I have a strong feeling Stephen Strasburg comes back strong after his embarrassing previous start in which he allowed six runs in 4 2/3 innings during an 8-5 home loss to the Braves. That was the game where Strasburg and Max Scherzer exchanged words in the dugout after Strasburg had been yanked from the game.
Strasburg has pitched much better on the road with a 2.33 ERA. He has owned the Marlins, too, with a 7-0 mark and 1.13 ERA during his last seven starts against them. The Marlins rank 27th in runs and 28th in homers. Miami starter Dan Straily is in good form with a 2.42 ERA in his last four starts spanning 26 innings. Straily hasn't given up a homer in his last three starts. He's throwing in a pitcher's park. Straily won't lack motivation as he's been the source of trade rumors where he could be dealt to a contending team. These teams have a history of going Under when playing at Marlins Park. The Under has cashed 75 percent of the time during their past 26 games in Miami.

1* Free Pick on Dodgers/Braves OVER 8.5

I like the value with the OVER in Thursday's MLB action that has the Dodgers visiting the Braves. This might seem like a high total given what looks like a solid starting pitching matchup with Rich Hill going for LA and Anibal Sanchez starting for Atlanta, but I think both starters will struggle to keep the opposing offense in check.

Both of these teams come into this series swinging a hot bat. The Dodgers are hitting .277 as a team over their last 7 games and the Braves are right behind them at .276. The ball also figures to be carrying well at SunTrust tonight, as temps are expected to be in the mid 80s with the win blowing out to left-center.

OVER 12-3-1 in the Dodgers last 16 games vs the NL East, 4-0 in their last 4 road games vs a team with a winning record and 8-0 in Hill's last 8 starts after recording a Quality Start in his last outing. OVER is also 4-0 in the Braves last 4 and 35-17 in Atlanta's last 52 vs a team outscoring opponents by 0.5 or more runs/game. Take the OVER!

10* FREE MLB PICK (Under 8)

I'll take my chances here with the Brewers and Giants finishing UNDER the total of 8 set by the books. The starting pitching matchup of Wade Miley and Dereck Rodriguez might not scream pitchers-duel, but these two starters have been really good. Miley has a 1.56 ERA in 4 starts and Rodriguez has a 2.89 ERA in 8 starts with a 1.40 ERA in his last 3 outings. UNDER is 13-3 in the Brewers last 16 road games vs a team that's won more than 60% of their home games and 6-1-1 in the Giants last 8 during game 1 of a series. Give me the UNDER 8!

Thursday free play goes on the day card, as I side with Arizona to make it 3 of 4 off the Chicago Cubs at Wrigley Field.

Arizona has claimed the win in 5 of the last 8 season series meetings against Chicago dating back to last season, and they have the right pitcher on the hill this afternoon to push that mark to 6 of 9.

Zack Godley stands at 2-0 with a 2.65 ERA for his last 3 trips to the hill, and for the year he is 11-6.

His counterpart Tyler Chatwood just has not been able to give his team the consistency they need when he takes the mound, as Chatwood is only 4-5 for the year, and his ERA over his last 3 starts is over 6!

Arizona is on a 16-6 road roll, and I will back them in this day game from Wrigley.

2* ARIZONA

My free play is the Washington Nationals and Miami Marlins Under.

MAKE NOTE: All Run Line/Total plays automatically list pitchers with the starters who are scheduled to go at the time of the wager, and I want you to be sure the following pitchers are the starters of record on your ticket when making your play: Stephen Strasburg and Dan Straily. If one or both of these pitchers is not going, this is a no-play.

Let's start with Strasburg, who is 7-0 with a 1.13 ERA in his past seven starts against these Marlins, and making matters worse for Miami's hitters, the strong-armed right-hander hasn’t allowed a run to them since April 3, 2017. He'll be relentless tonight.

Meanwhile, July has been a good month for Straily, who comes off a win at Tampa Bay. In his four starts this month, the right-hander has a 2.42 ERA, with seven earned runs allowed in 26 innings. Two of his last four starts have been seven innings.

Take the low.

1* UNDER Nationals-Marlins (Strasburg-Straily)

Your Thursday freebie is the Under in the Brewers-Giants contest from AT&T Park.

I expect Wade Miley and Dereck Rodriguez to control the action tonight, as Miley sports a 1.56 ERA in his 17-plus innings worked for the season, while Rodriguez' ERA stands at 2.72 for the campaign.

Rodriguez has been smoking of late, as he enters this Thursday start having allowed 2 runs or less in his last 5 appearances - 4 of them starts, and all 4 of the starts having held Under the total.

This is the first meeting of the season between the clubs, and the Under has scored in each of the last 3 showdowns, and is 4-1-1 the last 5 series meetings.

The Giants are on an 18-7-1 Under run their last 26 games played, so look for the offense to have a hard time getting started tonight in this series opener.

Brewers-Giants Under.

3* MILWAUKEE-SAN FRANCISCO UNDER

The Boston Red Sox had their game rained out yesterday, only after they took a 5-0 lead over the Baltimore Orioles. Tonight they'll carry the momentum over from the start of that game, and into the series-opener against the Minnesota Twins.

Since every MLB wager on a run line or total auto-lists pitchers, I want you to be sure the two pitchers on your ticket, when making this play, are Kyle Gibson and Brian Johnson. If they are not the pitchers of record when making your play, disregard this play.

Johnson faces the Twins in his final start before moving back to the bullpen, and he'll be out to make the most of it for the American League East leaders. Last time out, the left-hander took the loss while giving up two runs, albeit both unearned, in five innings against Detroit. He'll be at his best tonight.

Meanwhile, Gibson opened the second half with a rough outing against the lowly Kansas City Royals by allowing four runs on six hits over 5 1/3 innings in a loss. He's posted a 3.91 ERA in four starts in July, and now he faces the toughest lineup in the bigs.

Take Boston, which will roll past Minnesota with ease.

MLB | Phillies vs Reds
Play on: Phillies +121 at 5Dimes

Jack’s Free Pick Thursday: Philadelphia Phillies +121

The Philadelphia Phillies should not be underdogs to the Cincinnati Reds tonight. The only reason they are is because 22-year-old Ranger Suarez will be making his major league debut tonight. But this guy is better than he’s getting credit for.

The Orioles pursued Suarez in a possible trade for Manny Machado. Suarez has gone 3-1 with a 0.91 ERA in eight minor league starters, including 1-0 with a 0.57 ERA in three starts at Triple-A Lehigh Valley. He is one of the better prospects in baseball.

The Reds will go with Tyler Mahle, who is 7-8 with a 4.32 ERA and 1.467 WHIP in 20 starts this season. Mahle has been rocked in his last two starts, giving up 11 earned runs, 3 homers and 19 base runners in 8 innings of work.

The Reds are 19-39 in their last 58 games vs. a left-handed starters. The Phillies are 17-9 against NL Central division opponents this season. Philadelphia is 4-1 in its last five meetings with Cincinnati. Bet the Phillies Thursday.
