Neither bullpen is reliable at this point, so I have no particular interest in playing the nine innings. The Astros have Leblanc’s number this year and recently they pounded him for 7 runs in 4 1/3 innings in Seattle. We will see more of the same tonight in Houston. Talk about having a team’s number, Morton has allowed only 2 runs in 13 innings against the Mariners this year and we believe he will put an end to the Astros losing streak tonight. The line at the time of this writing is Houston minus 200 and since we will NEVER lay such a number we are more than happy to lay the minus 1 1/2 runs at a little plus money. Bauer won after allowing three hits and three walks with 11 strikeouts across six shutout innings versus the Minnesota Twins this past Monday. Bauer has earned wins in three straight with the trio all being quality starts. The current favorite to win the American League Cy Young heads into tonight's contest with an AL best 2.25 ERA. In addition the Tribe right-hander has 206 strikeouts on the season.
Chicago White Sox
Shields earned a no-decision in his last turn and hasn't won across his last four starts. Big Game James has served up six homers and walked 10 in his last 17 innings of work. The White Sox righty no longer sports the command or the trust of his stuff to succeed at this level.
In truth Shields has been fortunate this season and his 4.50 ERA isn't in line with his underlying peripherals. Shields has a 35-plus hard hit percentage along with a mere 14 percent soft contact rate. He pitches to contact at this point of his career and in front of a porous White Sox defense. Shields has posted a .254 BABIP and his fly ball tendencies don't work considering his hard contact ratio.
