for the most part you are correct cash .a player would have to bet giant money in order to make a living at sports that fact alone eleminates 95%of us so it should be as you say just a hobby . and even if you did have the capitol to wager the amounts nessary to earn a living at this youd be up aganst guys like billy willams the fella that they did on 60 minutes a tough chor indeed . B)

And you don't need a lot of money. What you need is a giant brain and you need to have no attachments. If you look at Billy or some of the other guys, the one thing they have in common is that they are loners. They may have a couple kids and some ex wives but they are alone in the truest sense of the word because to do what they do, they cannot have any distractions. They can't go to soccer games, they can't go to the movies because if they do, that 3 hour window they checked out could fuck up 7 months of work.
I live about 30 minutes outside of Detroit so there are a lot of automotive engineers here, many of which are good friends of mine. I say all the time if these guys had a passion for sports instead of a passion for motors they could all be rich. Because it takes that type of mindset, that singular focus on one thing.
A really simple way to look at it is that professional bettors are the anti-sportsbooks. They are looking to make their living in the shadows grinding out the percentages that nobody else cares about. 5% to them is their mortgage, 7% is the money they need to go another year, 10% is enough to take their laptop to a steakhouse for 45 minutes to celebrate.
Just like the books they are looking to make the money on the little bit in the middle between the wins and losses, these guys are the same on the other side. They don't make money on hitting 7 out of the last 10 or 25 out of the last 40 because that isn't sustainable. They want to be right there where it isn't romantic because that is where the money truly lies in this business.
