at least five runs, have scored 11 of their 27 runs against Baltimore this season in the ninth inning or later.

2. Baltimore SS Manny Machado is 1-for-12 in this series after going 11-for-38 and hitting safely in nine of his previous 10 contests.

3. Toronto OF Randal Grichuk is 5-for-11 with two doubles, two homers, four RBIs and three runs scored in this series.

Jun 9, 2018

The Tampa Bay Rays look to build off a slump-busting victory and earn a split of the four-game series when they host the surging Seattle Mariners for the finale on Sunday afternoon. Mallex Smith had three of Tampa Bay’s 10 hits in a 7-3 triumph Saturday that ended an eight-game losing streak during which the Rays dropped four contests by a single run against Seattle and managed to score just 19 times.

Smith is 7-for-11 in the series and Matt Duffy added a pair of doubles in Saturday’s victory to extend his hitting streak to five games (8-for-19) for Tampa Bay, which is 1-5 against the Mariners this season and just 12-15 at home. Nathan Eovaldi, who sat out all of last season after Tommy John surgery, makes his Rays’ home debut when he takes the mound in the finale against All-Star candidate James Paxton. Seattle lost for just the second time in nine contests Saturday after going 0-for-11 with runners in scoring position and leaving 10 on base against three Tampa Bay pitchers. Shortstop Jean Segura had two singles and scored twice in the loss for the Mariners to extend his hitting streak to five games (10-for-21).

TV: 1:10 p.m. ET, ROOT Northwest (Seattle), FS Sun (Tampa Bay)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Mariners LH James Paxton (5-1, 2.95 ERA) vs. Rays RH Nathan Eovaldi (1-1, 3.27)

Paxton has not lost since his season debut, allowing two or fewer runs in 10 of his last 12 starts including a no-hitter at Toronto on May 8. The 29-year-old Canadian held Houston to one run on nine hits and one walk over 7 2/3 innings with six strikeouts last time out to earn his fifth straight win. C.J. Cron is 4-for-14 with a homer versus Paxton, who is 2-0 with a 3.00 ERA in two career starts against Tampa Bay.

Eovaldi gave up four runs on four hits and a walk across five innings to take the loss at Washington last Tuesday in his second start of 2018. The 28-year-old Houston native held Oakland without a hit over six frames in his first major league start since 2016. Segura is 4-for-10 with two doubles against Eovaldi, who has permitted just one earned run over 12 innings in two career starts versus Seattle without a decision.

WALK-OFFS

1. Seattle 2B Dee Gordon did not start and came on as a defensive replacement Saturday after going 1-for-9 the previous two days.

2. Tampa Bay 1B Jake Bauers registered the first two hits of his major league career Saturday after going 0-for-8 in his first two contests.

3. Mariners OF Denard Span, who is 11-for-35 in 10 contests since being acquired from the Rays, boasts a five-game hitting streak.

Jun 10, 2018

The San Diego Padres are fighting to get out of the basement in the National League West and are riding a wave of momentum with wins in eight of the last 11 games. The Padres will try to improve their standing at the expense of another last-place team when they visit the Miami Marlins in the rubber match of a three-game series on Sunday.

San Diego dropped the series opener 4-0 but got the bats going just enough on Saturday to come out with a 5-4 win as Travis Jankowski drove in the go-ahead run in the eighth. The Padres received some surprising pop in the win from shortstop Freddy Galvis, who came into the contest 6-for-34 in his previous 10 games but doubled and homered in the win. The Marlins sit at the bottom of the NL East but won three of four before falling on Saturday and are getting very familiar with the NL West with series against San Francisco (twice), Colorado and Arizona before the end of the month. San Diego will send veteran left-hander Clayton Richard to the mound on Sunday opposite Miami right-hander Jose Urena.

TV: 1:10 p.m. ET, FS San Diego, FS Florida (Miami)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Padres LH Clayton Richard (4-6, 4.67 ERA) vs. Marlins RH Jose Urena (1-7, 4.60)

Richard picked up a win over Atlanta on Monday while allowing three runs on six hits and a pair of walks in seven innings. The Michigan product has worked at least six innings in each of his last six starts and at least seven frames in five of those last six. Richard lasted seven innings at home against Miami on May 30 but was held out of the decision while surrendering two runs and four hits.

Urena picked up his first win of the season at St. Louis on Tuesday despite serving up four runs on 10 hits and a walk in five innings. The Dominican Republic native, who went 14-7 last season, is averaging just 2.85 runs of support per start. Urena went up against Richard at San Diego on May 30 and yielded just one run and three hits over six innings without factoring in the decision.

WALK-OFFS

1. Marlins LF Derek Dietrich recorded multiple hits in five of the last eight games.

2. San Diego LHP Brad Hand tossed a scoreless inning on Saturday to lower his ERA to 1.95.

3. Miami 3B Brian Anderson is 14-for-28 during a seven-game hitting streak.

The St. Louis Cardinals aim for their fourth straight sweep of the Cincinnati Reds when the teams wrap up a three-game series in Ohio on Sunday. Saturday's 6-4 win over the Reds gave the Cardinals 13 consecutive victories against their divisional foes, the second-longest such run in franchise history.

They have also claimed a club-record 11 straight at Great American Ball Park, including all six matchups along the Ohio River in 2018. Jose Martinez went deep Saturday and owns four home runs, seven RBIs and five runs scored during St. Louis' three-game winning streak. Eduardo Suarez slugged a two-run shot for the Reds, who left 10 runners on base while falling to 10-23 at home. Carlos Martinez spun 13 scoreless innings over consecutive starts against Cincinnati in April and will square off against Anthony DeSclafani for the Reds in the finale.

TV: 1:10 p.m. ET, FS Midwest (St. Louis), FS Ohio (Cincinnati)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Cardinals RH Carlos Martinez (3-2, 1.83 ERA) vs. Reds RH Anthony DeSclafani (0-1, 7.20)

After giving up eight total runs through his first seven starts, Martinez has allowed six over his last two - four of which were earned. He lasted a season-low four innings while giving up two runs and walking five in a no-decision against Miami on Tuesday. Joey Votto is 3-for-22 but has 11 walks against Martinez, who is 4-2 with a 2.86 ERA in 11 games (six starts) at Great American Ball Park.

DeSclafani's first appearance in the majors since Sept. 28, 2016 resulted in a loss, as he was charged with four runs in five frames of a 9-6 setback against Colorado on Tuesday. He is 4-1 with a sparkling 2.13 ERA in seven career matchups (six starts) versus St. Louis. Matt Carpenter (6-for-14, two homers) has enjoyed some success against the New Jersey native, while Kolten Wong (0-for-11, six strikeouts) has had his issues.

WALK-OFFS

1. Cardinals C Yadier Molina was 2-for-3 on Saturday and is batting .322 in 101 career games at Cincinnati.

2. Reds RF Scott Schebler is 18-for-39 during a nine-game hitting streak.

3. Carpenter is 3-for-7 with a home run, three walks and three runs scored in the series.

Cleveland scored a total of 10 runs in three consecutive wins, topping out with a 4-1 win in Friday's series opener, but it could not manage even that level of offense on Saturday and put itself in danger of losing the series. The Tigers are coming to the end of a brutal stretch that saw them lose series to the New York Yankees and Boston Red Sox before hosting the American League Central-leading Indians. Detroit gave itself a chance at a series win on Saturday, when Jeimer Candelario belted a two-run, walk-off home run in the 12th. Candelario and the rest of the Tigers' lineup could have a tougher time against reigning AL Cy Young Award winner Corey Kluber on Sunday while they counter with fellow right-hander Artie Lewicki.

TV: 1:10 p.m. ET, SportsTime Ohio (Cleveland), FS Detroit

PITCHING MATCHUP: Indians RH Corey Kluber (9-2, 1.96 ERA) vs. Tigers RH Artie Lewicki (0-1, 3.86)

Kluber could be on his way to a third Cy Young Award and has allowed a total of one run in 19 1/3 innings over his last three starts while striking out 24. The Stetson product hasn't walked a batter in any of his last five starts and handed out just 10 free passes in 91 2/3 innings on the season. Kluber had little trouble against Detroit on April 9, when he scattered two hits and one walk in eight scoreless innings while striking out a season-high 13.

Lewicki made a spot start at Boston on Tuesday and will get a chance to prove he belongs in the rotation. The 26-year-old was reached for four runs - two earned - on five hits and three walks over 3 2/3 innings in a loss against the Red Sox. Lewicki, who is still searching for his first major-league win entering his third career start and 12th appearance overall, scattered three hits across four scoreless innings of relief against Cleveland on May 16.

WALK-OFFS

1. Indians LHP Andrew Miller (knee) is throwing in the bullpen but is not yet ready for a rehab assignment.

2. Detroit DH Victor Martinez went 2-for-3 on Saturday, doubling his hit total from the previous four games.

3. Cleveland 1B Edwin Encarnacion (ankle) sat out Saturday and is day-to-day.

PREDICTION: Indians 7, Tigers 1

Gracenote
Jun 9, 2018

The Milwaukee Brewers staggered into Philadelphia for the final leg of an eight-game road trip having lost three in a row and mired in an offensive drought that produced four runs during the skid. The Brewers have done an abrupt turnaround against the Phillies, piling up 12 runs in each of the first two matchups as they go for a three-game sweep on Sunday afternoon.

Milwaukee has hit three homers in each of the first two games of the series, including a pinch-hit grand slam by Ji-Man Choi that was the decisive blow in Saturday's 12-3 romp. Ryan Braun continues to annihilate Philadelphia pitching at Citizens Bank Park and is 4-for-8 with two homers, a triple, six RBIs and five runs scored in the series. The lone positive for the Phillies was the return to the lineup of Rhys Hoskins, who swatted a three-run blast in his first game since suffering a fractured jaw on May 28. Fading Philadelphia has lost seven of eight in June and has been outscored 35-15 during its four-game slide.

TV: 1:35 p.m. ET, FS Wisconsin (Milwaukee), NBCS Philadelphia

PITCHING MATCHUP: Brewers RH Brandon Woodruff (2-0, 6.05 ERA) vs. Phillies RH Zach Eflin (2-2, 3.74)

Woodruff will be recalled from Triple-A Colorado Springs to make his fourth start and ninth appearance of the season - and first since a two-inning relief stint against Arizona on May 23. He also faced the Diamondbacks in his previous outing, working a season-high five innings and earning the win by allowing two runs on only one hit. He is allowing the opposition to bat .464 with runners in scoring position.

After failing to get through five innings in three consecutive outings, Eflin turned in his best performance of the season at Wrigley Field on Tuesday, limiting the Chicago Cubs to one run on eight hits over 7 2/3 innings. The 24-year-old lost his previous two starts against the Los Angeles Dodgers and Toronto, permitting 11 runs and 16 hits in 8 2/3 innings. Eflin is 2-6 with a 5.43 career ERA at home.

WALK-OFFS

1. Braun is batting .403 (54-for-134) with 13 homers and 40 RBIs in 33 games at Citizens Bank Park.

2. The Phillies placed OF Dylan Cozens (left quadriceps) on the 10-day disabled list.

3. Brewers OF Christian Yelich is 8-for-18 with five runs scored during a four-game hitting streak.

PREDICTION: Phillies 7, Brewers 5

Preview: Angels at Twins
Gracenote
Jun 10, 2018

After scuffling at the plate for the better part of his first two months with the Los Angeles Angels, Ian Kinsler has started to hit more like the four-time All-Star he is. The 35-year-old second baseman can match a career best with a homer in four straight games Sunday when his Angels attempt to tie their longest winning streak of the season and complete a three-game road sweep of the Minnesota Twins.

Kinsler was batting .178 as recently as May 27 and managed only two home runs to go along with six RBIs over his first 39 games after Los Angeles made an offseason trade to acquire him from Detroit. He caught fire at the end of last month against his former team and has been a steadying force atop the lineup ever since, hitting .347 with six homers and 11 RBIs in the last 12 contests. Kinsler and Albert Pujols each went deep in Saturday's 2-1 victory, improving the Angels to 7-1 in June while sending Minnesota to its fourth setback in five outings. Eddie Rosario continued to make a strong case for an All-Star nod with his fourth two-hit effort over that span, but his hot bat alone hasn't been enough to carry the Twins, who have scored a total of eight runs in their last four losses.

TV: 2:10 p.m. ET, FS West (Los Angeles), FS North (Minnesota)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Angels RH Nick Tropeano (3-3, 4.35 ERA) vs. Twins RH Fernando Romero (2-2, 3.96)

Tropeano was fortunate to escape with a no-decision Monday after struggling through his worst outing of the season against Kansas City, surrendering five runs on nine hits and a walk across 4 2/3 innings. It was a step back for the Stony Brook alum, who went 2-1 with a 3.25 ERA in five May turns. Tropeano, who is 3-1 with a 2.55 ERA in four road starts this season, allowed three runs in six frames to Minnesota on May 12 and owns a 2.84 ERA in three career appearances (two starts) against the Twins.

Romero bounced back from his own difficult outing on May 30 versus Kansas City with a solid performance in a no-decision Tuesday against Chicago, yielding two runs over six innings in a no-decision versus the White Sox. The 23-year-old rookie hasn't won since blanking Toronto and St. Louis in succession to begin his big-league career, but he has permitted two runs or fewer in five of his seven turns. Romero threw five innings of one-run ball in another no-decision on May 13 versus the Angels.

WALK-OFFS

1. The only other time in Kinsler's career he hit four homers in as many games was May 15-18, 2016. The last three contests during that streak came against the Twins.

2. Rosario is batting .382 with five home runs, 10 RBIs and has drawn six walks to go along with only two strikeouts in nine games this month.

3. With Saturday's solo shot, Pujols moved into a tie with Hall of Famer Stan Musial for sixth place on the all-time RBI list with 1,951.

PREDICTION: Twins 4, Angels 3

Preview: Pirates at Cubs
Gracenote
Jun 10, 2018

The surging Chicago Cubs will try for their second consecutive weekend sweep when they wrap up a three-game series against the visiting Pittsburgh Pirates on Sunday. The Cubs have claimed a pair of pitchers’ duels to begin the set, winning the first two games by a combined score of 5-1.

Chicago posted a 2-0 victory on Saturday to move a season-high 13 games over .500. The Cubs, who are one-half game behind National League Central-leading Milwaukee, have done it in a variety of ways – their star-laden lineup is heating up, but their pitchers have been dominant so far against Pittsburgh. The Pirates managed a season-low one hit on Saturday as they were shut out for the third time in their last six contests. Pittsburgh has lost three straight and is 5-16 over its last 21, dropping a season-worst two games below .500.

TV: 2:20 p.m. ET, AT&T SportsNet-Pittsburgh, WGN (Chicago)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Pirates RH Ivan Nova (2-5, 4.96 ERA) vs. Cubs RH Kyle Hendricks (4-5, 3.59)

Nova is set to come off the disabled list and make his first start since May 24. The 31-year-old recorded four straight quality starts to end April but posted a 7.61 ERA in five outings in May before landing on the DL with a sprained finger. Nova is 3-1 with a 4.03 ERA in five career turns against the Cubs, including a win on April 10 in Chicago.

Hendricks is coming off perhaps his worst start of the season as he allowed five runs over five innings in a loss to Philadelphia on Tuesday. It marked only the second time in 12 turns this year the 28-year-old has yielded more than three earned runs. Hendricks is 4-4 with a 3.24 ERA in 12 career starts against the Pirates, including a loss on April 12 in which he gave up only two runs over six frames.

1. Cubs 1B Anthony Rizzo has recorded an RBI in each of his last six games with a plate appearance and has collected 36 in his last 35 contests.

2. Pittsburgh C Francisco Cervelli left Saturday’s game as a precaution after being hit by a foul ball on the left side of his jaw.

3. Chicago C Willson Contreras is 9-for-24 during his seven-game hitting streak and has reached base in 12 straight contests.

PREDICTION: Cubs 6, Pirates 4

Jun 10, 2018

The Houston Astros look to continue their dominance in Arlington on Sunday as they attempt to complete a sweep of their four-game series against the host Texas Rangers. Houston pulled out a 4-3 victory on Saturday to improve to 6-1 at Globe Life Park this year - and 9-4 in the season series overall.

The Astros squandered a pair of leads before moving ahead for good when George Springer delivered a run-scoring single in the seventh inning, giving him six RBIs in eight games this month. Jose Altuve kept alive a pair of hitting streaks Saturday, recording a single in the eighth frame to extend his road run to nine contests and overall streak to seven games. Texas registered only five hits in falling to 2-3 on its six-game homestand and 3-6 in its last nine overall contests. Rookie Ronald Guzman recorded two of the hits, including an RBI single, to match the total from his previous seven games with a plate appearance.

TV: 3:05 p.m. ET, AT&T SportsNet-Southwest (Houston), FS Southwest (Texas)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Astros LH Dallas Keuchel (3-8, 4.13 ERA) vs. Rangers LH Matt Moore (1-5, 7.47)

Keuchel's disappointing season continued Tuesday as he was battered for seven runs and seven hits - three homers - over 6 2/3 innings in a loss to Seattle. The 30-year-old native of Oklahoma, who already has suffered three more losses than he did last year, has gone 0-3 with a 6.75 ERA in four turns since scattering three hits over seven scoreless frames in a triumph over Texas on May 13. Keuchel, who lost at Texas in his season debut, is 9-9 with two shutouts and a 3.86 ERA in 24 career starts against the Rangers.

Moore's winless streak reached seven starts - and one relief appearance - on Tuesday as he came away without a decision against Oakland after giving up three runs and eight hits in six innings. The 28-year-old Floridian recorded his lone victory of the year on April 17, when he allowed an unearned run and five hits over a season-high seven frames at Tampa Bay. Moore owns a 3-2 record and 3.46 ERA in five career starts against Houston, with both losses coming this season.

WALK-OFFS

1. Rangers DH Shin-Soo Choo drew three walks Saturday, with the first one extending his on-base streak to 25 games.

2. Altuve has registered seven multi-hit performances during his road hitting streak.

3. Houston 1B Yuli Gurriel ended his first multi-game stretch without a hit since April 25-28 on Saturday by recording his ninth two-hit effort in 20 contests.

PREDICTION: Astros 7, Rangers 3

Preview: Diamondbacks at Rockies
Gracenote
Jun 10, 2018

The Colorado Rockies bolstered their bullpen during the offseason in hopes of addressing a glaring weakness, but the results have been decidedly mixed so far. After yet another bullpen meltdown on Saturday, the Rockies look to snap their three-game losing streak and salvage the finale of their three-game series against the visiting Arizona Diamondbacks on Sunday.

Paul Goldschmidt recorded his second straight two-homer performance and drove in four runs in Saturday’s 12-7 victory as the Diamondbacks won their seventh in a row at Coors Field. Goldschmidt owned a .144 batting average over 27 games last month but has been on a tear since the calendar turned, notching 16 hits - five homers - and 10 RBIs in eight contests in June. Colorado lost its sixth straight home game Saturday despite a stellar effort from Trevor Story, who is 5-for-8 with three blasts and six RBIs in the first two games of the series. The Rockies were hoping for more from reliever Bryan Shaw, who signed a three-year deal with the club in December but allowed six runs - one earned - in Saturday’s loss and has given up at least three in three of his last four appearances.

TV: 3:10 p.m. ET, FS Arizona, AT&T SportsNet-Rocky Mountain (Colorado)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Diamondbacks RH Zack Godley (5-5, 5.12 ERA) vs. Rockies LH Kyle Freeland (6-5, 3.48)

Godley has struggled to build on his success from last season, when he posted a 3.37 ERA over a career-high 155 innings. The 28-year-old native of South Carolina has lost three of his last four starts, including a rough outing versus San Francisco on Tuesday in which he surrendered seven runs over 3 2/3 frames. DJ LeMahieu is 1-for-11 against Godley, who is 3-0 with a 2.66 ERA in five career games (three starts) versus Colorado.

Freeland battled through a blister and allowed three runs over 6 2/3 innings in Tuesday’s 9-6 win over Cincinnati. The 25-year-old native of Denver has gone 3-1 with a 2.19 ERA in four starts at Coors Field this season compared to 3-4 with a 4.15 mark in eight turns on the road. Freeland is 1-1 with a 4.15 ERA in three career starts against Arizona.

WALK-OFFS

1. Rockies RF Carlos Gonzalez was a late scratch from Saturday’s lineup due to back spasms and is listed as day-to-day.

2. Arizona SS Ketel Marte is batting .324 with two homers and eight RBIs over his last 11 games.

3. Colorado placed Harrison Musgrave on the bereavement list and recalled fellow LHP Sam Howard from Triple-A Albuquerque.

PREDICTION: Diamondbacks 7, Rockies 3

Gracenote
Jun 9, 2018

Max Scherzer is bidding to win his third consecutive National League Cy Young Award and is threatening to turn the race into a runaway as he goes for his major league-leading 11th win on Sunday in the finale of a three-game series against the visiting San Francisco Giants. Scherzer has won nine consecutive decisions, including a 10-strikeout effort at San Francisco on April 25.

The Nationals leveled the series with a 7-5 victory Saturday, sparked by the return of leadoff hitter Adam Eaton, who scored twice in his first game since April 8. Bryce Harper became the first player in the NL to reach 19 homers, ending a seven-game drought in which he struck out 14 times and failed to register an extra-base hit. The Giants were unable to overcome an early five-run deficit in Saturday's setback but they have amassed 14 runs and 26 hits in the series. Catcher Nick Hundley had a three-run homer and RBI double as San Francisco lost for only the second time in its last nine games.

TV: 4:05 p.m. ET, NBCS Bay Area (San Francisco), MASN2 (Washington)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Giants LH Derek Holland (3-6, 4.91 ERA) vs. Nationals RH Max Scherzer (10-1, 1.95)

Holland has failed to pitch beyond five innings in seven of his 12 starts and lasted only four innings last time out, settling for a no-decision after giving up two runs and four hits against Arizona. His road ERA (4.50) is a more than a run lower than at AT&T Park (5.55) but he also has served up seven homers in 38 innings away from home. Eaton is 2-for-5 against Holland, who will make his first career start versus Washington.

Scherzer won his third straight start with eight overpowering innings against Tampa Bay on Tuesday, striking out 13 and allowing two runs on five hits. It marked the ninth time he has recorded at least 10 strikeouts, including 12 in eight scoreless innings at Baltimore on May 30. Scherzer has split eight career decisions against the Giants, but he has shackled Andrew McCutchen, who is 4-for-25 with 14 strikeouts.

WALK-OFFS

1. Washington placed RHP Stephen Strasburg on the 10-day disabled list with shoulder inflammation.

2. McCutchen has five two-hit contests during a six-game hitting streak.

3. Nationals RHP Brandon Kintzler will undergo an MRI exam after exiting Saturday's game due to forearm tightness.
